The Arthur Series Poorly Arthur is running.
He's cantering down the hill in his garden.
Ow!
He thinks.
He flops down on the grass and whimpers.
His leg feels strange.
It's not a good thing.
He must tell his lady.
He can see her through the open kitchen door.
She is standing by the cooker and big puffs of steam are around her head.
Oof!
He shouts.
She looks out of the door.
Oh Arthur!
What's wrong?
She says.
Arthur says.
His lady walks towards him.
He's lying very still and very very flat.
He tries to stick his bad leg out but it won't move.
Oh!
Thinks Arthur.
His lady picks him up.
She holds him very gently.
To the vets with you I think,
She says.
Arthur licks her face.
Oof!
He says quietly.
At the vets it's Arthur's turn to go in.
The vets hand gently feels Arthur's leg.
Hmm!
He mumbles.
Arthur looks at the wall.
There's a picture of a dog on the wall.
Bonsai breath relievers,
Says the writing under the picture.
Arthur does not understand the writing but he sees the dog in the picture.
And it's looking straight at him.
He does not like the dog's face.
Grrr!
Arthur grumbles.
He does not like the smell in this room.
Grrr!
He says a bit louder.
And his leg is hurting.
He's hurting lots.
Grrr!
He adds.
What a fierce little growl,
Says the kind vet.
He talks to Arthur's lady.
They talk a long time.
Arthur looks at the bonsai dog again.
Grrr!
He says.
Be a good boy Arthur,
Says his lady.
She strokes his head and then she leaves.
Arthur looks at the vet.
Now,
Now little sir,
Says the vet.
Let's fix that leg shall we?
What now?
Thinks Arthur.
The vet holds him close.
Arthur says.
But then he feels very sleepy.
He gives a little grumble.
And then falls fast asleep.
Arthur,
Arthur!
His lady is calling him.
Is he dreaming?
He opens his eyes.
No,
His lady is here.
Come on,
Let's go home,
She says.
Home,
He thinks.
He says happily.
He jumps up.
Whoops!
He thinks.
His leg feels a bit strange.
But the bad thing feels better.
Keep him on a lead in the garden,
Says the vet.
Arthur looks at his lady.
Give him his medicine every day.
Arthur's lady looks at Arthur.
Thank you,
She says to the vet.
In the car Arthur can see the bag of medicine on the seat next to him.
If he pushes it with his nose it rustles.
He sighs.
I will not eat that,
He thinks.
Oh yes you will,
Says his lady,
Watching him and laughing.
He says.
He's very happy.
And very tired.
He curls up on the soft blanket in the car.
And listens to the car keys tink tinkling as the car from some quietly home.
The end.
