In this talk I describe what I call the paradox at the heart of tinnitus distress: the more you want the sound not to be there, the more your mind sees it as a threat and keeps looking out for it. I explain why telling yourself it is not a threat does not work, and suggest starting small by practicing with everyday unpleasant things you cannot avoid, such as a long line, slow traffic, heat or a cold, while breathing calmly and observing what happens. I also share short phrases for accepting what is happening right now, and how this attitude can be brought to tinnitus. This content is educational and is not a substitute for one to one professional care.
