Welcome to this night vigil.
This journey into rest,
Into trust,
Into the deep mystery of sleep.
For the next eight hours you are held safe and beloved.
There's nothing you need to do,
Nowhere you need to go,
Nothing you need to prove.
Tonight you're simply yours.
You are simply God's.
Let us begin by finding your breath.
Notice the air moving in and moving out as you breathe.
Cool as it enters,
Warm as it leaves.
Breathing in,
You are filled.
Breathing out,
You release.
Now bring your awareness to your body,
Beginning at the crown of your head.
Notice any sensations there and let them soften.
Let your crown of your head soften.
Your forehead,
The space between your eyebrows,
Releasing.
Your eyes,
Your cheeks,
Your jaw,
All softening.
Let your awareness travel down to your neck and shoulders.
So much carried here during the day,
Now laying it all down,
Softening,
Releasing,
Letting go.
Your chest rising and falling with each breath,
Your belly soft and at ease.
Your hips,
Your legs,
Your feet,
The whole of you resting on this bed,
Held by the ground beneath you.
And now,
Imagine yourself in the palm of God's hand,
Not gripping,
Just held,
Like a child carried home after a long day.
The psalmist writes,
I think about you before I go to sleep,
And my thoughts turn to you during the night.
So tonight,
We do just that.
We point ourselves towards love,
Like a compass needle,
And we let go.
There is no need to empty your mind.
No need to be anywhere other than here.
Simply let yourself be held.
Let the spirit do the work.
And now,
Together we pray an ancient prayer over your body as you prepare for sleep.
A prayer of presence,
Of protection,
Of love surrounding you within and without.
Letting these words wash over you and sink into your bones.
Christ with me.
Right here in this moment,
In this breath,
Christ is with you.
Not far away,
Here,
Closer than your own heartbeat.
Christ before me,
Going ahead of you into the night,
Into tomorrow,
Preparing the way.
You do not step into darkness alone.
Christ behind me,
Holding all that you've left behind today.
The words spoken,
The work done,
The things undone,
All of it held in mercy.
Christ in me,
At the very center of your being,
In your chest,
In your heart,
The spirit dwells.
Breathe into that sacred space now and know you are temple.
Christ beneath me.
Feel the bed beneath your body,
The earth beneath the building,
The love beneath all things.
You are held from below with an unshakable foundation.
Christ above me,
Like a canopy of stars,
Like the shelter of wings,
Love covering you,
Protected,
Watched over through the night.
Christ on my right,
Bring your awareness to your right side,
Your right hand,
Your right shoulder.
Christ there,
Your companion,
Your guide.
Christ on my left,
And now bringing awareness to your left side,
Your left hand,
Your left shoulder,
Surrounded on every side by presence.
Christ when I lie down,
As you are now,
Resting,
Surrendering,
Letting your body soften into sleep.
This is prayer.
This is trust.
You are not alone.
Christ in the heart of every person who thinks of you tonight,
Those who love you,
Those who pray for you.
Even now,
You are held in their care.
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks your name,
Blessing you,
Naming you,
Beloved.
Christ in every eye that sees you.
You are seen fully,
Truly,
And loved without measure.
Christ in every ear that hears you.
Your voice,
Your prayers,
Your deepest longings,
All heard.
So rest now,
Beloved,
Surrounded.
Christ with you,
Within you,
All around you in every direction.
You are safe.
You are loved.
You are not alone.
The same one who numbers the stars,
Knows your name.
And tonight,
As you sleep,
You are watched over.
So let the night hold you.
Let the silence carry you.
And when morning comes,
You will wake,
Renewed.
Rest,
Beloved.
Rest.
Good morning,
Beloved.
You have journeyed through the night,
And now the morning has come.
We give thanks for the gift of rest.
For the mercy of a new day.
May you rise with gratitude in your heart.
May you walk with love as your guide.
And may you know,
Deeply,
That you are held still.
In the name of the one who creates,
Redeems,
And sustains,
Go gently into this day.
Amen.
