Set the screen down and let your eyes remember distance.
If it is safe and comfortable,
Place the device beyond your immediate reach,
Not as a rule,
Only as a way of giving this moment a little space.
Look toward the farthest ordinary point you can see.
A wall.
A doorway.
A window.
The end of the room.
Let your focus soften around that point.
Notice that seeing includes more than the small area at the center.
There is a field to the left,
A field to the right,
Space above and below.
Allow light,
Color and shape to reach you without needing to select anything.
Now notice your hands,
They may still hold the shape of typing,
Tapping or gripping.
Let the fingers uncurl,
Feel air between them.
Turn the palms upward or rest them on a surface.
Notice temperature,
Texture,
The quiet weight of each hand.
Your hands do not need to do anything for the next few breaths.
Bring attention to posture,
Not to correct it sharply,
Only to notice what shape the body took while attention was elsewhere.
Perhaps the head moved forward.
Perhaps the shoulders drew inward.
Perhaps the back became still.
Let the spine find a little more room,
Let the shoulders move back,
Down or simply somewhere different.
Allow the head to balance without holding it perfectly.
If the body wants to stretch,
Follow one slow movement,
Reach the arms,
Roll the shoulders,
Turn gently from one side to the other.
Then become still enough to listen.
Notice one sound close to you.
One sound farther away.
And the quiet space in which both sounds appear.
The world is wider than the last thing you were watching.
Let sound show you some of that width.
Now feel the breath in more than one place.
The front of the body moving,
The sides of the ribs making a little space,
The back responding against the chair or clothing.
There is no need for a large breath.
Let breathing remind you that the body has depth.
Notice the contact of your feet with the floor or your body with the surface beneath you.
Feel gravity drawing attention downward.
For a moment,
Let seeing,
Hearing,
Touch and breathing happen together.
You do not need to concentrate on all of them.
Let them form the background of being here.
The impulse to reach for the screen may appear.
You do not have to fight it.
Notice where the impulse is felt.
In the hand,
The chest,
The restlessness of not knowing what comes next.
Ask quietly.
What am I reaching for?
Formation.
Connection.
Relief.
Distraction.
The comfort of familiar movement.
There is no wrong answer.
Knowing the need gives you a choice about how to meet it.
Perhaps you will return to the screen with a clear purpose.
Perhaps you will stand,
Drink water,
Look outside or speak to someone.
Perhaps you will remain here for one more minute.
Choose only one.
Only the next action.
Let it be deliberate and small.
As you move,
Look into the distance once more.
Feel the hands.
Notice the room holding more than one point of attention.
Not leaving the digital world behind.
You are returning to it or stepping away from it as a person who also has a body,
A room and a choice.
