Somewhere in your body,
A muscle is holding.
And it has been holding for hours.
It did not ask you first.
It moved in and it stayed.
Find the hinge of your jaw just in front of your ears.
Not the idea of it,
The actual joint.
Rest your attention there.
This practice is called deliberate holding.
You tighten what is already tight on purpose,
Then let it go more slowly than you took it.
The body lets go better.
After doing on purpose what it was already doing without asking,
We start with the jaw.
Press your teeth together,
A little firmer than they already were.
Hold it.
Three,
Four,
Five.
Now let go and take longer releasing than you took holding,
Not all at once.
Let the hinge open by degrees.
A little.
Than a little more.
Notice what the jaw does at the very end.
That last small drop is the part you could never reach by asking.
Now the shoulders.
Lift them toward your ears.
Higher than the day already lifted them.
Hold there.
And feel where the back of the neck answers.
And down in stages.
Slower than the lift.
Let the shoulder blades find the floor.
Of your back one inch at a time.
Nothing here needs finishing.
Your ribs may move differently now,
Wider at the sides.
It is simply what a muscle does after being asked to work.
The pain that moved in may still be here.
What happened is small.
Your jaw held on purpose and let go slower than it held.
That is where we stop.
