What if aging well was less about luck and more about what you know and do?
I'm Dr.
Linda Friedland,
And this is the Longevity Blueprint.
You've heard all about GLP-1s,
Zempik,
Wegovi,
Munjara.
And if you've wondered,
Should I be taking one of these,
You're not alone.
As a doctor,
It's one of the most common questions I'm asked right now.
So today,
Let's cut through the noise.
What are these medications really?
GLP-1 is a hormone that we all naturally produce in our gut.
Its job is to regulate our blood sugar,
Signal fullness to your brain and reduce your appetite.
The medications you've heard of were designed to mimic this hormone and they were not originally created for weight loss.
They were developed to treat type 2 diabetes and serious metabolic disease.
For people living with obesity,
Insulin resistance,
Or significant cardiovascular heart risk,
They can be genuinely life-changing.
They are not vanity drugs.
For many people,
They are medicine.
The numbers are striking,
But the weight loss isn't the most important part.
In clinical trials,
These medications produce an average weight loss of 10 to 20% of one's body weight,
Far beyond what most lifestyle interventions achieve.
But here's what matters more for longevity.
In a major cardiovascular trial involving over 17,
000 adults,
Semaglutide reduced the risk of heart attack,
Stroke,
And cardiovascular disease by more than 20%.
And some of those benefits appeared before the weight loss had even occurred.
That tells us something important.
These drugs may be acting directly on vascular inflammation and on the deeper biology of metabolic aging,
Not just on the numbers on the scale.
And here's what many people aren't being told.
Longevity is not about becoming lighter.
It's about becoming stronger.
In studies of GLP-1 medications,
A significant proportion of weight loss,
This is important,
Sometimes 20 to 40% can come from muscle,
Not just fat.
And muscle is one of the most important longevity organs we have.
It regulates our blood sugar,
Protects our bones,
It reduces our fall risk.
And we need to look after and maintain metabolic muscle.
A smaller body with less muscle is not a healthier body.
So if you are taking one of these medications or considering it,
A few things become really non-negotiable.
Prioritize your protein,
Your strength training,
Track your muscle mass,
Not just your weight,
And always work with your doctor.
These are tools,
They're powerful tools,
But still tools.
No medication replaces the fundamentals.
Move your body,
Exercise,
Build and protect muscle,
Nourish yourself.
Prioritize sleep,
Manage your stress.
The best question isn't Ozempic good for me or bad.
It's what kind of health am I building?
Is this a tool I require?
There is no shame in using medication to improve your health,
And there's no virtue in struggling unnecessarily with obesity or overweight.
The most powerful decision you can make is always one informed and made with a clinician you can trust.
If this conversation resonated with you,
There's more to come.
This series is about understanding the biology of aging well,
Not just living longer,
But living stronger.
Until next time,
Age boldly,
Live well.
Make good choices.
