This is a three-minute pre-meal grounding practice,
Preferably done before breakfast,
Even when you're rushing.
Take a moment right now,
Even though I know you're in a hurry,
Just pause.
Place your hands on the table or counter in front of you.
Feel the surface beneath your palms,
Cool or warm.
Smooth or textured.
Take one deep breath in through your nose.
And out through your mouth.
You're about to eat.
Your body has been without food all night.
And now you're giving it nourishment.
That's worth three minutes of your attention.
Look at what you're about to eat.
Just really look.
Notice the colors on your plate,
The shapes.
The way the light hits the surface.
And now,
Bring the food closer to your nose.
Don't eat yet,
Just smell the aroma.
What do you notice?
Maybe you smell nothing at first,
And that's okay.
Or just being curious here.
Take another breath.
As you breathe in,
See if you can detect any aroma at all.
Notice what's happening in your mouth.
Is it watering?
Can you feel your body anticipating this food?
In a moment,
You're going to take your first bite.
But before you do,
Just acknowledge,
I'm here,
I'm present,
I'm about to eat.
I'm going to pay attention to this experience.
You don't necessarily have to eat slowly.
You don't have to make this meal last forever.
But for this first bite.
.
.
I want you to be fully present.
Take that first bite.
Notice the texture first,
Before you even start to chew.
What does it feel like on your tongue and in your palate?
Now?
Chew slowly.
What flavors emerge initially?
How does the texture change as you continue to chew?
And then swallow when you're ready.
That's it.
You've just eaten one bite with complete awareness.
Congratulations.
The rest of your meal can unfold however it needs to.
But pat yourself on the back that you started with presence.
That truly matters.
Enjoy your breakfast and enjoy your day.
