The blue hour has settled over a small town a long time ago, and the old lamplighter steps out of his low green door to walk the round he has walked every evening for more years than he can easily count. You fall into step beside him and go slowly downhill through the cobbled streets while he wakes each lamp to a slow bloom of gold. Shutters are drawn. The baker banks down his oven for the night. A cat yawns on a garden wall. Mist lifts off the river. Nothing hurries, and nothing at all is at stake. The story does not end so much as dissolve, and there is no closing bell. Soft rain and brown noise carry on for a further thirty minutes afterwards and fade slowly to silence, so the hour finishes long after you have gone. You are not meant to hear the last of it. Drifting off somewhere in the middle, before the final lamp is lit, is exactly the point.
