After more than a decade of coaching people,
I have discovered something powerful,
But actually very simple.
You do not create lasting change by forcing habits.
You create it by changing who you believe you are.
When people want to reinvent themselves,
They usually start with different goals,
Right?
I will wake up at 5 a.
M.
I will meditate every morning.
I will start doing cold plunges.
These are great habits,
But they don't change who you are.
That's why some people can build good habits for a while,
But they often end up right where they started.
So here's your first exercise.
Ask yourself,
Who am I?
Write down as many answers as you can.
Your roles,
Your traits,
Your patterns,
Everything that comes to your mind.
You might be a parent,
A leader,
A healer,
But maybe also a perfectionist or a people pleaser.
Awareness is where the transformation always begins.
Your identity.
The behavior will follow naturally.
A person who says,
I'm trying to run,
Is forcing a change.
And a person who says,
I am a runner,
Doesn't think about it.
They just lace up their sniggers and off they go.
Here's the key.
You don't need discipline when your actions fit your story.
A vegetarian does not resist meat.
It simply does not align with their identity.
Even if externally this change did not happen just yet,
Imagine this new version of you.
Who is that you that already lives the life that you want?
How do they feel?
How do they show up?
What do they do?
So let's start with your identity shift.
Step number one,
Decide who do you want to become?
What are their values,
Principles?
Don't just describe habits.
Define the inner world and how they feel as detailed as you can.
Are they a successful business owner or someone who build a magnificent career in a bank or a loving partner or a successful musician.
Step number two,
Let the old self die.
Become a phoenix.
Stop holding to who you used to be.
This can be deeply uncomfortable and that's actually a sign that you're growing.
And sometimes the people around you will resist this change too.
For example,
Imagine you have always struggled in relationships and suddenly you decide to release the victim identity and become someone who believes that they You deserve love.
If your friends are still unhappy in their love lives,
Your transformation might feel threatening to them because it also forces them to look at their own path.
They might not celebrate your happiness right away.
You may notice distance or tension simply because their new identity no longer fits the shared story that you both once had.
And maybe also in the past you actually bonded over struggle.
So remember this truth.
In life,
Nobody's a friend,
Nobody's an enemy,
But everyone is your enemy.
Teacher.
As long as some people in your life stay where they are and you keep growing,
Your path may naturally separate.
Step number three.
Embody the new identity.
It's very important not to pretend here,
But imagine that this already has happened.
Great actors don't fake their roles,
Right?
They become them.
For example,
Heath Ledger,
When preparing for Joker,
He isolated himself for six weeks,
Studying the character's psychology,
The voice,
The worldview.
He practiced until it felt natural,
Maybe way too natural.
If saying,
I'm successful feels too far,
Try to say,
I'm becoming the kind of person who succeeds.
And actually,
The question is,
What is success?
To me,
Success is inner fulfillment.
It's nothing,
Nothing in relation to the external factors,
But it's how you feel when nobody else is watching.
Practice your new self in new environments.
Go somewhere where nobody knows you and try her on or him on.
Maybe go to a cafe or fitness club.
Choose one small way to embody your new identity today.
Changing who you are takes time.
It's like learning to ride a bike.
You get better the more you practice.
When you start acting like the person who you want to be,
You will begin to see good things happen.
Those things will make you believe,
Hey,
I actually am that person.
And the more you believe in it,
The easier it gets for you to keep acting that way.
And after a while,
You don't have to try so hard.
It's just you.
What really matters is showing up and being consistent.
Even on hard days,
That is how you grow.
And when life changes,
Like a breakup,
New job,
Or move,
This is a very good chance to become an even better version of yourself.
So instead of asking,
What should I do now?
You can ask,
Do I want to be?
Every little choice you make helps to build that future you.
Believe in the person you are becoming and your life will follow.
