T.
S.
Eliot once wrote,
We shall not cease from exploration,
And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.
This quote perfectly captures what the explorer archetype is about.
The explorer represents the human spirit's relentless quest for new knowledge,
Experiences,
And profound understanding derived from exploration,
Both of the external world and the inner self.
In this active imagination exercise,
We will go on a journey with your inner explorer,
Uncovering uncharted territories of your psyche,
Leading to growth and a greater understanding of yourself.
So first,
Just find a quiet and comfortable place to sit or lie down.
Close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths.
I'm going to start this exercise just with some basic meditation.
As you just clear out the mind of any disparates or unrelated thoughts.
So just keep your attention on the breath for now,
Wherever you happen to feel it the most.
Whether it's the air moving through the nostrils,
Or the rise and fall of the chest,
Or the abdomen.
If at any point you do get distracted,
Simply bring the attention back to the exercise.
Now,
Imagine yourself standing on the deck of a ship,
Ready to set sail.
This ship represents your readiness to venture into the unexplored aspects of your psyche.
First,
Survey the familiar lands behind you.
What do you notice there?
How does the landscape appear?
Are there any buildings?
Notice if there are any people.
And now,
Take notes of the ship you are standing on.
Examine its appearance,
Its various features.
As you survey the ship,
You notice a figure at the helm.
This is your inner explorer.
Take a moment to observe them.
How are they dressed?
What aura do they exude?
Approach them,
Ready to embark on your journey together.
Engage with your inner explorer.
Discuss your intentions for this voyage.
What uncharted territories of your mind or emotions do you wish to explore?
Where does your curiosity pull you?
Is it a hidden aspiration?
An unacknowledged part of your personality?
Or perhaps a new perspective on life?
Listen to where they suggest you go on this journey together.
The ship sets sail.
You head out into the open sea.
And gradually,
The shore behind you disappears.
The journey will not be without challenges.
As you sail,
As you sail the open sea,
What is it you encounter?
What challenges or conflicts appear?
Do you encounter any issues on the boat itself?
Or perhaps you encounter turbulent waters,
Stormy weather,
Or mysterious fogs?
Just allow the experience to unfold naturally.
And know that whatever appears symbolizes a new adventure.
Aspects of your own mind.
Note your reactions to these obstacles.
How does your inner explorer advise navigating them?
What tools or insights do they offer?
After navigating these challenges,
You eventually notice new lands appearing on the horizon.
Unknown territories of your psyche.
Watch as you gradually approach these lands.
Watch as you gradually approach these lands.
They could represent suppressed memories,
Hidden talents,
Or new perspectives.
And in your own time,
Disembark from the ship and begin exploring these new lands.
Take a good look around.
What is it you find here?
Take notes of the landscape.
Any natural features?
Are there any people here?
Or any creatures?
Do you find some kind of object?
Something valuable?
Or useful?
And now take notes of how your explorer behaves in this new landscape.
Do they have any comments?
Any wisdom for you?
Take some more time to explore this landscape.
And just allow it all to unfold naturally.
Before you return to your ship,
Choose something to take back with you on your return voyage home.
You could even ask your explorer for some guidance here.
Now,
With the object in hand,
Return to the ship.
Say farewell to these lands for now.
And disembark with your explorer back out into the open sea.
After some time,
You notice the familiar shores appearing in the distance.
As you get closer,
Notice what's different.
How has this adventure changed your perception of home and your understanding of yourself?
Do you notice any difference in the way you see the world around you?
Do you notice any difference in the way you think about the world around you?
Do you notice any differences to the landscape,
The buildings,
Or the people?
As you dock and return to these familiar lands,
Take another look around you and deliver your item from the new lands to the familiar lands.
And notice any other changes.
Take a moment now to express gratitude for this exploration,
Any insights gained,
And you may wish to journal after the exercise.
It's just allowing the image to fade now and coming back into the space around you.
Noticing any sounds or sensations.
Taking a deep breath and in your own time opening your eyes again.
