This child-centered relaxation or meditation begins with an accessible breathing technique. It is a short, but effective relaxation that encourages your child to tap into their imagination. They will then journey under the ocean as a mermaid, marveling at the life under the sea. In the end, there are calmly stated directions that encourage the child to gentle awaken or drift off to sleep given the time of day they are practicing.

Hi,

It's Miss Janine here.

Today we're going to listen to a short relaxation that you can do before bed or whenever you need to give your brain and body a little break.

So find a comfortable spot that's quiet and cozy and lay down.

Maybe get a pillow or a blanket.

And once you've found that spot and settled in,

Take a few deep breaths.

Breathing in through your nose and out your mouth.

In through the nose,

Out through the mouth.

And now just focusing on the breath as it is.

Trace the path of your breath as it comes in through your nose and then back out again.

Notice how your chest rises and falls.

We're going to use the power of our imagination to make a movie in our mind.

So just like you watch a movie on TV,

Try to make that movie happen in your brain.

When you have your eyes closed,

It's a little bit easier to do so because you don't have the distractions of the room that you're in.

So close your eyes and listen to my words.

Let's imagine that you're on a boat.

A boat resting on the ocean.

It rocks gently over the water,

This way and that.

You can feel the warm sun and the cool breeze on your skin.

You can smell the salty air.

As you relax on your boat,

You hear the seagulls calling to each other and the gentle splash of the salty water against the sides of the boat.

You feel so relaxed and peaceful out here on the ocean water.

In the distance,

You see a few large rocks peeking out from the water.

As you get closer,

You think you see a person on the rocks.

You think that they might need some help.

Finally,

You're close enough to see that it's not a person on the rocks.

It's not a person because they don't have legs,

But a tail,

A beautiful sparkling tail.

It's a mermaid,

A real live mermaid on the rocks.

You are surprised and excited.

Then,

Even more surprised when the mermaid speaks.

They ask you if you would like to swim with them.

You chuckle and say that you do not have a tail,

But they respond with a sprinkle of magic dust.

It sparkles and shines as it floats through the air toward you.

You blink and when your eyes open again,

Your feet feel tingling.

Your legs do too.

You look down.

To your surprise,

You no longer have legs,

But one sparkling tail.

The mermaid smiles and you suddenly know just what to do.

You jump into the sea with a splash and the mermaid follows.

Under the ocean,

You are amazed.

You find that you do not need to come up for air.

You're a mermaid.

The water is cool,

But not too cold.

You see sea plants of green and corals of pink and orange.

Blue mussel shells and purple seahorses clinging to seaweed as it waves in the drifting water.

Schools of fish flutter around you.

They are all different colors.

And jellyfish dance.

You cannot believe your eyes.

Everything is so beautiful and living in harmony.

You feel so free,

Free to swim anywhere you would like,

To explore,

To play.

You feel happy and safe.

You feel so grateful.

A sea turtle comes close by and you follow them through the coral reef.

They swim past sea stars and urchins,

Crabs and lobsters.

And then you spot it.

A sunken ship submerged in the water,

Abandoned or so it seems.

The sea turtle guides you to an opening where you can swim inside.

And the two of you swim from room to room on the boat,

Exploring.

Then you find your mermaid friends and others.

They're inside the sunken ship.

They're sipping on tea from teacups made of shells.

They're so happy that you are here.

They thought they had lost you.

They offer you a cup and you sip your tea.

You relax and smile.

You enjoy your adventure.

And you take a deep breath in and a full breath out.

Another deep breath in and out.

You begin to stretch your arms and legs.

Wait,

Legs?

Was it all a dream?

You were back on your boat.

You must have fallen asleep.

You look down and sure enough,

Your tail is gone.

But wait,

There on the floor of the boat is a teacup made of shell.

And that makes you smile.

You begin to deepen your breath,

Breathing in and breathing out.

Breathing in and out.

You start to wiggle your fingers and toes.

Maybe stretching a little bit.

And if it's your bedtime,

You can drift right off to sleep.

If it's still day,

Take time to slowly wake up and enjoy the peacefulness that you have created.

And if you're still awake,

You can take a deep breath in and out.

And you begin to feel a little bit of relief.

You begin to feel a little bit of relief.

You begin to feel a little bit of relief.

You begin to feel a little bit of relief.

You begin to feel a little bit of relief.

You
