So,
I have a story to tell about love.
This took place about 30 years ago.
So what I'm talking about,
It's probably even worse now.
But here is the story.
So I was in my 30s and at the time of my life I was really,
Really depressed and I was spending time with my friend.
Now,
She was a highly educated professional with her husband and they had four kids.
So they were really busy and she also had a depressed friend staying with her.
So it may have put her over the top.
But anyway,
What was happening,
I was sitting on the sofa,
Just not saying much,
And her 10-year-old son came to her and said,
Mom,
I've got a headache.
So she sort of drew back and stiffened and then sent him upstairs to get some aspirin or Tylenol and he told him to bring the pill bottle down and she checked.
And the whole time this was going on,
In her dealings with him,
I noticed this kind of hostility and I was thinking,
Boy,
The kid's got a headache and his mom is,
There's this hostility that's woven into her voice.
So after the boy had,
She'd given the boy the pills and sent him upstairs to sleep,
I told her this.
I said,
Boy,
It wasn't very loving.
It was like you were mad at him for having a headache.
Now,
To her credit,
She immediately went to her son and apologized and made amends.
And you know what happened?
Later that afternoon,
That boy,
As soon as his headache was gone,
He got on his bike and he pedaled a couple of miles to the sort of most expensive jeweler in town in those days and he bought his mother a silver bracelet with a big heart on it saying,
I love you,
Mom.
So what struck me was that was a very marked response to a little bit of tenderness from his mom who was like exhausted,
I think,
Working with kids and then me,
This depressed friend.
Oh,
Good grief.
Anyway,
I think this is going on all around the place and that we're kind of walling off our kids just through stress.
And so I think if we just focus on our hearts a little bit,
Bring our attention to our hearts and just be aware that maybe we're sounding tougher than we mean to and we could choose to open our hearts a little bit more,
Just to our kids,
To everyone,
To ourselves.
Okay.
I said go ahead.
I said I would say go ahead,
