Before we begin the meditation,
A few grounding words about what we are working with today.
The window of tolerance is the range within which our nervous system feels able to cope.
When we are inside this window,
We can think clearly,
Feel present in our bodies and respond to life with some flexibility.
When we move outside of it,
Our system is doing its best to protect us.
Hypoarousal is a state where the nervous system shifts to shut down or collapse.
You might notice feeling numb,
Foggy,
Disconnected,
Heavy or distant from yourself or the world around you.
This is not a failure or something to push against.
It is a protective response that often develops after prolonged stress or overwhelm.
This meditation is an invitation to gently support your nervous system back towards safety and connection.
We are not forcing energy or trying to fix anything.
We are simply offering small cues of presence,
Warmth and orientation,
Allowing your system to move at its own pace as it finds its way back into the window of tolerance.
You are welcome to listen whatever way feels supportive.
Everything offered here is an invitation and optional.
Your body gets to lead.
So let's begin by finding a comfortable position,
Maybe seated,
Standing or lying down,
Whatever feels most supportive right now.
You do not need to close your eyes for this practice.
If it feels safer to keep them open,
Then that is welcome here.
Otherwise,
You're welcome to close your eyes or lower your gaze.
Take a slow breath in through the nose.
And longer breath out through your mouth.
Let the exhale be soft,
Steady and unforced.
If you have felt foggy,
Heavy,
Disconnected or far away.
Know that nothing is wrong with you.
This is your nervous system trying to protect you.
Right now,
We are not trying to fix anything.
We are gently inviting you back into the present moment.
Begin by noticing where you are.
Silently or softly,
Name to yourself.
I am here.
I am in this room.
It is safe enough in this moment.
Notice the date or the time of day.
Notice the temperature of the air on your skin.
Notice that you are supported by the ground and surface beneath you.
If your eyes are closed,
Inviting you to open them.
And just let your eyes slowly scan the space around you.
I invite you to name three things you can see.
In full detail.
Take your time.
Perhaps you notice colour.
Texture.
Shape.
Or light.
Describe each one gently in your mind.
As if you were telling someone about it.
After the third thing,
Pause.
Take a slow,
Deep breath in.
A long breath out.
No.
Bring some awareness into your body.
Without judgment.
Notice your level of energy right now.
On a scale of 0 to 10.
Where Zero feels very shut down or frozen.
And 10 feels activated or overwhelmed.
Where would you place yourself in this moment?
There is no right number.
This is simply information.
Let that number sit in your awareness.
You do not need to change it.
Now we will invite a small gentle increase in energy.
Not rushing.
Not foreseeing,
Simply waking the body a little.
Begin to deepen your breath just slightly.
Inhale through the nose.
Exhale slowly through the mouth,
Longer than the inhale.
And repeat that a few times.
With each exhale,
Feel your body arriving more fully here.
If it feels okay.
An invitation to bring a little more movement into your body.
Perhaps you could press your feet more firmly into the floor or surface beneath you.
Maybe you roll your shoulders back and down.
You might gently stretch your fingers or your hands.
Maybe moving your jaw.
You could even smile.
Just a little.
Not because you need to feel happy.
But because the body often responds to small signals of aliveness.
Notice any subtle changes in sensation.
Warmth.
Tingling.
Weight of your body or contact with the surface beneath you.
Again,
Orient to safety.
You are here.
You are present.
You are supported.
You are safe enough right now.
An invitation to take another look around the room.
Let your eyes land on something pleasant or neutral.
Allow yourself to really see it.
Observing it like it's the first time you've ever seen it.
Now check in again with that scale from 0 to 10.
Has your number shifted at all?
Even by half a point.
Whatever you notice is welcome.
If he feels low still or distant,
That is okay.
We move slowly here.
Bring one hand to your chest if that feels supportive.
And feel the warmth of your palm.
And become aware of the gentle rise and fall beneath it.
As you breathe.
Silently say to yourself I am here now.
I am allowed to take up space.
I am coming back gently.
Stay with your breath for a few more cycles.
In through the nose Hike through the mind.
Notice your feet.
Notice your leg.
Notice the contact points between your body and the surface beneath you.
If you like.
Gently wiggle your toes or your fingers.
Invite a sense of waking without pressure.
Now take a moment to notice something you feel grateful for in this room,
In this space.
It can be very small.
Chair.
A window.
A plant,
The light,
Your breath.
Let that gratitude register in your body.
Before we close,
Orient one last time.
Name silently.
Where you are.
Who you are with,
Or perhaps that you are alone and safe.
That this moment is different from the past.
Take one final deep breath in.
And a long breath out.
In your own time when you feel ready.
Allow your awareness to fully return.
Bringing movement into your body.
However feels comfortable for you.
Lift your head.
Look around again.
You are here.
You are present.
You have returned.
Carry this sense of gentle aliveness with you.
Knowing that you can come back to it.
Anytime.
