You Already Know How To Meditate
by Mikou Onoda
Do you need a quiet room, incense, or perfect conditions to meditate? In this short talk, you’ll discover why meditation is not about creating the ideal environment, but about learning to return to yourself wherever you are. This perspective may change the way you think about meditation and help you recognize moments of mindfulness already present in your daily life.

Many people think meditation requires a special environment.
Beautiful incense.
Soft lighting.
Quite rude.
A peaceful atmosphere.
Someone once asked a meditation master about this.
Should I use Wonderful Incense,
Beautiful Light?
And a special room to meditate.
The master's answer was surprising.
In fact,
He said that depending on those things can become an obstacle.
Because Meditation is not something created by insects.
It is not created by lighting.
It is not created by silence.
Meditation only works under perfect conditions.
Then what happens when life becomes difficult?
Real life is often noisy.
People are busy.
Problems appear.
Emotions arise.
Meditation is not about escaping from those things.
Meditation is learning how to return to yourself in the middle of them.
You can meditate while sitting.
You can meditate while lying down.
You can meditate in a quiet place.
You can even meditate in a noisy place.
The important thing is not where you were.
The important thing is where you can gently return your attention to the present moment.
Some people already know how to do this.
When something stressful happens,
They pause.
They take up with it.
They stop for a moment.
Instead of being carried away by their thoughts,
They return to themselves.
That is already very close to meditation.
Meditation practice simply helps us strengthen this.
Ability.
Again and again,
We learn to return.
Again and again,
We learn to settle the mind.
Perhaps you already know how to meditate.
Perhaps you have been doing it all along.
Thank you for listening.
May you find a moment of stillness today.
