Welcome to Somatic Signal.
I'm Jeremy,
A neurophysiologist.
Transitioning out of work requires a physical boundary,
Not just a mental one.
If you close your laptop,
Or leave your office but your brain keeps working?
Or your thoughts keep rolling there.
Your nervous system remains stuck in that output mode.
This under five minute reset creates a clean biological break between your work state and your evening rest.
Let's transition.
There is no correct posture.
You can sit back in your chair,
Step away from your desk,
Or sit in your car before walking inside.
Clench both fists tightly for three seconds.
Hold the tension.
And snap your hands open,
Stretching your fingers wide.
Shake out your wrists and forearms.
Roll your shoulders back.
Maybe even one more time,
A slow,
Gentle roll.
These fast motor discharges signal to your brain that the active work phase is physically complete.
Now let's go to your eyes.
And keep them open with a soft wide gaze.
You might mentally visualize a heavy wooden door closing behind you.
On the other side of that door.
That's where all your emails,
Your uncompleted tasks.
And tomorrow's responsibilities.
They're all on the other side.
And there's a physical boundary in between you and those items.
You might just see it that sense.
Sensing under your breath.
Sensing into your jaw.
Let me see if there's any ease there.
I'm clenching it just by 2%.
And your work thoughts might still be coming.
You might gently say to yourself internally,
My output for the day is complete.
The remaining work belongs to tomorrow.
You can find your breath.
Just see how it's coming.
Maybe study.
Unhurried.
You might see if you can sense it coming in.
Maybe a true nose.
Down through your throat and to your lungs and your diaphragm.
I'm sensing into the ease and effort that's here without having to do anything.
Your professional bandwidth is coming offline.
Your personal time is activating.
You have officially transitioned.
Out of work.
