Little Jack needs a miracle.

Little Jack sneezed into the corner of his arm.

Forty-eight,

Said Emmalina.

Little Jack looked up at Emmalina for a second and then he sneezed again.

Forty-nine,

Said Emmalina.

Mama looked over at Little Jack and Emmalina,

Sitting across from each other at the breakfast table.

Emmalina looked at Mama.

Little Jack sneezed forty-nine times,

Mama,

Just this morning.

Emmalina shared a room with Little Jack and she had been counting since early in the morning.

Yeah,

Said Little Jack nodding.

I've been sneezing forty-nine times,

Mama.

It's a lot of sneezing,

Mama nodded.

All of us have been kind of runny-nosed and sneezing for a while now.

And he sneezed fifty-seven times last night,

Said Emmalina.

It is getting worse,

Isn't it?

Asked Mama.

Yeah,

Said Little Jack thoughtfully.

Yeah,

Said Emmalina shortly.

And it's hard to sleep when he's coughing so loud.

What?

Said Little Jack.

Coughing loud?

Yeah,

Said Emmalina.

You're coughing so loud in the middle of the night that I can't sleep sometimes.

We'll go see Dr.

Jenny,

Said Mama,

And see if she can help us figure out what's going on for you,

Little Jack.

If you are sick,

Maybe Dr.

Jenny knows how to cure it,

How to make it better.

Okay,

Said Little Jack.

The next morning,

Dr.

Jenny had an open appointment.

She was Little Jack and Emmalina's pediatrician.

That means she is a kid's doctor.

They had been going to her since they were newborn babies.

At the doctor's office,

Little Jack didn't cough or sneeze at all.

He was feeling a lot better,

And he liked playing with the wooden trains on the table by the couches.

Mama and Little Jack were led to a special room with a big,

Cushiony table and crinkly paper and astronauts painted on the wall.

Well,

Hello there,

Little Jack,

Said Dr.

Jenny in her big,

Happy voice when she came into the room.

Hi,

Said Little Jack,

Smiling.

Dr.

Jenny looked all over at Little Jack's throat and nose and ears.

She listened to his heartbeat,

Took his temperature,

And asked him to cough for her.

You're looking pretty good right now,

Said Dr.

Jenny.

Nothing in your lungs.

Sometimes he gets this really hard cough,

Said Mama,

And he's been sneezing so much at home.

Dr.

Jenny listened and nodded her head.

Well,

Mama,

She said,

It sounds like allergies to me.

Allergies are really normal around here because we've just got so many trees and grasses and pollen all around.

Later,

When Little Jack and Mama were driving home,

Little Jack asked,

Mama,

What is allergies?

Allergies are when your body's protectors,

Your immune system,

Attack something that isn't trying to hurt you,

Like pollen from flowers and trees.

Your body makes you sneeze and cough and make mucus to get it out,

But sometimes the protectors are extra super sensitive and it makes it hard for people to just enjoy playing outside.

Why,

Mama,

Asked Little Jack.

Why are the protectors extra super sensitive?

Hmm,

Said Mama.

That's a really important question.

Different people have different answers.

Do you want to know what I think it is?

Little Jack nodded.

Okay,

Said Mama.

I think it actually comes from your tummy,

From what we call your gut.

My gut?

Asked Little Jack.

Yeah,

Your gut is all the parts in your tummy that are digesting food for you and keeping all the good stuff and getting rid of all the bad stuff.

It's also an important part of your immune system,

Your body protectors.

Oh,

Said Little Jack,

Looking down at his tummy.

When we eat things that are good for our gut or our tummy,

It makes our protectors work better,

And when we eat things that are not good for our gut,

It can make our protectors feel pretty sensitive and on edge.

That's why I think they start attacking things like pollen with way more force than need sometimes.

If you do have allergies,

Mama added,

We should be able to help your protectors feel better by feeding your gut good foods.

So Mama and Papa went to work to help Little Jack with his allergies.

They tried all the things that helped their allergies in the past.

They didn't feed Little Jack's protectors any cow's milk because it could hurt his gut sometimes and make pollen allergies even sneezier.

They didn't feed his protectors any wheat gluten because that can also hurt the gut sometimes and can make your body feel cloggy and confused.

And they didn't feed his protectors any black pepper either because Emmalina really,

Really didn't like it,

And pepper sometimes causes allergies.

But they did eat honey from the neighborhood bees because that helps your body learn about the pollen in a friendly way.

And they also had their floors and beds cleaned with special machines because sometimes they were allergic to little things called dust mites.

They washed and rinsed their hair every time they went outside in case maybe somehow they were catching pollen in their hair.

But nothing seemed to help,

And it got especially bad when they all went to sleep.

In fact,

Everybody in the family seemed to be having allergies after a while,

And they just wouldn't go away.

But no one had them quite as bad as Little Jack.

His cough at night was really hard,

Really loud,

And it was a little scary.

Mama and Papa started to wonder if there might be something in their air system that was making everybody sick.

They hired a man to clean the metal tubes called air ducts,

Where air traveled from room to room from an air heater and an air cooler.

He said to Mama,

Well ma'am,

Your air ducts are a little dusty,

But I cleaned that right up for you.

As for something harmful,

Something that could make your family sick,

I didn't find anything like that.

How about mold,

Asked Mama.

Should we test for mold?

Well ma'am,

I can do a test for you if you like,

But I didn't see any mold spores on your air ducts.

As the man was leaving,

Little Jack asked,

What's mold,

Mama?

Mama squatted near Little Jack to talk with him.

Mold is something tiny,

Like pollen or dust,

But it works different,

And it's not very friendly to our bodies.

It can grow and make more of itself with little parts called spores,

But it also lets out little things called toxins into the air,

And that can make us feel pretty sick.

Oh,

Said Little Jack,

But hopefully the man is right and we don't have mold here.

I'm hoping the way he cleaned our air ducts that you'll be able to sleep better tonight.

Okay,

Said Little Jack,

But that night his cough was as bad as ever.

Then one morning Little Jack woke up feeling very hot.

Mama,

Little Jack said,

I'm hot.

Mama was helping Little Jack pull off his pajamas and get dressed for the day.

She laid the back of her hand on his forehead and it was very warm.

Then she tried feeling his forehead with her cool wrist on the inside of her arm.

Your forehead feels hot,

Said Mama.

Let's take your temperature,

Okay?

Okay,

Said Little Jack.

Emelina came into the doorway still brushing her teeth.

I feel hot too,

She said.

Okay,

We'll check both of your temperatures,

Said Mama.

In the kitchen Mama checked Little Jack's temperature with a small stick called a thermometer.

You have a little fever,

Mama said.

Then she washed the thermometer and then checked Emelina's temperature too.

You have a little fever too,

Said Mama.

It was the day before Little Jack and Emelina and Mama and Papa were going to leave and spend a week in a place with lots of snow and big mountains.

When Papa came into the kitchen,

Mama said,

The kids both have a fever.

Oh no,

Said Papa.

Are you two alright?

Yes,

Shrugged Emelina sniffling her runny nose.

Little Jack didn't answer.

He was slowly chewing a piece of his favorite avocado toast.

Papa lovingly rubbed Little Jack's forehead and tousled his hair.

Are you alright little buddy?

Little Jack made a little grunt.

Mmm,

Then he said,

I feel hot.

Yeah,

Said Papa.

You've got a fever,

Buddy.

Mama looked at Papa.

We can't go on this trip,

She said.

Papa looked thoughtfully at Mama.

There's something not right about this,

He said.

We need somebody who can help us figure this out.

Mama nodded thinking of all the people who had tried to help them so far.

Dr.

Jenny,

The floor cleaners,

The bed cleaners,

The air duct cleaner.

Then Mama remembered there was somebody who might be able to help even when no one else could.

How about Senora Esposito,

Mama asked Papa.

Yes,

Said Papa.

That's a good idea.

Who's Senora Esposito,

Asked Emelina.

You know Senora Esposito.

She's the body code teacher who helped us find out what foods were bothering you when you were very little.

And she helped me too when I was so tired.

She helped me find out that some foods I was eating were bothering my body.

And she's helped Papa with some things too.

Oh yeah,

Said Emelina slowly.

Then she asked,

Why is it called body code?

Well,

It's a way of talking to our bodies in the language or the way that our bodies communicate,

Mama explained,

Remembering the books Senora Esposito had told her about.

Our bodies use electrical signals that are strong or weak to say yes and no to questions.

Electrical signals,

Screeched Emelina.

Isn't electricity bad for our bodies?

Well,

Mama laughed a little.

That's a good point.

I see what you mean.

Because if we touch something electrical,

It can give a bad shock.

Yeah,

Said Emelina.

I don't want to get electrocuted.

Yeah,

Electrocuted is not good,

Right,

Mama agreed.

But our bodies are actually electrical already.

It's just that if we get too much electricity to go through our bodies,

That can mess our system up.

But,

Mama continued,

Every day and every minute,

Our body uses little electrical signals or messages to tell our muscles when to turn on or pull or tighten and when to turn off or relax or let go.

And the body code uses those on and off signals to say yes or no to a question.

Emelina stared into her smoothie wondering if what Mama said could be true.

Mama linked her fingers together and showed Emelina how she could feel when her finger muscles were feeling on for yes and off for no.

I can't feel it,

Said Emelina,

Trying with her own fingers.

Yeah,

Said Mama.

It was hard for me to feel it at first too.

I think it takes some practice with it.

While Emelina practiced tugging at her fingers,

Little Jack played in the corner of his large sunlit playroom,

And Mama looked up the number for Signora Esposito.

Mama set an appointment for a video call that afternoon.

Just like Mama had said,

Signora Esposito asked Little Jack's body questions that could have two answers,

Yes or no.

She had a big list of words on the papers in front of her.

She asked Little Jack's body if his fever was being caused by something on the first page she held up.

Even though Little Jack didn't know the answer in his head,

His body did know what was causing his fever.

Signora Esposito used energy to feel the yes and no answers that Little Jack's body was sending,

Even from far away.

She had been practicing the body code for many years and had become very quick at working through the list of words on her pages.

On the third page that she held up,

Signora Esposito felt a yes energy from Little Jack's body.

Okay,

Said Signora Esposito.

She pointed to the page where the words were stacked in five different sections.

Is there something in column one that is causing your fever?

She pointed to the first stack of words.

Signora Esposito received a no message.

Is there something in column two that is causing your fever?

She pointed to the second stack of words.

Signora Esposito received a no message again.

Is there something in column three that is causing your fever?

She pointed to the third stack of words.

Again,

Signora Esposito received a no message.

Is there something in column four that is causing your fever?

She pointed to the fourth stack of words.

This time,

Signora Esposito felt a yes message from Little Jack's body.

Okay,

She said again.

Then Signora Esposito began to read down the list one word at a time,

Asking every time,

Is it this that is causing your fever?

When Signora Esposito felt a yes from Little Jack,

She circled the word on the page.

It was mold,

Black mold.

Signora Esposito used her questions then to find where the mold was that was bothering Little Jack.

In the house,

In his bedroom,

Under the carpet.

Mama's mouth dropped open and Little Jack looked at Mama with big eyes.

Under the carpet,

Mama repeated.

Yes,

Answered Signora Esposito.

Even though Little Jack and Emelina shared a room,

Emelina slept in a big tall bed that she had to climb into with a ladder.

It was up high away from the carpet,

But Little Jack's bed was underneath hers,

Near the ground and right near the carpet where the mold was growing.

Mama dropped her head into her hand and shook her head slowly.

Little Jack whispered to Mama,

How can she feel my body energy say yes or no when she's not even here with us?

I don't exactly know,

Mama whispered back,

Peeking up at Little Jack,

But I do believe we're all connected through energy,

No matter how close together or how far apart we are.

Papa cleared his throat.

Signora Esposito,

We're deciding whether or not to take the kids to the mountains or to stay home with their fevers.

Let me ask,

She said.

She was quiet for a moment and then answered,

He will get better if you take him out of the house.

Get him into the fresh mountain air.

That night,

Mama and Papa pulled a big mattress from the guest bedroom downstairs into the living room where there wasn't any carpet,

Only smooth wooden floors.

Little Jack and Emelina had a slumber party there on the big clean mattress,

And Mama and Papa slept on either side of them,

Tucking them in from the drafty room.

The next morning,

Mama tested Little Jack's temperature again,

And it came out normal.

Emelina's did too.

Woohoo,

Cheered Mama.

Little Jack and Emelina did a happy wiggly dance,

And Papa played a fun celebration song that they all jumped and bounced and laughed to.

By the time they arrived in the mountains,

Little Jack's cough was gone.

In fact,

The whole family was feeling better.

Mama called and set an appointment to have all the carpet ripped out as soon as they got back,

And there was a lot of work to do to get the mold out of the house.

The man who had cleaned the airways came back again and tested the house for mold.

He said he still couldn't see much,

But sure enough,

His test from the wooden floor where the carpet had been taken away,

Under Little Jack's bed,

Came back positive for mold,

For black mold.

Mold is so tiny,

Mama,

Said Little Jack.

We couldn't even see it,

And it was hiding under the carpet,

Said Mama.

Mama and Little Jack were both quiet,

Thinking.

Then Mama said,

I love working with Senora Esposito.

I am so,

So glad she helped us find what was making me sick.

Me too,

Said Little Jack.

I just think it's so amazing how it can work.

Sometimes I can hardly believe it,

Said Mama,

Tucking Little Jack into bed in his new clean room.

Yeah,

Smiled Little Jack,

Letting his eyes get sleepy and close.

Like a miracle,

He whispered.

Yeah,

Whispered Mama,

Smiling.

Like a miracle.
