Morning Walk is a poem that was inspired by the nature beings I encountered during one of my early summer morning walks. It is a reflection of what we can receive when we slow down, are mindful, and pay attention to the messages that surround us. Those messages can be inspirational and they can also be questions that challenge our sometimes gray outlook on life.

What makes you smile?

What brings your heart joy?

What little things transform your perspective and state of mind for the day ahead?

The first bloom of an unexpected flower of foxglove,

Illuminated in the morning light with a dusting of fairy magic and belief in you.

Nothing is as hard as it seems.

Suspend disbelief.

Believe in the potential,

Your potential,

To shine.

And that you are held and guided the whole way.

The robin with his freshly dug up breakfast,

Muddy,

Dangling just so from his bright yellow beak.

Does the early bird truly catch the worm?

An outdated notion of outdated expectations,

Of needing to be something you are not.

The scent of roses permeating the air,

My every step,

My very being.

The sounds of the waterfall tumbling,

Goldfinches and cardinals singing,

Drowning out the last vestiges of disbelief in your own path.

Their colors unseen,

Yet known,

A delightful cheer against a sometimes gray mental picture.

Bring it all into focus,

Release and wash away those fears,

Thoughts of not belonging,

Of a path too difficult to undertake.

Release those things and embrace the delight of the new day and of what makes you smile,

Of what brings your heart joy.
