A morning practice for returning to yourself.
The world reaches for you,
Stay here.
Just for a moment.
Before the messages before the plans.
Before you remember all the things that need your attention.
Before you become who the day asks you to be,
Stay with yourself.
Allow your eyes to close.
And your body to soften.
And take a slow,
Deep breath in.
Let it go.
Again,
Breathe in.
And exhale.
Allowing the breath to leave without holding on to it.
There is something almost sacred about these first few moments of the day.
A small space before everything begins.
Before the noise finds you.
Before your attention gets scattered into a hundred different places.
Notice how you arrived this morning.
Maybe there is heaviness.
Maybe there is anticipation.
Maybe your mind has already traveled far ahead of your body.
Maybe you've traveled into conversations that haven't happened yet.
Problems that haven't arrived.
And questions that don't yet have answers.
Come back to the place where you actually are.
Feel the weight of your body.
Feel the breath moving through you.
Feel the quiet rhythm beneath all the thinking.
Your mind will always find somewhere to go.
That is what minds do.
But awareness gives you another choice.
So this morning before the world chooses for you,
Ask yourself,
What deserves my energy today?
Allow the question to settle.
Maybe what deserves your energy is something very ordinary.
Your body.
Your work.
A person you love.
Conversation you've been avoiding.
The meal in front of you.
A walk outside.
The courage to take one small step towards something that matters.
Maybe what deserves your energy today is you.
We can become so accustomed to giving ourselves away.
To responsibility.
To worry.
To keeping the peace.
To being available.
To trying to anticipate what everyone around us might need.
And sometimes by the end of the day,
There is almost nothing left.
So notice this.
Your attention is not an endless resource.
Neither is your energy.
And there is a wisdom in choosing where they go.
Now ask yourself another question.
What am I willing to stop feeding energy to today?
Perhaps it's an old conversation you keep replaying.
Maybe it's someone.
Someone's opinion of you.
The need to know how everything will turn out.
Comparison.
Resentment.
A mistake that has already taught you what it came to teach you.
Or maybe a future you have been trying to control from the present.
There is no need to fight these things.
Or to push them away.
You can simply stop building a home for them inside you.
A thought can appear and you can let it pass.
A feeling can rise.
And you can allow it to move through.
Something can matter.
Without consuming you.
This is the quiet power of awareness.
The space between what happens and what you choose to do with it.
Take another breath.
Slowly inhale.
And release.
Now imagine the day ahead of you.
Not every detail.
Just the shape of it.
There may be things you cannot predict.
Something may take longer than you hoped.
Plans may change.
Someone may disappoint you.
You may lose your patience.
You may forget everything you are practicing right now.
And that is okay.
The practice is not about perfection.
The practice is about returning.
Returning to the breath.
Returning to the body.
Returning to the question.
Does this deserve my energy?
You can ask this question in the middle of an argument.
Before you answer the text.
Before you say yes.
Before you spiral into a story that may not even be true.
Before you give another hour of your life to something that cannot give anything back.
Does this deserve my energy?
Sometimes the answer will be yes.
Love does.
Truth does.
Courage does.
The difficult things that move your life forward often do.
This isn't about avoiding discomfort.
It's about knowing the difference between discomfort that asks you to grow and the noise that simply asks you to disappear inside of it.
Your body often knows the difference before your mind does.
So listen.
How do you want to move through this day?
Not what do you want to accomplish,
Not how much can you get done.
How do you want to inhabit your life today?
Maybe with steadiness.
Curiosity.
Courage.
Maybe it was softness.
Clear boundaries.
Maybe with joy.
Choose one word.
Let it find you.
Instead of making that word another thing to achieve,
Let it become somewhere you can return.
A compass you carry with you.
When the day becomes loud,
Return.
When you forget yourself.
Return.
When you realize you've been carrying something that was never yours,
Put it down.
And return.
You will begin again many times today.
That is the practice.
Take one final deep breath in.
Fill the lungs slowly.
And release.
Feel yourself here.
Before the world gets your energy.
Before it tells you what is urgent,
Important,
Impressive,
Necessary.
Remember,
You get to participate in that decision.
Your attention is your life in pieces.
Where you place it.
Is where your life goes.
So choose with care.
Give yourself to what matters.
Protect what needs protecting.
Let go of what is already taken enough.
And when you lose your way.
Come back.
One breath,
One moment,
One choice at a time.
Whenever you're ready.
Open your eyes.
And begin.
