The Arthur series.
Bath day.
Arthur is in the garden.
He's chasing a leaf.
The wind blows the leaf very fast.
It tumbles over and over.
Oof,
Says Arthur.
He cantors after the curly leaf and catches it with his tiny white teeth.
Arthur,
Arthur come.
He hears his lady calling him and his curly tail lifts up over his back in delight.
Arthur holds the greeny brown leaf in his mouth and drops towards her.
What have you got you scamp,
She says when she sees him.
Arthur drops the leaf in front of her toes.
His lady picks it up and strokes his furry head,
Smiling.
Oh,
But look at your muddy black paws,
Arthur,
She exclaims.
Oh,
Thinks Arthur.
Oof,
He says quietly.
Thank goodness it's bath day today,
Says his lady.
Oof,
Oof,
He says even more quietly.
His lady scoops him up and takes him to the sink.
She slowly lowers him into the warm bubbly water.
Oof,
Says Arthur.
Do I like baths?
His lady's hands rub him gently all over.
The bubbles make him sneeze.
He feels very wet.
He does not like to feel so wet.
Oof,
He says.
I do not like baths.
His lady sponges his eyes very gently with clean water.
Arthur squeezes them tightly together.
All done,
She says,
And picks up a fluffy blue towel.
Arthur opens his eyes.
Oof,
Oof,
He says.
My blue towel.
He stands very still whilst his lady rubs him briskly.
Good boy,
She says.
She puts him on the floor.
Go on then,
She says,
Laughing.
And Arthur does the most amazing thing.
He starts to twist and to roll and to shake his whole body.
He's moving from the tip of his nose right to the end of his little curly tail.
He looks like a dancing,
Jiggling white mop.
The water spins off and flicks his lady's ankles.
She laughs.
Oof,
Shouts Arthur.
He runs over to the mat in front of the cooker and looks up at his lady.
He sits very still.
Yes,
Arthur,
She says,
Of course.
And she gives him one of his special chew bars.
Arthur snuggles down with his chew tucked between his front paws and falls fast asleep on the warm mat to dream of mud and grassy smells and leaves flying and sailing in the wind.
The end.
