Why Being Like Ted Lasso Works
I wrote a song called Believe before I watched the Ted Lasso Series on Apple TV. I love that there is a character out there who believes in being positive, giving the underdog a chance and has a great way of doing the right thing. I encourage you to be that person and to believe and be positive.

Aloha,
I'm Reverend Cindy Palos and today I'd like to talk about the power of believing and the power of being optimistic.
And how this ties in with a series I've come to love.
When I wrote a song called Believe,
I had never heard of the Ted Lazo series and someone recommended it to me and I started watching it and it was like,
Became my favorite show to watch.
I just love that attitude that is expressed so beautifully in Ted Lazo series.
It's got an interesting background that I think we can all learn lessons from.
Basically,
It was going to be a way for the NBC Sports had bought the streaming rights to Premier League and English Soccer League and they knew that in America,
That popularity of soccer wasn't anything near where it was of course in the rest of the world in England.
So they had to do a marketing and promotional plan to back up that $250 million streaming deal,
Right?
So they called on Jason Sudeikis to do a TV spot where he played Lazo,
An American football coach who was mistakenly hired to coach the Tottenham Hotspurrs in the Premier League.
So he did that and Jason had already had a background in comedy and he took to that character very well and carried it on.
And then they came up with the idea of writing the Ted Lazo show and it kind of got turned down.
No enthusiasm to get behind the series but Apple TV picked it up and it became one of the most popular shows on Apple TV.
And the recent Emmys,
The show was nominated for 20 awards and also got a Golden Globe Award,
An Outstanding Comedy Award Series to individual outstanding actor and actors awards.
It took off and I was shocked when I found out that other people also loved it because I always like being positive and optimistic and I'm often told I'm like Pollyanna,
Right?
It's like,
Oh gosh,
Really?
I mean I work in radio and it's,
You know,
A lot of the people there are kind of cynical and don't think I have the right attitude.
So I could definitely relate to this.
You know what?
It's so based on the principles that I believe in and the values that I try to teach and I have been living by for a long,
Long time because it's the same things I have found by getting in touch with myself and in meditation and metaphysics and at the same time it has a Zen quality about it.
There's so many great quotes that come from this series.
As the man once said,
The harder you work,
The luckier you get.
I've never believed in luck.
I've always said that,
That it's not luck,
It's the work you put into it.
When people say,
You know,
They have a great kid and you tell them they've got a wonderful child and they say,
I'm just lucky.
No,
I say it's not luck,
It's the hard work you put into it,
Right?
And it's interesting also that I love the fact that I've been in rock and roll as a DJ for so many years,
About 45 years.
And so it was like being in a locker room,
Believe me,
In lots of ways.
And in this series,
It was decided that they were going to try to break down that macho attitude that you get in locker rooms.
And I love that about the series as well.
There's that great quote,
I do love a locker room,
It smells like potential.
So,
Yeah,
There's the great,
Great moment when he puts up Believe on the wall over his office,
Right over the wall before you walk into his office.
And I saw that not knowing that,
You know,
Other people had already fallen in love with the series and it becomes so big.
And I have this song I wrote called Believe.
And it's a children's song that I'm doing that's going to be out on an album.
It's actually already done with some wonderful singers,
Wonderful singers that I love.
Children actually on it from the Maui High School here and even children from the high school where Yuvaldi and the shooting happened,
Some of them singing.
And Anthony Fluke,
Who's a 20 year old wonderful singer who has a beautiful voice.
You know,
I wanted that innocence in the power of believing.
And when I saw that a lot of the Ted Lazo series was based around believing,
I was just so impressed because I really know that it's important to believe.
I've written many,
Many poems about believing.
What lyrics that I wrote that are in the song go,
Believe you are the light that shines forth day and night.
Now we know light shines forth in the day,
But to get it to shine forth at night,
Yeah,
That's when we need that light the most is when there is the darkness,
Right?
That's when you really need it.
And the next line is you can be it if you believe.
Now I've thought a lot because when you write lyrics,
You kind of go over them.
And the word be,
Of course,
Is in believe.
I've broken down many times the word believe,
You think of it,
It's very close to be life.
Be live,
Right?
Believe,
Be live.
You got to live that being,
That part of being human,
A human being is that power of living with your being and believing you can do what you dream,
Right?
The next line in my lyrics go,
You are the magic of a rainbow,
The smile of love,
A song of joy that brings us hope.
It's all possible when you believe.
Now this particular children's song I'm writing,
I wrote,
Is going to be used as a children's album for children with disabilities,
To raise funds for children with disabilities.
And again,
We've always said with this wonderful group that Rupam Sarma has that there's ability in disability.
And there are,
And there are so many challenges that children with disabilities have,
But they have so much strength that comes forth when they do believe,
When they sing,
When they play music.
As Rupam Sarma wrote a movie called One Little Finger about believing.
He believed in the concept of these children finding their self worth through being able to play a musical instrument that he had.
The whole cast of children were children with disabilities.
And he was told that he should have professional actors,
Not children with disabilities.
But no,
He believed in the idea of having the children with disabilities coming together and working on the movie.
So it was a beautiful thing to see how when the children got together with music,
With this uniting force in music,
That again,
They were able to bring forth what many people didn't believe they could do.
Kind of like what Ted did with the team,
Right?
The team that was at odds with themselves.
And Ted Lasso says,
I know it's not about winning or losing,
You know.
He doesn't care about winning or losing the game.
And it's obvious that,
You know,
If you're going to do something you really wish to do,
You know,
You're going to do it not about winning and losing,
But because you're doing it for something you really believe in.
The lyrics go on in my song,
Believe you are the light that shines forth day and night.
Believe you make a difference.
Can't you see?
You're stronger than you know.
When you shine forth your soul,
Anything is possible when you believe.
And this brings in the part that I love so much about getting in touch with yourself.
Because when you're in touch with your soul,
You can,
When everyone else says you can't,
You can believe.
You know,
At the same time,
You know,
It's just that energy that's coming from your heart.
There's a Ted Lasso quote,
If you care about someone and you got a little love in your heart,
There ain't nothing you can't get through together.
So this works with so many levels,
Of course,
With children,
With music.
So many wonderful ways that you can learn by working together.
I really believe in the fact that you can be positive.
And the story in Ted Lasso is positive.
And it's more important to be positive when there's a lot of stuff going on.
You know,
A lot of stuff going on in the world that's challenging and negative.
There's a great quote from Ted Lasso that says,
If the internet has taught us anything,
It's that sometimes it's easier to speak our minds anonymously.
And I think that's kind of what is being done in the series is that there's this wonderful message that's done with a sense of humor and done with sincerity at the same time.
You know,
That really does come across.
It comes across in a way that we can relate.
And that takes on the power of vulnerability.
The power of being open and being vulnerable,
As the character Ted Lasso is.
You know,
Even though people will make fun of you and put you down,
It's like,
Well,
Come back with what you believe in and see what makes a difference.
Even if you don't win the game,
You may win in a different way when people,
When the people working together,
Get it and start changing.
I wrote this poem,
I choose to see all the beauty that exceeds the realm of literal possibilities.
I choose to express the blessings I get and understand the rest that life brings many tests with so many lessons and so much to learn.
It's good to be aware of the love that can overcome our fear.
If we can still observe the good that's here on earth and in our hearts be grateful for this gift of existence and our true worth,
Then we can believe the greater good is needed to walk each other home until we reach that place where all of this beauty came from.
Now,
I write poetry messages every day,
Happen every day of my life after meditation for over 50 years now.
But the idea in Ted Lasso is,
Ted Lasso is that,
You know,
You can have a sense of humor and you can see and have people relate to that humor in life in an interesting way.
Especially with the guys that are the toughest guys there,
The toughest guys that are afraid to be vulnerable and how they break that down,
Right?
So let's just take a couple of moments to allow ourselves to believe,
To go to that place inside ourselves,
To just go within,
To that true innocence that a child has,
A child that believes with that beginner's mind that anything is possible.
Let's just breathe this wonderful energy of light in,
This light that shines forth day and night,
Breathing it in and allowing it to shine forth throughout your entire body,
Your mind,
Your throat,
Your creativity,
Your heart.
Is there anything in your heart that other people have been shutting out and telling you they don't believe,
They don't like it,
They think you're crazy to do what you're doing?
Experience that.
Take a moment and go within and feed whatever was there that may have been shut down,
That may have been hurt.
Breathe in that energy,
Breathe in that wonderful light.
Feel that heart smiling again.
Feel that love that needs to be fed,
Fed with the light of love that comes from that wonderful source of unconditional love that brings us the inspiration and the power to believe.
Breathe it in and allow it to be alive in you.
Put that love light there in your heart and let it shine up above you and down below you,
On either side of you,
In front of you,
In back of you so you're protected in that wonderful light of love that is an armor against all negativity.
Allow that positive energy that is there within to come out and shine,
Shine,
Shine,
Spreading it out,
Going into your heart and being oh so very grateful for that healing energy of love in your heart that gets you through all of the hard times,
That gets you to that place where you can live in that power of positive energy and say yes to being able to believe.
Ah,
Doesn't that feel good?
Breathe it in.
Be it.
Become it.
Believe it.
And now slowly come back and allow this energy to fill you up with positive motivation and belief and the power to believe in what you are and how you can live your dreams and live your life being all that you are.
I thank you so much for sharing this time with me.
I believe in you.
