The Sufi poet Rumi.
Is believed to have said.
Silence is the language of God.
All else is translation.
As beings of pure divine consciousness,
We want to learn from the sages.
We want to engage in spiritual discourse.
We like to read both ancient and modern works of spiritual wisdom.
If we have that inclination toward mysticism.
Faith or some other form of enlightenment.
We tend to take tremendous pleasure in devoting our precious hours to what we believe will elevate our lives.
Raise our vibration,
Or just influence us in some meaningful way.
As a meditation teacher,
I have done this for decades.
But there comes a point when it's time to put into practice what we've learned.
And I have learned that meditation prayer,
Chanting,
Singing,
And reading.
All have tremendous spiritual value.
But to be silent.
Is to allow our hearts to hold sacred all that we've learned while it settles deep into our soul and takes hold.
The learning is the fun part,
Right?
We're in that element.
Immediate sense of,
Well,
That's interesting,
Or.
.
.
This hits home with me.
I should sit with that.
Maybe you've attended conferences,
Talks,
Or.
.
.
Other events that in some way changed your life.
If you haven't,
I would encourage you to do that.
There's nothing like it.
It will sit with you forever.
Maybe you've joined a spiritual meetup group or a book club to discuss works of wisdom.
Maybe you're just drawn to people who share your spiritual beliefs.
Perhaps you make music in some way that expresses your devotion to your belief.
Maybe you write spiritual poetry.
Or you have an interest in specific topics even.
Energy healing,
Near-death experiences,
Or past life regression.
These are all beautiful things.
But when it comes time to simply sit.
Close your eyes.
Feel your breath effortlessly moving throughout your body.
And place your focus inward.
Now you're embarking on a truly sacred journey to connect with whatever you would call that higher consciousness,
Source,
God,
Spirit,
The universe,
Or even just your highest self.
Silence is the one practice that nearly every spiritual tradition encourages.
The Bible says,
Be still and know that I am God.
Thich Nhat Hanh who comes from the Buddhist tradition.
Wrote a book called Silence,
The power of quiet in a world full of noise.
In the Upanishads,
From the Hindu tradition,
Silence is praised as something holy.
They say it's not simply the absence of sound,
But a more profound practice toward enlightenment.
Each time you beautifully expose yourself to a spiritual concept that touches you in some way.
I encourage you to find time to be in silence and contemplate it.
Even if it's only for a few minutes.
If you do that,
It will likely take root more than if you simply read about it or hear it.
That will make an impression on you.
But when you close your eyes and shut out everything external.
And focus on that one thing that was meaningful to you.
It will remain inside you.
This is how you build.
A spiritual storehouse each time you internalize something sacred.
Guided meditations are my specialty,
And they are extremely valuable.
This is probably why you're on InsightTimer.
Many guided meditations hold nuggets of wisdom,
Some of which will resonate deeply with you.
Even the most seasoned meditators find what I would call spiritual diamonds from a profound guided meditation.
But then it's time to sit with what you've learned and allow it to nestle itself inside you and become a part of you.
I have found that I am often blessed with answers to questions I have had when I honor regular silence in my life.
Many spiritual traditions speak of the most important things as existing beyond language.
So I would encourage you to make time each day to simply be silent.
Thank you so much for allowing me to be part of your spiritual journey today.
I'm grateful for you.
