This is a short reflection on resting in the in-between.
There's a phase in healing that doesn't get talked about very often.
And it's the phase where nothing dramatic is happening,
But everything is changing.
It's the in-between.
The place where you're no longer operating from the same urgency you used to,
But you're not fully stabilized in something new yet either.
Your old patterns don't fit the way they used to,
But your new patterns don't feel automatic either.
And in that space,
It can feel very confusing.
You might notice you're not as reactive in conversations,
Or you pause before responding,
Or you don't push through exhaustion in the same way.
Or maybe you're not trying to optimize every decision.
But you're also not sure what to do with that space now that it's opened up.
Because urgency used to fill it.
Productivity used to fill it.
Problem solving used to fill it.
Hypervigilance used to fill it.
And now there's quiet.
Or slowness.
Or neutrality.
And for a nervous system that's been trained to equate activation with safety,
That quiet can feel threatening.
It can feel like you're falling behind.
You're losing your edge.
You're becoming complacent.
But often what's actually happening is your system is recalibrating.
You're learning how to rest in the absence of urgency.
You're learning that not every moment needs to be filled with analysis,
Or effort,
Or improvement.
This in-between phase is where integration happens.
It's where your system begins to understand that nothing bad is happening right now,
Even if you're not solving something.
And that's a new experience.
So if you find yourself in a moment where you're not activated,
You're not overwhelmed,
But you also don't know what to do with the calm,
See if you can just let that be enough.
See if you can rest there without rushing to fill it.
Because performance that's built on urgency requires urgency to sustain itself.
But performance that's built on regulation can hold steady,
Even in stillness.
And the only way your nervous system learns that stillness is still safe is by spending time there.
So the next time you notice a pause,
A quiet moment,
A breath before reacting,
See if you can just stay.
For a few seconds longer than you normally would.
That's where capacity builds.
If you'd like additional support integrating this experience,
There's also a companion meditation available called Resting in the In-Between.
You're welcome to explore that whenever it feels right for you.
See you soon.
