This bedtime story is the sixth in the '12-days of Christmas bedtime stories' series, related to 'six geese a-laying'. This bedtime story for grown-ups is about an owl who flies through a forest when they notice something happening. They encounter some animals and then see six geese. Watching with intrigue, animals start appearing where the geese are. The geese lay their eggs. One of the animals explains that this is an important ritual within the forest, to see the continuation of life when these geese lay their eggs. At the end of the experience, the Owl heads back to their perch and falls asleep into Slumberland.

So just take a moment to allow your eyes to close and allow yourself to begin to relax and as you begin to comfortably fall asleep.

I don't know whether you'll drift asleep faster to the sound of my voice or whether it'll be to the spaces between my words.

And as you comfortably fall asleep I'm just going to tell this bedtime story in the background and this story is about an owl who lives in a forest and it's Christmas Eve and there's a layer of snow glistening under the fading twilight and the sky is a deep beautiful blue sky as the last of the day fades away and the stars blink to life and high in the branches of an ancient oak tree sits an owl silent and motionless,

Her golden eyes wide and watchful catching the glow of the rising moon and the owl surveys the sleeping world beneath her,

The air so crisp and sharp,

Laced with the most beautiful scent of the pine and a freshness to the cold air and as the occasional breeze catches the trees so some of the snow gently floats to the ground like dusting,

Settling lazily through the air and the owl blends so well with the bark of the tree,

Barely visible to passers by and the landscape looks so gentle and calm,

As night sets in and it's as if everything is preparing to sleep the occasional breeze making the trees gently rock and far off in the distance is a brook trickling through this forest,

The edges of which are covered with ice,

The sound barely audible to anyone but an owl the snow cushioning any reflections of sounds,

Absorbing the echoes,

The night deepening around the forest the stillness almost palpable,

A deep sense of peace and calm,

The occasional distant sound of birds as they settle into the trees for the night and other sounds of other creatures and some sounds of creatures waking for the night and the owl drops off the branch,

Spreads their wings and silently and gracefully slices through the cool air flying through this forest,

Looking down upon the landscape,

The silvery light of the moon reflecting like diamonds across the snow shadows under the trees dancing in the very slight occasional breeze,

The landscape giving a serene beauty the owl flying so effortlessly,

Barely moving their wings,

As she flies she sees a den with a fox coming out of that den and she can sense that there are other foxes still wrapped up warm and comfy within the den she follows the brook as it leads down to a lake and as she flies over the lake,

Its stillness makes it reflect almost like a mirror and she lands on a branch of a tree near the lake,

As she watches six geese swimming around in that lake and then she notices those geese leaving the lake,

Heading to their nests and she watches on with intrigue,

Curious about what's happening with those geese and then she sees that there are other animals heading over towards those geese a badger,

The fox she saw earlier,

A deer,

A squirrel these various animals from within the forest are all heading to those geese and then they stand around the geese and as she watches on,

And those geese are resting there on those nests and the owl notices that each one is laying an egg and the circle of animals seem to have bought different items from throughout the forest,

Moss and twigs to help pad out each nest,

To help support those newly laid eggs in surviving through the winter and the owl watches each egg being laid and those six geese lay those eggs and rest on those eggs,

Keeping them warm looking after those eggs until they're ready to hatch and as the days pass on,

From day to day through the winter so those geese remain on those eggs and the animals of the forest come and go to keep an eye on those geese and those eggs supporting those geese through this process before eventually one day the eggs begin to hatch as the snow begins to clear and once all of the eggs have hatched so the owl can see all those geese on that lake the animals watching on,

Praising this new life in the forest and after a night of relaxing and watching the goings on of these geese the owl settles down and drifts and floats so peacefully,

So relaxed asleep into slumberland
