Hi,
My name's Oliver Gohari.
I'm a transformational coach and functional wellness specialist.
One of the commonly asked questions that I get,
One of the most commonly asked questions that I get is,
Does daily meditation,
Does regular meditation make you less productive?
Does it make your ambition and productivity in the world go down?
And I'm going to answer that question today using two perspectives.
The answer is no,
It doesn't.
But it's nuanced and there's more to the story.
So What happens when we meditate regularly is we sit with our mind,
Our cognition and our cognition can also be termed ego,
Egoic mind.
When we sit with ego on a daily basis over a long period of time,
Such as weeks,
Months and even years.
That egoic voice that we all have,
Myself included,
Everybody in the world has it.
That egoic voice becomes less potent and it has less control over you.
Now when we meditate regularly it's not like that egoic voice is going to dissolve and disappear.
One of the things that I often talk about is how,
As a human being,
We are two parts.
We are human,
Ego,
Cognition,
The flesh and bones,
And we are also beings.
Which is the stillness.
The awareness and the presence.
And these two parts of our being.
Coexist,
The human ego and the still awareness,
The presence behind it all.
As a human being,
That's kind of like a package that you can't unsubscribe from.
You come in to this life with that.
Duality with that friction and you exit life with that friction and with that duality That doesn't mean though that we can't make efforts to increase the spiritual non-physical aspect of our being.
And in fact it's a really good thing that we do that through meditation and through other practices.
But primarily for this video I'm talking about meditation.
Most of the world most human beings out of the eight billion of us on planet earth We're conditioned and we naturally gravitate towards the egoic,
Dense,
Cognitive mind side of things.
And that's not really anyone's fault.
It's just the way that our operating system is hardwired.
You could call it evolutionary biology or evolutionary psychology.
But we just naturally come to planet Earth with that wiring to be more egoic,
More material.
So.
.
.
When we begin meditating every day,
Every week.
That egoic strength becomes weaker.
It doesn't disappear but it comes weaker.
The first answer to the question,
Do we lose our productivity?
Well,
No.
Because the egoic voice is always there and it always will be there.
But it's your relationship to it that meditation can heal and drastically improve.
So you'll still go to work and have a job.
But the egoic voice will have less.
Control over you it will have less it will have less.
.
.
Gravitas and control over you.
Which is a really good thing,
Because let's not forget,
The egoic voice generally for the most part.
Negative.
I do it like that just to kind of show you that it's a broad term.
The ego is primitive.
Comparative to others.
Easily offended.
There's always a feeling of not enough.
With the ego.
You never have enough according to the egoic mind.
The ego is easily angered.
The ego doesn't want to sit with anything that's difficult.
So the ego is like this protection mechanism that tries to remove pain,
Suppress pain and just get,
Get,
Get,
Consume,
Consume.
It wants safety.
And that leads us,
As you may well be aware if you're on Insight Timer.
It leads us into trouble.
It leads us into vices,
Addictions,
Suffering The bottom line is suffering,
And this has been talked about by many ancient traditions.
One would be Buddhism,
They called it Dukkha,
Which means perpetual existential suffering.
So it's a good thing to do a daily meditation practice because we reduce the strength of that little primitive child that exists in each and every one of us.
It never goes away.
What I like to say is that you stand over the ego and you just watch it every day.
And it by definition will,
Through doing that,
If you look at it every day through meditation.
It gets in line,
It starts to behave more.
Now the second part to this which is more fun and more expansive and meta beyond,
Beyond the physical body.
Why does meditation not decrease your productivity?
Well,
When we step back into the non-physical aspect of our being rather than living forward in ego.
What happens is we access a part of our being.
Which,
Unbeknownst to us,
Unbeknownst to the ego,
Is.
.
.
Powerful.
It's an infinite field of possibility and it gives you inspiration.
It gives you ideas.
So it's non-physical.
In the best possible way the awareness behind every experience,
The very awareness that can hear my voice right now,
The very awareness that allows you to see my image.
That awareness is a pool of.
Infinite potential.
Coiled up information That's why it's sometimes termed source.
Or God.
Depending on your outlook and philosophy or religion.
So when we do more meditation,
We strengthen the non-physical aspect of our being and we don't become less productive.
In fact,
Our actions are inspired by something very powerful within us.
Not on an egoic level,
Not on a let's get stuff done kind of perspective but on a You could call it a divine level.
All of the information lies in that place within you that is non-physical,
Yet it exists in every given moment.
I hope you enjoyed that explanation and I hope it reassures you to not stop.
