These practices help us get in the habit of turning towards as opposed to suppressing our painful emotions. Most of have the goal is to "feel better", but the intention with self-compassion is to increase compassion, reduce criticism, and recognize that the experience of suffering is a part of being human. It takes so much courage to turn toward yourself in this way.
