Kirtan is the joyful and meditative chanting of sacred sounds.
This is usually done in a group.
Kirtan literally means to glorify,
Speak about,
Or to repeat.
This refers to the glorification of the Supreme or the chanting of these sacred names.
You may have heard the word Sankirtan.
This refers to coming together of people to perform Kirtan as a group.
And so Sankirtan means the congregational or group Kirtan.
To perform Kirtan,
There is a leader who has received these sacred mantras or transcendental sounds from a spiritual teacher in an ancient and authorized lineage.
This is called Guru Parampara.
The leader of the Kirtan begins by chanting the mantra and the rest of the group listens meditatively.
Then the group responds by chanting the same mantra.
This continues throughout the Kirtan.
It is possible to use any one of a number of suitable mantras such as Hari Bol Nitaikor Om Hari Om or Gopala Govinda Rama Madana Mohana or even the Hare Krishna mantra which is known as the Maha Mantra.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare Kirtan may be soulful and meditative or at other times it may evoke a very great feeling of happiness.
People may sing loudly and dance joyfully.
Kirtan is not a rigid or stiff practice.
It is joyous and relaxed.
You can clap your hands in time with the music,
Play musical instruments,
Sway or stand and dance.
Kirtan transcends all languages,
Nationalities and religious faiths.
It is as universal as the sunrise.
Everyone can enjoy the beauty of the sunrise and be warmed by its golden rays.
Likewise everyone can find spiritual beauty,
Warmth and comfort in the transcendental sound or sacred names.
Everyone from children to elderly likes to sing and dance.
Yoga takes this natural tendency and dovetails it in a most natural,
Easy and enjoyable form of yoga meditation.
The combination of listening and repeating the transcendental sound with simple,
Spontaneous dancing is not only an easy and enjoyable way to practice mantra meditation,
It is also highly effective.
