Oxygen Advantage method. The diaphragm is an important muscle for controlling posture. It creates pressure in the abdomen when we breathe in. This pressure acts like an inflated balloon, stabilizing and supporting the spine and pelvis. Before lifting weights, a weightlifter takes a deep breath and holds it to create high pressure in the abdomen, which makes the spine more rigid. Functional breathing patterns create optimal pressure and stiffness in the spine, helping with posture during movement. When our breathing is healthy, the lower rib cage expands sideways. This only happens if there is enough pressure pushing the ribs outward.
