So welcome to Before Work.
Arrive.
With a clear intention.
The first in my micro threshold practice series.
So these are.
.
.
Relatively short practices designed for the small but important transitions that happen throughout everyday life before work,
A meeting,
A difficult conversation.
After a stressful encounter,
When you're returning home,
Beginning something creative,
Or even preparing for sleep.
Each of these practices in this series is going to combine a simple vocal sound with a visualization.
Movement and a focused intention,
Creating a brief ritual.
For helping you to consciously cross from one state of being or mind into another.
So rather than needing to step away from life for a long meditation,
These practices bring awareness directly into the moments where it can be most useful,
Helping you to pause,
Reset,
Find your direction and meet what comes next.
With a greater sense of clarity and presence.
So,
Before you begin work.
.
.
Or begin to travel to work.
Give yourself these few minutes now to arrive with me.
You don't need to prepare for anything.
Simply notice that you are here.
Feel the ground beneath your feet.
Or the support beneath your body.
Allow your hands to rest for a moment and notice your breathing without trying to change it.
You may already have thoughts about the day ahead,
Things that you need to remember,
Things to finish,
People to speak to,
Places that you might need to be.
We don't need to hold the whole day at once.
For these few minutes now,
Let it remain ahead of you.
So imagine with me now the morning as a landscape covered by a light mist.
Somewhere ahead of you is the path of your day.
Remember,
You don't need to see where the whole path leads,
You only need to see where it begins,
Now.
So we're going to combine a simple movement with one sound,
Ta Loom.
Thalum.
Bring both hands towards the centre of your body somewhere around the lower chest or upper abdomen.
And let them rest there loosely,
One hand over the other,
If that feels comfortable.
Simply allow the hands to gather at your centre.
As though you are momentarily collecting your attention.
From all the places that your mind has already begun to travel.
Ta-Lom is a sound designed around the physical movement that we're about to make together.
It moves through five sounds.
Tuh.
LA LA LA and muh.
Each changes the shape of the mouth and the way that your voice resonates making it.
The Tuh creates a clean threshold.
Tongue makes contact just behind the teeth and then releases.
Physically,
It gives us a distinct point of beginning.
Sounds such as t are also often associated with sharper edges and boundaries.
So here it becomes our first step.
Beginning.
From that point the jaw drops and the mouth opens into AH.
We've crossed the boundary and entered a more open space with this sound.
The law then takes away some of that abruptness.
Rather than another stop,
The sound continues and flows forwards.
As L moves into the O.
Notice how the lips begin to round,
Making the sound.
The wide open space of ah,
Gradually becomes more gathered and directed.
And then finally.
.
.
The lips close into the m.
Sound,
Leaving the vibration of your own voice humming through your face and body.
So rather than giving Talum a fixed meaning,
We're going to experience its movement,
Boundary,
Opening.
Movement,
Gathering and embodiment,
And the hands will perform that same journey as we make the sounds,
Moving from centre into direction.
Now listen once first.
Alone.
Now join me,
Let the sound sit wherever it naturally belongs in your voice.
There is no need to match my pitch,
Make it loud or make it sound beautiful.
As you begin the T,
Keep both hands gathered at the center of your body.
Now this is the instruction for how to make the movement with the sounds.
So as you begin the T sound,
Keep both hands gathered at the center of your body and feel that tiny moment of contact in your tongue as your starting point.
As you open into the R sound from the T,
Allow your hands to separate gently one from the other,
As though you were beginning to part the mist in front of you.
Let the opening of your hands mirror the opening of your mouth with the R sound.
As the sound begins to move through La.
Keep one hand close to your centre while allowing the other,
Perhaps your dominant leading hand,
To begin traveling slowly outwards and forwards.
No need to reach or grasp,
Let it simply move.
As the R rounds towards the O,
Allow that moving hand to continue forwards.
Let the elbow remain soft.
And gradually turn out your hand or palm slightly upwards and forwards as though the hand is discovering a direction through the landscape.
This is your togetherness.
As your lips finally close into the M sound,
The M,
Stop all movement and allow the hand to become completely still.
You can try pointing.
What are you pointing at?
You're pointing at you being aligned and synced.
And in tune with your day.
Feel the vibration.
The mouth has moved from boundary,
Opening in movement towards gathering an embodiment.
The hands have moved from the centre.
Towards a direction.
Let's experience the whole movement together.
Salum.
Shalom.
Notice the silence after the sound and notice the position of your body.
One hand remaining close at your center.
The other points gently towards the path ahead.
Slowly bring your extended hand now back towards your body.
The pointing hand,
Which perhaps should be your leading or dominant hand,
What are we pointing out?
You're pointing out.
Your togetherness,
Your association with the day.
You have your direction in the path ahead,
But the other hand links this path to the heart,
To the center of your being.
So this is aligning the core of your being,
The center of your being,
With your path for the day ahead.
Now ask yourself one simple question.
How do I want to meet this day?
Don't look for a complicated answer.
Steady,
Clear,
Patient,
Curious,
Kind,
Courageous and present.
Let any of these qualities,
You can just choose one,
Let that quality become more important for a moment than everything else that you think you have to accomplish today.
Now return to the landscape.
Imagine the mist ahead beginning to shift.
You don't need the entire landscape to become visible.
Instead,
Imagine the mist parting only enough to reveal the first few steps ahead.
What is the first useful thing that you actually need to do?
Not everything,
Just the first thing.
Perhaps it is an opening,
Something,
Writing something,
Making a call,
Preparing something,
Traveling somewhere or speaking to someone.
Bring both hands back towards your centre one more time.
Feel your chosen quality.
And we will make the sound Talum one last time.
This time allow the movement to happen without thinking about each stage.
At T,
Find your beginning.
Through R,
Open.
Through L,
Begin to move.
Through O,
Find your direction and open.
And with M,
Arrive.
Let the hands follow the same journey,
Centre,
Opening,
Movement,
Direction,
And then finally stillness.
Thalur remain there for a moment.
See the first part of the path and feel the ground beneath you again.
Silently connect your chosen quality with your first action.
Steady as I begin.
Clear as I begin.
Present as I begin,
Or simply use your own words.
Remember.
No need to carry the whole day.
You do not need to see the whole path ahead.
You only need to meet the parts of the path that is already here.
Allow your hand to return gently to your centre.
And take one more breath.
And one final sounding,
Softly this time.
Let the final M sound disappear into silence.
And allow your hands to release.
The path,
Begins here.
And begin.
