Hello,
Friends.
Welcome to The Speech Nook.
Cozy stories,
Sounds,
And songs to boost early language.
My name is Sarah,
And I'm a speech therapist.
Today,
We're reading one of my favorites.
I've read it as a child.
I've read it as a mom to my kids.
And now I am reading it to you.
We're reading The Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie the Pooh written by A.
A.
Milne,
Specifically chapter nine,
In which Piglet is entirely surrounded by water.
Now in this little excerpt of the story,
We're gonna work on that P sound because guess what?
We have some characters in this book that start with P.
So let's get our lips ready today.
We're gonna pop our lips and make that P sound.
Ready?
Now you just want to make it with some air so you can even feel the air popping from your mouth as you hold your lips together and burst the air out.
So we don't want to make a sound when we make our P sound because it's a silent sound.
It's a quiet sound.
Our voice is off because it's just air coming out of our mouth.
Let's try again.
Can you put your hand in front of your lips and feel that air?
Last time.
All right,
So our character names in this story that start with a p sound are piglet and poo.
All right,
Let's begin.
It rained and it rained and it rained.
Piglet told himself that never in all his life,
And he was goodness knows how old,
Three was it or four,
Never had he seen so much rain.
Days and days and days,
If only he thought as he looked out the window,
I had been in Pooh's house or Christopher Robin's house or Rabbit's house when it began to rain,
Then I should have had company all this time.
Time instead of being here alone with nothing to do except wonder when it will stop.
Friends,
If you look out the window.
.
.
What weather do you have outside?
Today I actually have a rainy day and I love rainy days because I love getting all cozy and having it be all dark inside my house and quiet.
What do you like to do on a rainy day?
And he imagined it himself.
With Pooh saying,
Did you ever see such a rain,
Pooh?
And Pooh saying,
Isn't it awful,
Piglet?
And Piglet saying,
I wonder how it is over Christopher Robin's way.
And Pooh saying,
I should think poor old rabbit is about flooded out by this time.
It would have been jolly to talk like this.
And really,
It wasn't much good having anything exciting like floods if you couldn't share them with somebody.
For it was rather exciting the little dry ditches in which Piglet had nosed about so often had become streams,
The little streams across which he had splashed with rivers,
And the river between whose steep banks they had played so happily had sprawled out of its own bed and was taking up so much room everywhere that Piglet was beginning to wonder whether it would be coming into his bed soon.
Feeling.
At first,
When the book started,
Piglet was feeling lonely,
But now his feelings have changed.
I think he might be a little scared.
Let's see.
It's a little anxious,
He said to himself,
To be a very small animal entirely surrounded by water.
And friends,
If you don't know what anxious means,
It means worried.
Sometimes rainy days can make us worried.
I love it when the rain is pouring and even when the thunder is booming.
It is so exciting to me.
Christopher Robin and Pooh could escape by climbing trees,
And Kanga could escape by jumping,
And Rabbit could escape by burrowing,
And Owl could escape by flying,
And Ear could escape by,
By,
Hmm,
Making a loud noise until rescued.
And here am I,
Surrounded by water,
And I can't do anything.
So friends,
We had a lot of movement words in this last section.
We had Kanga jumping,
And we had Poo climbing,
And we had Rabbit burrowing,
And we had Owl flying.
And Eeyore was making a loud noise.
When it's raining,
Like I said,
I like reading.
So we put those two parts of the word together.
We make that ing sound at the end.
You let me know what you like doing.
It could be sleeping,
It could be eating,
And I bet you like playing.
I also like Kanga and Poo climbing trees and jumping.
It went on raining and every day the water got a little higher until now it was nearly up to Piglet's window and still he hadn't done anything.
Then suddenly he remembered a story which Christopher Robin had told him about a man on a desert island who had written something in a bottle and thrown it in the sea.
And Piglet thought if he wrote something in a bottle and threw it in the water,
Perhaps somebody would come and rescue him.
Hmm,
What do you think,
Friends?
Piglet might write that he could put in the bottle.
If you were in danger or if you needed somebody,
What would you say?
There is another sound where we feel the air right outside our lips.
This word is helping.
Can we all make our H sound?
Help!
Help!
Help is a great word to use with friends or family or adults or teachers.
Let's see what Piglet does.
He left the window and began to search his house,
All of it that wasn't underwater.
And at last he found a pencil and a small piece of dry paper and a bottle with a cork to it.
And he wrote on one side of the paper,
Help piglet me and on the other side it's me piglet help help then he put the paper in the bottle and he corked the bottle up as tightly as he could and he leant out of his window as far as he could lean without falling in and he threw the bottle as far as he could throw splash and in a little while it bobbed up again and on the water and he watched it floating slowly away in the distance,
Until his eyes ached with looking,
And sometimes he thought it was the bottle,
And sometimes he thought it was just a ripple on the water which he was following.
And then suddenly he knew he would never see it again and that he had done all that he could do to save himself.
Can we look far,
Far away,
Wherever we are?
How far can you see?
What do you see that's so far away?
There is another one of those action words with the ing at the end.
Looking.
We are looking.
We're looking,
We're looking.
We're looking,
We're looking.
What do we see?
We're looking,
We're looking.
We're looking,
We're looking.
What do you see?
All right,
Here's the end of our part of our chapter.
Here we go.
So now he thought,
Somebody else will have to do something.
And I hope they will do it soon.
Because if they don't,
I shall have to swim,
Which I can't.
So I hope they do it soon.
And then he gave a very long sigh.
Sigh Can we all sigh together?
There is another breathy sound.
Here we go.
Deep breath in.
And let the air out with some sound.
Here we go again.
Breathe in and out.
I wish Poo were here.
It's so much more friendly with two.
Yes it is friends and thank you for being here with me.
We'll end with a little song because whenever we get ready to go out in the rain,
We have to put on some special clothes,
Right?
So this is so helpful to sing a little song so we remember all the steps we need to do to get ready to go outside in the rain.
So here we go.
Let's listen to our song or you can sing along with me.
Get your raincoat on.
Let's go splash in the puddles.
Get your umbrella.
Get your umbrella.
Get your umbrella.
Let's go splash in the puddles.
Get your rain boots on.
Get your rain boots on.
Get your rain boots on.
Let's go splash in the puddles.
Thanks my friends.
Until next time.
