When Things Don't Go to Plan Welcome.
This is a storytelling meditation that you can listen to whenever you feel that you worked hard at something,
But you didn't quite get the result that you expected.
This meditation is here to be a kind companion,
To see what can happen next.
Enjoy.
The first section is the opening,
Arriving.
Find a comfortable position.
You don't need to sit in any particular way.
You don't need to hold yourself together.
Just allow your body to arrive where it already is.
Let your eyes close or soften your gaze.
Begin by noticing your breath.
Not changing it,
Not controlling it,
Just noticing it.
And again,
Breathing in and breathing out.
Feel where your body is supported.
The chair,
The floor,
Maybe the bed.
The quiet,
Simple contact between you and what's holding you.
Now,
When things do not go to plan,
Especially when they don't go to plan no matter how hard we try,
It is completely natural to feel depleted,
Worn and disillusioned.
There was a time when everything you tried seemed to give you the spark you needed.
A new project,
Maybe a new relationship,
An unexpected gift or moment of appreciation.
Those moments matter.
They tell a story about you.
They show you what you are capable of.
If you're here now,
Listening to this,
Something may not have gone the way you hoped.
This storytelling meditation is not here to give you answers.
It is here to be your companion while you sit where you are and begin to see and sense what happens next.
This is a story of when things did not go to plan and how to begin to see things differently,
So you can find your way back or maybe your way forward.
Take a slow breath in and a longer breath out.
And let's begin.
Chapter 1.
Remembering the Spark In your imagination,
Picture yourself at another time in your life.
A time when things still had energy.
When a new project could light something up inside you.
When a relationship,
An idea or even an unexpected moment of appreciation could give you a sense of movement again.
Things didn't always feel so full of effort.
You didn't have to carry everything so consciously.
Take a moment to remember that version of you.
Not to compare,
Not to judge,
Just remember.
Remember you have known how to begin before.
You have known how to care,
How to try,
How to build.
All of that still belongs to you,
Even if it feels far away right now.
Chapter 2.
The Long Effort Now,
In your imagination,
Picture yourself walking along a path.
The path represents something you have been working towards.
Something you didn't take lightly.
Something you gave time to,
Energy to,
Hope to.
You didn't just wish for it,
You showed up for it.
Notice the rhythm of your steps,
The steadiness of your effort,
The quiet determination of someone who keeps going,
Even when it's not easy.
And notice this.
You weren't careless about this,
You weren't half-hearted.
You tried.
Chapter 3.
When Things Don't Go To Plan As you continue walking,
You begin to notice the path changing.
It becomes heavier,
Steeper,
Less clear.
And then,
At some point,
It doesn't lead where you thought it would.
Maybe it stops.
Maybe it fades.
Maybe it simply becomes impossible to keep walking in the same way.
Stand here for a moment in your imagination.
Notice what your body feels like.
The tiredness,
The weight,
The quiet disappointment.
When things don't go to plan like this,
Especially after a long effort or long walk,
It's not just sad,
It's exhausting.
It can leave you feeling empty in a quiet,
Tired way.
Questioning yourself,
Questioning the point of trying.
Let yourself acknowledge that,
Without fixing it,
Without reframing it.
Just admit it.
This is hard.
Chapter 4.
Sitting Down Now imagine that instead of forcing yourself to keep going,
You sit down.
Right here.
Not because you failed,
But because you're human.
Feel the ground supporting you.
Feel your breath still moving in your body.
You've been carrying something for a long time.
Expectation?
Responsibility?
Effort?
For a moment,
Imagine setting that load down beside you,
And then one by one,
Placing it carefully into a stream of crystal clear water.
This isn't about getting rid of it.
It's about washing it.
That water feels lukewarm by refreshing.
You use your hands to rinse what you've been carrying.
You watch the weight begin to soften and loosen,
Like pieces of clothing being carefully cleaned after a long journey.
For this has been a long journey.
When you're ready,
You lift them out and lay them in bright sunlight.
Take a moment to look at them now.
They are the same things,
But they don't look the same anymore.
What do you notice?
You don't have to decide anything yet.
You're allowed to rest before you reorient.
Chapter 5.
A companion,
Not an answer.
From here,
Notice something quietly important.
This moment doesn't need a solution.
It needs company.
This is what this meditation is.
Not an answer,
Not a strategy.
Just a companion while you sit with what didn't work,
And who you are now because of it.
Even now,
You're still breathing,
Still here.
That matters more than it sounds.
Chapter 6.
Reorienting.
As you rest,
You begin to notice the landscape around you more clearly.
From this still place,
You can see things you couldn't see while you were pushing forward.
You notice this was not the only path,
And you're also noting something else.
You're not the same person who started this journey.
You've learned things.
About your limits,
About what costs too much,
About what matters more than you thought.
This is the end of something.
It's the end of this version of how you were doing it.
And that's different.
Chapter 7.
Choice.
Imagine standing again.
Not rushing,
Not forcing.
Just standing.
In front of you,
There is no single correct direction.
There is only the next honest step.
Maybe that step is rest.
Maybe it's letting go.
Maybe it's trying again,
But differently.
You don't have to rebuild your whole life today.
You only have to choose what is kind and possible next.
So say quietly,
From here I can choose again.
And let that settle.
Chapter 8.
Beginning again.
Remember,
There was a time when things gave you energy.
When beginnings felt possible.
That capacity is not gone.
It's just tired.
And tired things don't need pressure.
They need time.
They need space.
They need kindness.
Closing.
Returning.
Now begin to feel your body again.
The surface supporting you.
The quiet movement of your breath.
Notice the room around you.
You are not leaving this meditation with a plan.
You are leaving it with something more important.
A mission to not have it all figured out yet.
Take a slow breath in.
And a long breath out.
And when you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
