Welcome to a magical story that will take you to caves and battling trolls,
Through mountains and into rivers.
Tonight we go on an adventure.
So let's lay down,
Relax our bodies,
Close our eyes.
And if you can,
Just for a moment,
Picture yourself smiling.
Feel what it feels like to raise the edges of your mouth and the corners of your mouth into a smile and know that as you drift away into the night,
Into your dreams and sleep,
That good things await you.
And know that tonight you will have wonderful dreams.
So let's feel our bodies getting comfortable in our beds.
Feel your arms and notice how they're starting to feel heavy.
Your hands are feeling heavy.
Notice how your shoulders are relaxing.
The muscles in your face relax and get heavy and smooth.
The muscles around your eyes let go.
Notice how your legs feel heavy.
Your feet relax.
You feel as if your body is beginning to sink into your bed.
It feels so good to be laying down right now.
And inside,
You even notice that you're beginning to feel happy.
See that the day is coming to a close and that tonight we get to go on a magical journey with Max and Bee.
It was a warm summer afternoon.
The sun was out.
And it seemed like that big yellow disk,
The sun,
Was closer than it had ever been before.
It wasn't too hot and it wasn't too cold.
It was just perfect.
The kind of weather that you can run around with a wet bathing suit and still feel just right.
The shadows from the trees were dancing on the grass.
It was a perfect day.
There was a little bit of a breeze blowing.
Max and Annie's mom and dad were in the garden,
Working away,
Pulling weeds out of the black dirt,
Throwing them into their yellow wheelbarrow.
Max and Bee were getting ready to play on the rope swing underneath their tall oak tree.
When they noticed far away in the mountains,
A big dark storm cloud was starting to build.
And they could tell from where they were at that it was raining over there,
Underneath that big dark cloud.
And even though they were swinging back and forth and they could feel the wind blowing through their hair every time they swang,
And they could feel the feeling of their belly moving every time they went higher and higher,
They started seeing that that dark cloud over there far away against the mountains was beginning to make thunder and lightning.
And the wind started to blow.
The tree was moving back and forth,
Swaying with the wind.
Max and Bee decided that they should probably take care of the horse and the bull over next to the barn.
So they started walking over to take care of their horse and bull,
Who both loved Max and Bee.
They were their favorite people in the world.
And when the horse and bull saw Max and Bee get closer and closer,
They got excited.
They were excited because they knew that the storm far over there was full of energy and power.
And they were also excited because Max and Bee were coming to see them.
And every time Max and Bee came to see their horse and bull,
They knew that they got loves and attention.
So Max and Bee got their treats out of the barn and pulled them out of their pockets and started feeding their pets the horse and bull.
And they were going to take them into their special areas inside of their big red barn.
When Max and Bee looked over and they saw that a giant bird was flying straight towards them.
That giant bird was an owl.
An owl with dark brown and black feathers and big golden eyes.
When they looked into the eyes of this owl,
They knew that this owl was very wise and very friendly.
The owl landed.
Are you Max and Bee?
The owl said.
Well,
Yeah,
Max replied.
I have a quest for you,
The owl said.
There is something coming,
Something in the mountains and I need you.
You are the only ones that can save us.
Max and Bee looked at each other.
What do you mean we're the only ones that can save you?
What are you talking about?
We don't have time to explain it now.
Climb on my back and I'll take you where you need to go.
Time has stopped when the storm arrived.
We have no other choice than to go now.
Max Bee,
Will you save us?
Well,
Max and Bee looked at each other.
They had never been asked to save anybody before.
They had never even thought of themselves as somebody who could help or save anybody.
But today they were being asked to do something,
To do something bigger than they had ever imagined that they would ever have to do.
What could they say?
Could they say no?
Could they back away from such an adventure?
No,
They decided that they were going to go.
Climb on my back,
Said the owl,
And I'll take you.
Max and Bee climbed up onto the back of the owl.
Max reached in and wrapped his hands around the feathers of the owl.
They felt strong.
They felt safe on his back.
He was so big and sure it almost seemed like there was a seat for them to sit.
The owl started flapping his wings and kind of ran a little bit and poof.
Before they knew it,
They were flying through the air.
The wind was blowing through their hair and past their face.
They could smell the fresh rain far in the distance and the air felt heavy and wet.
It was the perfect feeling.
The owl flew over lakes and forests and they felt like they had been on his back for an hour.
When finally,
The owl started dropping lower and lower.
Beneath the clouds,
They saw a giant rock ledge coming out of the side of a mountain with a huge black opening that went in.
The owl flew closer and closer and very gracefully landed on this big rock ledge.
Max and Bee let themselves off of the owl's back and the owl turned to him and said,
There,
In the corner next to the opening,
You'll find yourselves your weapons of choice,
The things that you'll need to defeat this enemy within.
Max grabbed the sword and carried it with you always.
Bee,
The magic wand is yours.
Only you can use the magic that lives within the wand.
Max and Bee went and picked up their tools and the owl said,
I'll see you when the job is through.
Just remember,
Trust yourselves.
Only you know what's right.
Only you have the answer.
With that,
The owl jumped off the ledge and flew away.
The wind was starting to blow when the dark storm was moving closer.
Max and Bee knew that they didn't have time to waste.
They had to go inside.
Max and Bee entered into the cave.
There was just enough light from outside where they knew that they were going to be able to see where they were going.
So they started walking in deeper and deeper and it started getting darker and darker.
And just when they didn't think that they were going to be able to see anymore,
They saw something glowing in the distance.
There were things that were glowing bright green and blue,
Purple,
And orange.
When they got closer,
They saw that these were giant bugs.
Not just any bugs,
But giant slugs with shells.
They're huge antennas,
But they glowed so bright that they could see all around them.
They could see every part of the cave because the slugs were crawling everywhere,
Shining their beautiful lights.
So Max and Bee kept walking through the cavern.
Getting deeper and deeper,
Pretty soon they started to feel a cool air blowing past their faces so they knew that they were getting close to an opening,
A way out.
Up ahead they saw light.
They got so excited that they were almost out of the cave.
They started running when all of a sudden the floor gave way and they fell,
Crumbling down through the floor,
Falling deeper and deeper.
They landed in a warm river with a splash.
The water was moving fast and as they fell,
They realized that they had dropped their sword and magic wand into the river.
They had to find a way to get those back,
But the water was moving so fast they didn't know what to do.
So Max and Bee just grabbed each other and flowed down through the river.
They came out into an opening where the sunshine was coming down onto the land all around them and it was a giant valley of green tall grass waving and butterflies the size of airplanes.
There were trees that were massive.
They were as big around as school buses and as tall as skyscrapers.
They saw strawberries the size of cars and blueberries the size of beach balls.
This place was special.
They pulled themselves onto the shore and laid there,
Their bodies weak from the adventure of flowing through the river.
When they felt like they were strong enough,
They got up.
Max grabbed a stick,
Used it as a walking stick,
And Bee walked beside him and they started walking down the river.
They knew that they had to find a way out of this place,
But they had never seen anywhere like this before.
Everything there seemed to be interested in them,
Not mean,
And they weren't scared.
It was almost like everything there saw them as a friend.
This was a very special place indeed.
Max and Bee loved it in fact.
They could walk up to a strawberry and grab a handful or a blueberry and take a bite.
They were almost too heavy where they couldn't even carry them.
Max and Bee laid down underneath one of the trees and watched the things going on all around them.
They saw bears and tigers,
And in the river they saw dolphins,
And far away on the other side of the river,
Bee noticed a unicorn.
It was all white,
With rainbow colors on its wings and horn.
It was very magical.
In this unicorn saw Bee.
It started walking and trotting over towards them,
And Bee got excited.
Max stood up.
He didn't know what to think.
This unicorn was huge.
Would it be friendly or would it be mean?
They didn't know when all of a sudden there was a loud crash,
Far away in the distance.
This crash made everything stop.
The animals stopped.
The dolphins stopped jumping and playing.
The bears stopped moving.
The unicorn stopped moving.
And they all looked towards the end of this giant magical valley where two big mountains came together in a big V-shaped ravine.
Max and Bee knew instantly that this was the reason they were there.
This was the reason that the owl had sent them.
And they knew that they must leave.
Bee looked at the unicorn and said,
Can you help us?
Can you take us to this edge,
To the end of this place?
The unicorn whinnied and lowered himself down so that Max and Bee could climb on.
Bee grabbed a hold of the mane of this unicorn.
And the unicorn galloped and jumped and started flapping its wings and carried them over this magical place.
When they realized that they weren't going to make it before the sun went down and it just happened that there was a small cabin next to the river,
The unicorn flew down and landed in front of this magical cabin.
Max and Bee went to the front door,
Knocked,
Nobody answered.
But there was a note on the door that said,
Whoever stays here,
Please clean up after yourself.
But my home is your home.
So they opened the door.
With a soft knock,
They said hello.
And nobody was there.
Inside there were two beds,
Both of them with the covers pulled back and comfortable pillows.
Max and Bee both went in and sat down on the beds.
Oh,
They felt so nice and so comfortable.
And as they both laid down,
Tucked their legs underneath the covers,
Pulled the covers up to their chins and snuggled in and they looked out the windows,
They could see the stars twinkling far away,
The unicorn standing guard outside of the cabin.
They knew that they were going to be able to drift away into a deep,
Deep sleep.
And they could just close their eyes and let go.
The stars were twinkling outside and they knew that they were safe here.
The next morning when they awoke,
The unicorn was outside.
They went out to find something to eat.
There was a peach tree next to the cabin,
The size of four trees at home.
It was like as big as their barn and the peaches were as big around as a huge hay bale.
Luckily there were a few laying on the ground and they went up and they could just dig their hands into these big peaches.
They smelled so sweet.
When they were eating,
The juice was running down their chins and they were laughing.
And then they heard the crash again,
Far away in the distance.
The unicorn had a worried look in its eye and Max and Bee knew that they must face this thing that was ahead of them.
So they climbed on the back of the unicorn and flew to the edge of this valley,
Through the ravine,
And the unicorn landed at the bottom of a mountain.
He was too scared to go any further.
Bee looked the unicorn in the eye and said thank you for taking us on this journey and being with us this far.
You are a brave and noble unicorn.
We will not forget you.
The unicorn pressed its nose up against Bee's cheek and nuzzled.
They said goodbye and the unicorn flew off.
Max and Bee saw a trail leading up this rocky mountain and so they began climbing.
Step after step they went up and up,
Step after step,
Farther up and up until they came to the top.
The crashing sound became more intense and came more often.
They went to the edge of the mountain and they looked over and they saw a massive creature.
He was the size of a mountain.
He had messy,
Messy brown hair that was long and down to his shoulders.
He had one eye in the middle of his forehead and a huge round nose with what looked like a giant wart on it.
He had two teeth sticking out of his lips and he was smashing a giant stick or club up against the side of the mountain.
He was angry and mad and he was making sounds and talking to himself.
Bee stood up and yelled to the troll,
Hey!
The troll turned and stared with that one eye.
He looked so angry he grabbed his big club and started swinging it towards the mountain where Max and Bee were standing.
They jumped back and the giant club broke through the top of the mountain.
Rocks and stones flew everywhere.
Max and Bee fell backwards and they knew that they couldn't go forwards again.
Everything had been destroyed and it was too steep to go any farther so they had to turn around and go back.
They ran as fast as they could,
Scared of what the troll would do if he saw them again.
When they got to the bottom they found a tunnel,
A small tunnel,
And it was the only way back.
They couldn't climb back up because the unicorn had dropped them off at this place.
They didn't know how to make it back to the valley.
So without knowing if they were going to make it or not,
Max and Bee decided to go into the tunnel.
It was like a slide and when they put their butts down they just started sliding down through and they felt them swishing back and forth and they dropped out into a giant pool.
Outside of this pool there were fish swimming,
There were all kinds of magical colors just like the slugs up above.
There were purple fish and green fish and orange fish and blue fish swimming all around them.
The cave around the pool was dark but the entire pool glowed because of the fish.
Everything had a brilliant color.
And Max and Bee saw something in the center of the pool far ahead,
Shimmering,
Reflecting the light of the fish.
They moved closer and Max saw his sword.
Bee found her magical wand laying over in the corner.
They had found their tools and they knew that they had made the right decision coming back and going down through this tunnel.
They had found what they needed.
They suddenly felt brave,
Like they could take on anything.
And so they kept going towards the end of the pool where they saw the light.
They knew that that was the way out of the tunnel.
When they came out of the tunnel the giant troll king was there,
Far in front of them,
Smashing up against the mountain,
Knocking over trees and scaring all the birds.
Max and Bee started running towards the troll.
They knew that they had to stop him.
They didn't know how.
But they moved closer and closer,
Hiding behind rocks as they moved to make sure that the troll didn't see them.
And when they got close enough,
Bee decided that she was going to try and use her wand.
So she pulled out her wand and she aimed it directly at the troll and she said,
Be nice!
The wand sputtered and spit and sparked and shot a brilliant white light directly at the troll.
And when it hit him,
He stopped smashing the rocks and he sat down.
The troll looked over at Max and Bee and saw what they had done,
But he seemed almost as if he was half-sleepy.
The troll started crying.
One big tear fell from his eye,
Hitting his nose,
Running to the edge of it and then falling to the ground.
And it was so big that when it hit the ground,
It splashed and got all over Max and Bee.
The troll looked at them and said,
Are you here to eat me?
Max and Bee looked at each other and started laughing.
How would we eat you?
They asked.
You?
You are here to take me away?
Why are you coming after me?
Max and Bee looked at the giant troll and said,
Why are you breaking things and scaring all the animals?
We are here to try to get you to stop.
We are not here to hurt you.
The troll looked back at them and said,
But I lost my family.
I was walking through the woods looking for dinner when all of a sudden there was a loud crack and I didn't know where I was.
The trees were different,
The mountains were different,
And here I am.
I don't know how to go back home.
I don't know where my family is.
I'm scared.
And now you two come and you hit me with some kind of light and I cry.
I don't cry.
I'm not a crier.
Are you going to eat me?
Max and Bee started laughing.
No.
We're not going to eat you.
Then what do you want?
We just want you to stop.
Maybe we can help you go home.
Would that make you happy?
Well,
Yes.
I just want to be with my family.
But how can you two small creatures help me go home?
Well,
Max and Bee thought they had a magic wand and a sword.
And Max had always thought that the sword was for slaying monsters and swinging and cutting.
But maybe it was for something else.
So we grabbed the sword and he held it out in front of him and he started turning.
And all of a sudden the sword started to buzz like a vibrate.
And it felt like it was pointing in a direction.
I think we need to go this way,
Said Max.
So Max and Bee started going towards the vibrating sound from the sword.
The giant got up from the place where he had sat down and started walking behind them.
Every step that he took made the ground shake.
Max and Bee were running now and as they moved closer and closer the sword was making a louder and louder sound.
It was beginning to glow a brilliant,
Brilliant bright blue.
And it was shining a light from the tip when all of a sudden it looked as if it was shooting a giant beam of light out the end of the sword.
Max waved it up and down and it looked like it was slicing a hole into the space and sky in front of them.
It was like a doorway opened in the air.
And on the other side of that doorway they saw giant purple mushrooms and huge orange rocks.
The grass was blue and there were butterflies,
Except the butterflies had fur,
Like brown fur on a bear.
It was a strange world.
But the giant seemed excited.
My home!
He yelled.
He looked so happy he started crying again.
How can I ever repay you,
Both tiny creatures?
You have saved my life.
You could have come and tried to cut me or hurt me,
But instead you helped me,
And for that I just want to say thank you.
Max and B reached out and they hugged the giant troll's big finger,
Because that's all that they could wrap their fingers around.
They said goodbye.
The troll with his big red watering eye waved goodbye and stepped through the hole that Max had cut in the air with his sword.
With that,
Max lowered his sword and the hole disappeared.
They had done it.
They had saved their world.
They turned around to try to figure out how they were going to get home when they saw the big brown owl flying towards them.
When he landed,
Even though his beak couldn't smile,
They could tell that he was happy.
Max,
B,
You both have saved the day.
This is a day of celebration,
And your names will go down in the history books forever.
I imagine that both of you are probably quite tired and ready to end this day of adventure.
So climb on my back and let me take you back to your parents,
Where life will be normal once again.
But I ask you,
Can I call on you for help if anything should happen again?
Max enthusiastically said yes,
And B was right there with him.
Please call on us if we can ever help you again.
They both felt like heroes.
They had saved the day.
They had seen unicorns,
Eaten giant strawberries and peaches,
Slept in a strange cabin,
Met a troll the size of a mountain,
Swam with colored fish and neon-colored slugs,
Wielded magic and rode on the back of a giant owl.
This was a day to remember.
They climbed on the back of the owl and began the journey home.
Once again the owl did a little bit of a trot and a jump and started flapping his wings,
And Max dug his hands into his feathers.
They were soaring through the air,
Going higher and higher,
Up into the clouds and then above.
The white,
Puffy clouds all around them,
The sun high in the air.
They moved closer and closer,
Flying over lakes and mountains and trees.
They began recognizing places and they knew they were getting close to home.
Their journey was coming to an end.
As the owl started going lower and lower and closer and closer,
They could see their home.
The red barn,
The giant oak tree with the swing,
The garden where their mom and dad were,
And their house coming closer and closer.
Soon they would be back home,
Sitting around the table,
Eating dinner with their parents,
And enjoying a wonderful evening at home.
Crawling into their own beds and letting themselves drift away into the dreams that only heroes can dream.
So good night,
Max and Bee,
Heroes of the realm of now.
Sleep tight and good night.
