Welcome to this meditation,
Connecting to Air,
A meditation for making space.
Air is the element of movement,
Space,
And connection.
It is unseen,
Yet always present,
Flowing around us,
Within us,
And through every breath we take.
Air represents clarity of thought,
Communication,
And the ability to shift,
Adapt,
And expand.
In the body,
Air is experienced through our breath,
The constant exchange that sustains life and creates rhythm in each and every one of us.
When we connect with the element of air,
We invite lightness,
A release of tension,
And create room for new ideas,
Calm responses,
And intentional action.
Air reminds us that we don't have to hold everything tightly.
Like the breath,
We can let things move through us,
Making space for clarity,
Ease,
And flow in our lives.
So to invite in this air element and start making more space,
I invite you to find a comfortable position that allows you to be both relaxed but alert.
So you might be seated with your feet firmly on the ground,
Or you might be seated on a cushion or on the floor with your spine upright but supported by a wall,
Or maybe nothing at all.
Or you may be lying down.
Wherever you are,
I invite you to be about 10% more comfortable,
Maybe shifting or finding a little movement that allows more space.
If it feels comfortable,
Close your eyes.
If not,
You might just lower your gaze down the bridge of your nose or focus your eyes on one point in the room.
Take a slow breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
Again,
Inhale and exhale fully.
Let your breath settle in to a steady rhythm.
As you bring your attention to your breath,
Just noticing the air moving in and out,
Know that there's no need to change it,
Just to notice it.
Maybe noticing that with every inhale,
Space is entering your body.
And with every exhale,
Space is being created.
Even with a full schedule,
With a long to-do list,
There's always room for one breath.
I invite you now to scan your body,
Maybe noticing your jaw and allowing it to unclench.
Allow your shoulders to release,
Maybe letting them drop away from the ears and softening your chest.
Maybe take a deeper breath in than the last.
And as you exhale,
Imagine tension leaving your body like air escaping from a valve.
It's effortless.
Bring your attention to your hands.
Often we are holding and carrying more than we need to.
So for just this moment,
Let them rest,
Softening the palms and the fingertips.
And as you notice your abdomen or stomach,
Allow it to expand naturally with your inhale.
And as you exhale,
Knowing you don't need to hold everything together right now,
You can release.
And noticing the legs and the feet doing the same.
Breathing in,
Creating space.
Breathing out,
Releasing pressure.
I invite you now to notice your thoughts.
Maybe they are swirling.
Maybe there's a lot of thoughts or maybe just a few.
Maybe they're on task and deadlines,
Past conversations or upcoming decisions.
Whatever the thoughts are,
Instead of engaging with them,
Imagine that each thought has a little notification floating across the screen of your mind.
You can see it,
But you don't have to open it.
Let it pass through.
Your mind does not need to solve everything in this moment.
So with each inhale,
Create a little distance from the thoughts.
And with each exhale,
Let go of your urgency.
You are not your to-do list.
And there is space between you and everything that you're carrying.
Now bring your focus back to the air itself.
Air is always moving,
Circulating,
Never holding on to anything for too long.
So let that be your model now.
You can move through your day the same way.
Engaged but not holding.
Responsive but not overwhelmed.
Maybe call to mind your next challenge.
And see yourself meeting it with space around it.
Not reactive,
Just clear and steady.
As you return to your day,
Maybe carry these sensations,
These feelings,
These thoughts with you.
You can pause before responding.
You can take one breath before the next task.
You can create space even in the middle of a pressured day.
Space is not something that you find.
It's something that you create with your breath and your awareness.
Taking one more slow,
Full inhale,
Feeling the space and the expansion in the body.
And then exhaling completely,
Expanding into the space around you.
Gently bring your awareness back to your surroundings.
Maybe noticing sounds or the way it feels to sit where you are in this moment.
Taking your time,
Reminding your nervous system that you have all the time in the world in this moment.
But when you are ready,
You can begin to open your eyes,
Bringing in the light,
Taking in what's around you.
Knowing you can return to this space anytime you need for as long as you need.
But for now,
Moving forward with a little more space than you had before.
Be well.
