Take a moment to find a comfortable position,
Whether you're sitting or lying down.
Gently close your eyes,
Or soften your gaze downward.
Let's begin by understanding what we're working with today,
Sadness.
Sadness is that heavy,
Tender feeling that arrives when we've experienced loss,
Disappointment,
Or deep longing.
It's the ache of missing something or someone.
The weight of unfulfilled hope.
It's the silence that settles in when things don't go as we wished.
Take a gentle breath and ask yourself,
Do I know this feeling?
Have I felt sadness recently,
Or perhaps it's just been sitting with me for a while?
There's no need to answer out loud.
Simply notice what arises.
Now with gentle curiosity,
Turn your attention inward to your body.
Where do you feel sadness living right now?
Perhaps it's a heaviness in your chest,
A tightness in your throat,
A weight in your shoulders,
Or maybe it's settled deep in your stomach.
Without judgment,
Without trying to change,
Simply observe.
Where is sadness making its home within you today?
Place your awareness there.
You might even rest a hand on that place,
Acknowledging this is where I'm holding my sadness in this present moment.
Now imagine you could breathe directly into that space.
As you inhale,
Picture warm gentle light flowing to that exact space where sadness lives.
Not to push it away,
But to keep it company.
With each exhale,
Imagine the sadness softening just slightly,
Not disappearing,
But being held with compassion.
Breathe in,
Surrounding your sadness with kindness.
Breathe out,
Allowing it to be exactly as it is.
This sadness is here for a reason.
It's telling you that something mattered to you,
That you care deeply,
And that you are human and living your life fully.
Let's honor what this sadness represents.
Silently or in your heart,
You might acknowledge what you're sad about.
What did you lose?
What do you long for?
What disappointment are you carrying?
And now,
Can you offer yourself the same compassion you'd give to a dear friend?
Can you say,
Even silently,
It makes sense to feel this way?
This is hard,
But I'm allowed to be sad.
With your next few breaths,
Imagine the sadness beginning to move.
Not leaving entirely,
But flowing like water.
Maybe it rises up from your stomach to your chest,
Flows down your arms,
Or even releases through your breath.
You're not getting rid of it,
You're allowing it to move through you,
The way all emotions are meant to do.
As we continue to feel,
Take one more deep breath into the space where sadness resides,
And as you exhale,
Imagine creating just a little more room inside yourself.
Room for the sadness,
And also room for peace.
Room for grief,
And also room for hope.
They can all exist together.
Now begin to bring gentle movement back to your body.
Wiggling your fingers and your toes,
Rolling your shoulders.
When you're ready,
Slowly open your eyes.
Thank yourself for taking the time to honor your sadness,
To sit with it,
And to remind yourself that feeling deeply is a part of being beautifully,
Courageously human.
