The story of Atargatis is the first officially recorded mermaid story. The story originates from ancient Assyria—the land of the fertile crescent moon. Atargatis was the goddess of fertility, the goddess of the ocean, the moon, and the goddess of love. Early people both feared and revered sea goddesses. The sea possesses opportunities as well as threats. The temple of Atargatis did exist in the city of Ascalon. The story goes that the worshiper had to swim through a pool of fish to get to the pedestal where the statue of Atargatis was standing. The fish were taken care of by the temple keepers. The palace was told to be lavished with gold and jewels on the walls and the ceiling.
