It's the middle of the night.
You woke up.
And now,
Your mind has switched on.
Maybe it happens most nights.
The 3 a.
M.
Wake-up call.
For a dysregulated nervous system,
This is so common.
The body wakes.
The stress response flickers on.
And suddenly,
You're wide awake,
With a racing mind in the dark.
I want you to know,
This is not your fault.
This is your nervous system,
Not a character flaw.
And we can gently guide it back towards rest.
So stay lying down.
Keep your eyes closed,
Or softly closed.
Don't reach for your phone.
Just stay here,
In the dark.
Feel the weight of your body on the bed.
Feel how held you are by the mattress.
Of blankets.
Medal of the Night.
And you are safe.
Nothing is wrong right now.
There's nowhere you need to be.
Nothing you need to do.
Let's slow the breath.
Breathe in through your nose.
And out slowly.
Longer.
I can.
And a long,
Slow breath out.
That long exhale tells your nervous system.
The alarm is not needed.
We are safe.
We can rest.
Keep breathing.
Slow.
And low.
Notice what your mind is doing.
At 3am,
The mind can be traumatic.
Worries feel bigger.
Problems feel heavier.
Everything feels more urgent and more hopeless than it will in the morning.
This is not the truth.
This is just the 3am nervous system.
In the dark,
With fewer distractions,
The stress response quietly activated.
The mind magnifies it.
Whatever it's telling you right now.
You don't have to believe it.
Nothing needs to be solved at 3am.
The night is not for problem solving.
It's the time for rest.
Stay quietly inside.
This is just the 3am mind.
I don't have to believe it or fix it.
Nothing needs solving right now.
Here's the paradox.
The more you try to force yourself back to sleep,
The more awake you become.
The frustration.
Why am I awake?
I need to sleep.
I'll be exhausted tomorrow.
That frustration activates you more.
So we're going to do the opposite.
We're going to stop trying.
Say to yourself.
It's okay that I'm awake right now.
I don't have to force sleep.
Resting here quietly is enough.
Even lying still.
Breathing slowly.
Is deeply restorative.
If seed comes,
Wonderful.
If it doesn't come right away,
You are still resting.
Take the pressure off.
There is no failing here.
Now let's soften the body back down.
Feel your body heavy on the bed.
Your feet heavy.
Your legs loose and heavy.
Your hips and belly softening.
Your shoulders drooping.
Your jaw unclenching.
Your face soft.
With each breath out,
Sink a little deeper into the bed.
Feel the warmth of the blankets.
The safety of the dark.
A quiet night around you.
There is nothing to do but rest.
Breathe in.
And out slowly.
Safe.
You don't have to fall asleep.
You just have to rest here,
Letting your body be held.
Let your mind grow soft and aimless.
If a worry drifts in.
Let it drift back out.
You'll meet everything in the morning.
With a clearer mind and more strength.
For now.
There is only this.
Your slow breath.
Your heavy,
Resting body.
Let yourself drift.
Slow.
Nothing to do.
Nothing to solve.
Just rest.
And the night hold you.
Rest now.
You're safe.
Let it come.
