We will go not just blue today.

We're going to go blue and indigo since I'm making my way through the rainbow or if you want the chakras blue hits on both the throat chakra and the third eye chakra with blue and indigo so we're going to go hit hit on both.

I tried to dig out enough information on indigo in and of itself to do two separate and it just didn't make sense so it's kind of all bundled into one.

Welcome if you haven't been here before I'm Patricia Baldwin-Segabrook and I work abstractly painting in a medium called encaustic as well as oils and I've been doing this for the better part of three decades teaching all around the world,

Have books published in the medium and I come to insight timer as before the brush to bring my desire to deepen the practice and the understanding of creativity as personal expression so that we are all myself first always that's how it works isn't it?

Myself first and then everyone else who engages we are all bringing our best selves to the world that we live in.

I don't think it's too important right now it's like the primary thing all of us should be working on bringing our best selves bring our truest selves and living our most passionate persuasions so this is why we are here why I am here hearts are awesome follows are lovely donations are wonderfully helpful so thank you for everything that said let's get started.

Blue as I said blue and indigo are included today in this rainbow exploration of color theory.

No profound quote as we had for green but just a little snip of a thought blue the color of the sky and the sea blue the color of the sky and the sea that right there just saying that statement draws you to what blue is all about some of it anyway that tranquility that calmness now of course we can go swing both ways with that because the oceans the seas and the sky can be very tumultuous but that's when they turn other colors that's when they go towards that deep indigo that's almost black and the grays so stick in the blue here and go with tranquility and calmness associated words are also stability trust loyalty wisdom confidence think of those blue power suits pinstripe suits blue pinstripe shirt intelligence that's where I kind of we you know third eyes up there cleanliness kind of hit on that when we were doing green the packaging for cleaning products is often blue or that lighter blue or green health faith truth and as I said tranquility and calmness blue is described as a favorite color by many people and it's the color most preferred by men in my own little research study on that I have to totally agree with a husband and four sons they're all all over blue like okay it is often viewed as non-threatening and can seem like conservative and traditional so all of these things I don't think are going to be a surprise to you at this point blue also though can create feelings of sadness and aloofness we in America think of being blue as a as a kind of depressive term consider how a painting that heavily features blues such as Picasso during his blue period look them up they're like they almost make you hurt they make you feel so lonely and so sad and forlorn that's that deep sadness and aloofness of blue and then consider how blue is used in language so we've got the blue moon blue Monday a blue blood the blues music as well as having the blues and then the beautiful blue ribbon light green let's look at the shades shades of blue to tell us more dark blue and this is where indigo hits the chakra place of the third eye trust dignity intelligence and authority bright blue mid-tone bright blue it's uh this is kind of more where the throat chakra hits cleanliness strength dependability coolness and then light blue think of well the autumn sky right now peace serenity ethereal spiritual and the information I found also said infinity but that one makes me go right well huh infinity has a color association I suppose if you look at the infinite horizon it's out to that pale blue most blues convey a sense of trust loyalty and understanding on as I mentioned on the other hand in American culture blue evokes that symbol of depression singing the blues feeling blue this is like just another great example of that complexity of color symbolism and you know it these these symbols can be universal on so many levels symbolism of the colors as well as like numbers and seasonal uh the evoc of symbolism symbolism they can be universal but they're very much nuanced to the individual culture and individual experiences of the person experiencing them so I like that uh you know to bring that all in and and this is where the uniqueness of use in our art really starts to play again it's that story we're telling and why we're choosing those colors so this is where I got a little bit of more interesting rather than okay I get it I know that blue has the least amount of substance of any color meaning we've hit on it a couple times that a generous energetic vibration of this color that makes us actually see it and it has the least amount of material if you will in that energy stream so it is absorbed by things it touched and thereby disappears whereas like the red has the most density most matter in its color energetic wave so it bounces back and we see it much more than we see a blue so it has the least substance least amount of substance of any color and therefore in nature like we really do not see too much blue in nature except in that gorgeous sky and that depth of the waters and therefore we start to associate it with you know spiritually we associate it with spiritual powers with spirit with inner peace and calmness I also thought this was interesting and begs for more exploration investigation light blue supposedly the color of meditation I suppose if it's calming of course that makes a great deal of sense and then dark blue of dreams so curious that too makes sense if that dark blue is associated with that third eye that's our intuition kind of space and that's where the unconscious mind goes on our dreams blue as a personality type is the color of trust and responsibility honesty and loyalty this personality type is sincere reserved and quiet and doesn't like to make a fuss or draw attention it hates confrontation and likes to do things in its own way I think that's going to be true of any color personally but but okay from a color psychology perspective blue is going to be reliable and responsible it tends to exhibit an inner security and confidence it seeks peace and in trend and tranquility above everything else which again promotes that physical and mental relaxation that we kind of associate with the sense of blue color blue is idealistic it enhances self-expression and our ability to communicate our needs and wants to think about that one I wear all blue am I going to be communicating my needs and wants better it inspires high higher ideals again that higher mind thinking where we find the third eye with that indigo blue's wisdom comes from this higher level of intelligence in that spiritual perspective the ergo the sky is blue and our third eye is blue blue is the color of spirit of devotion in nearly all religions at some level you can find this association it therefore enhances contemplation contemplation and contemplation of the mind prayer for me believe it or not blue is not a favorite color we've already touched on where my favorite colors lie but interestingly enough it's the color I use most often in my paintings so it won't show up as like a dominant although you can see behind me very dominant this deep mid-tone blue in these expressions right now granted they're not done so there's a it's highly likely that this color will get pushed back but still always evident there I've tried to surround myself with a bunch of my paintings so you can see how you know even the ones in the back there's blue showing up in some degree in all of these iterations now I'm busy painting these dots and there's tones and shades of blue going on and when we talked about green last time I was intrigued by the idea of pew screen so that's what I tried to create here as this next level layer that's another story so blue find I tucked two other paintings away because I'm working on them to deliver to a show tomorrow but they had some great examples of blue as well you'll have to take my word for it blue the color that shows up the most but ironically not my favorite color and I've realized through this exploration and this you know looking at my paintings seeing how I'm going to talk about this and what I'm gonna what I'm gonna bring to all of you greatly intrigued to see that this was the case and try to make an understanding of it and I think it's because it speaks to blue speaks to my idealism I'm an idealist and I used to be accused of that now I hold it proud absolutely I expect or lean towards this idealized version of existence of life of of possibility you know it's the shoot for the stars you'll land in the clouds or vice versa yeah that you know I speak I constantly seek spiritual cognition my own understanding and touch points of truth I'm always seeking out that harmony of peace to action being to doing you know all of these things beget some of those blue connotations and that's why I think it's it's intermingled in hidden and layered into my paintings because it's something that resonates through it all but not I'm not throwing in anybody's face that's just not the way I work it's not the way blue works so that to me is like oh okay maybe I get that and blue to me is kind of like a balancing color a harmonizing color my numerology I think it's personality or character character number is eight that that infinity sign it doesn't show up I've got a tattoo and like skin tone here it's it's eight and eight to me is that infinity it's that continuous that harmony that balance that yin and yang that be and do and that again is that blue coming into play spiritual versus practical the whole thing so let's take it all to canvas here we are like last week I'm continuing this playing on this this paper pouring my colors from top to bottom and I'll show the whole thing once I'm once I pour here but you you know what are you doing what are you exploring what's going to be your choice for blue I'm doing the mid tone again ultra ultra marine blue with a little bit of white added and I've thinned it down so I can put a little bit of blue on top of it and then I'm going to do a little bit of blue on top of it and then I've thinned it down so I can pour that's the play in me pour paint are you going to choose a blue that speaks to that trust and that dignity and that intelligence are you going to speak to the sky lighter blues of calm and peace and spirituality you go play with it we've got a five minute exploration all right let's go for some blue I'm going to be doing some pouring five minutes everybody so you so you so so so so so so so all right five minutes is a quick shot for sure hopefully you had some fun with blue maybe thought of it just a tiny bit differently than you do already but thank you for this exploration and being a part of it and hopefully y'all can just continue straight on from here hang out in the studio and keep creating thank you very much enjoy your company see you soon
