I think I can meditate better when sitting in a chair.
Is this okay?
Sure,
Go ahead and try it.
If it works better for you,
Then go ahead.
If you can meditate better by lying down,
Then go ahead,
Do it,
Lying down.
But the fact that the norm for meditation is become you do it while sitting down,
I think that's just learning,
Adaptation of behavior of hundreds of millions of people who have done it before.
However,
For those people who can't,
Who cannot physically,
Who's unable to sit in this position,
Feel free to meditate sitting down on a chair or standing up,
Whatever.
However,
The key point is that the whole point of meditation is to free yourself from chasing your desires.
So if the only reason that you want to meditate sitting in a chair is that your legs ache while being in a lotus position,
And you want to relieve that ache by sitting in a chair,
Then you're basically allowing your need for the relief of suffering,
Your desire,
Quote unquote,
To lead your decision.
So meditation is not just focusing on the breath,
But by focusing on the breath to free yourself from following your desires.
So what is the goal of meditation?
To arrive at a state without suffering.
To arrive at a state without distractions.
In the beginning,
The origin of this suffering is because of your attachment to your desires.
So when you free yourself from these attachments to your desires,
That's when the suffering disappears.
But how can you arrive at this state of nirvana,
Free from suffering,
When you actually pursue and allow desires to dictate your behavior?
That's why the position you take during meditation is not that important.
So why do you want to sit in a chair?
Do you want to sit in a chair because you can't sit?
Or do you want to sit in a chair because it's uncomfortable?
If that's your goal,
Then you can sit in a chair.
So the underlying question,
Central question,
When you make this decision is that why do you want to sit in a chair?
Is it because of the discomfort that you have sitting in a lotus position?
Or are you physically unable to sit in this lotus position?
So if you're allowing desire to dictate,
You may gain a temporary reprieve,
Comfort,
But ultimately,
You're kind of going in the wrong direction.
You're going against the ultimate objective of meditation.
In general,
Sitting down and meditating is the easiest and allows you to focus best.
However,
That doesn't necessarily mean it applies to everybody.
Therefore,
If you prefer sitting in a chair and meditating,
Go ahead and try.
