Let everything settle.
The body first.
The shoulders,
The jaw.
The hands resting just where they've landed.
If something needs adjusting.
Adjust it now.
And then let us go.
And when you are ready,
Let your eyes close.
Take a deep breath in,
Long,
Without effort,
And let it leave in its own time.
And on that exhale,
Let the body drop.
A little.
Let something that has been held begin to ease.
And another breath in and out There is nowhere to be right now except right here.
Nothing to figure out and nothing to resolve.
Just this.
I want to invite you to bring to mind a moment,
Any moment,
From any point in your life.
When you felt fully present,
Fully yourself.
And something underneath it was simply there,
Steady.
And clean.
It might be a moment of connection.
Someone knowing you clearly.
Or you knowing someone else the same way.
The shared meal,
The late conversation that went somewhere,
Neither person planned.
It might be a moment of solitude,
Something made or understood or simply witnessed,
A particular quality of light.
The sound of water.
The feeling.
Of being exactly where you were supposed to be.
It might be brief,
A few seconds.
It doesn't need to have lasted long for it to be real.
Let that come back to you now.
Let the body remember what it felt like.
To be in it.
That feeling is the direction.
Not a destination,
A direction.
The thing the drinking was always,
In its clumsy way,
Reaching toward.
The contact,
The presence,
The sense of being in your own life rather than slightly outside it.
Observing.
It was never really about the booze.
The booze was just available at the time.
What it was about,
What it has always been about,
Is this.
The hunger for something real.
The need.
To feel.
No.
Entirely human wants to be fully in your own life rather.
Than managing it from a distance.
That hunger.
Is not a flaw.
It is the most honest thing about you.
And it has been there the whole time.
Through the drinking years,
Through the mornings,
Through the hiding and the isolation and the long,
Slow work of understanding what was actually happening.
Patient.
Waiting.
For the noise to stop.
The noise has stopped.
I want you to spend a few moments here in whatever has opened up.
Not resolving it,
Not planning it,
Just letting it be present.
The hunger finally named the direction.
Finally clear.
The person.
Who has been here the whole time.
Now visible.
You came to this course with a history.
You are leaving it with something more useful than a history and understanding of the terrain.
Clearer sense of what you are building toward.
And what you are dawn carrying.
What comes next is completely yours.
Nobody can hand it to you.
Nobody.
Can walk your path.
Let the breath deepen that.
And let some movement return to your hands and feet.
Gradually and without rush.
Let the room come back at your own pace.
When your eyes open.
Let them open.
To whatever is next.
