Before we begin,
Find a place where you can be still for the next few minutes.
Somewhere you don't have to go anywhere or be anyone.
Not while you are driving,
Not while you are doing anything else.
Just here.
This is a few minutes for your nervous system to remember something it already knows how to do,
How to calm down.
You don't have to make anything happen,
You only have to let it.
Let's begin.
I would like you to lift one hand out in front of you.
Whichever one feels natural,
And raise it just a little above your eye level.
Arms straight,
Reaching gently out and up.
Now let your hand go soft at the wrist.
The arm stays up,
But the hand itself is loose,
Slim,
Completely relaxed.
Find one small point on the back of your hand to rest your eyes on.
Maybe a knuckle,
Maybe the place a bracelet would sit on your wrist.
Aligning the skin.
Any single spot.
And let your attention gather there,
Soft and steady.
As you keep your eyes on that one spot,
You might begin to notice the arm growing the smallest bit heavy.
That's natural,
Arms are heavier.
There's nothing to do about it,
Just notice it.
Now imagine hanging from your wrist a small empty bucket,
The kind a child plays with it at the beach.
Light,
Plastic,
Weighting almost nothing at all.
And imagine I take a tiny scoop of sand and let it fall into your bucket.
Just a little,
But enough that you can feel it,
A faint,
Gentle weight beginning to pull at your wrist.
And as that small weight settles,
The rest of you settles with it.
Another scoop.
The bucket is a little heavier now.
The arm a little heavier.
And as it grows heavier,
You grow more relaxed.
The two more together.
The heavier the bucket,
The deeper the calm.
A third scoop of ascent.
You may feel your hand beginning to drift ever so slightly downward toward your knee,
Toward your lap.
Don't help it and don't stop it,
Just let it find its own way down,
As slowly as it likes.
And one more scoop.
Heavy now.
Pleasantly deliciously heavy.
So heavy that it's far easier to simply let the hand come all the way down.
Resting it on your lap or the arm of the chair.
And the moment it lands,
You can let that silly little bucket disappear completely.
And let the whole arm go soft,
Warm and still Take a slow breath in.
And as you breathe out,
Let your shoulders drop an inch lower than you thought they could.
In a moment I will count from five down to zero.
With each number let yourself sink twice as deep into this quiet.
There is nothing to hold up anymore.
5.
Softening through the face and the jaw for the breath slowing on its own.
3.
Letting go completely to deeper still,
Heavier,
Calmer.
1,
Almost all the way down.
Zero all the way down now.
You are in a place now that you made.
Not me,
You.
This calm isn't something I gave you.
It's something you allowed yourself to create.
Which means it was always yours and it always will be.
For a moment,
Notice how your body has been holding itself lately.
So much of anxiety isn't a thought,
It's a brace,
A readiness.
A part of you standing guard,
Scanning,
Waiting for the next thing.
Certain it can't put the weight down.
It learned to do that a long time ago,
And it has been doing it faithfully ever since.
It isn't a flaw,
It's protection.
But protection that no longer fits the life you're actually living.
So right now let that part of you hear something simple and true.
There is nothing to solve in this exact moment.
Nothing to brace for.
Nothing being asked of you here.
For this few breaths,
The guardian can rest and nothing bad will happen.
And as it rests,
You might notice your body taking that as permission,
The chest opening a little.
The belly softening.
The grip easing in place you didn't realize you're gripping.
Your nervous system receiving the message it's been waiting for.
You're safe enough right now to come down.
This is what calm actually is,
Not forcing the mind quiet,
Letting the body feel safe enough that the mind quiets on its own.
Now I would like to give you something to carry out of here.
While you are this relaxed,
Gently press your thumb and one finger together,
Lightly,
Just enough to feel it.
And as you hold them there,
Let this exact feeling,
This heaviness,
This safety,
This ease,
Pour into that small point of contact.
Breathe into it.
You are teaching your body a shortcut.
From now on,
When life speeds up and the old bracing returns,
You can press your thumb and finger together just like this.
Take one slow breath.
And a part of you will remember its way back to this place.
A camp you can reach for any time,
Not because I told you to,
But because you built it.
Now let your hand release.
And know this,
Any moment you wish to return to this peace,
You can.
Not perfectly,
Not all at once.
But reliably by simply choosing to,
The door stays open.
In a moment,
I will bring you back up,
Not tired,
But clear.
Rested,
Steadier and more yourself than you have felt all day.
The calm comes with you.
The clarity comes with you.
Whatever you return to,
You will meet it from a stranger place.
I will count from 1 to 3.
1.
Energy returning gently to the body.
The breath deepening.
2.
Becoming aware of the room around you,
The chair beneath you,
The air on your skin.
3.
Eyes open,
Fully present,
Calm and clear,
And ready for the rest of your day.
Welcome back!
