Good morning,
And thank you for joining me today for a few minutes of mindfulness.
This practice is designed to give you a little extra peace in your morning by incorporating mindfulness into what might already be a morning ritual for you,
Drinking your morning coffee or tea.
So whenever you're ready,
I invite you to grab a mug of your favorite warm beverage,
Coffee,
Tea,
Cocoa,
Whatever sounds good to you,
And then take a seat somewhere cozy.
If you need a moment to set up,
Please feel free to pause the meditation.
And whenever you're ready,
We'll begin by taking three deep breaths.
As you inhale,
Feeling your breath inflating your belly,
Expanding your ribs side to side,
And drawing all the way up into your lungs and chest,
And exhaling to let it all out,
Letting go of anything that isn't serving you today.
I'm doing that just a few times.
When you're ready,
I invite you to hold your drink.
If the mug isn't too hot,
Then perhaps you can even wrap both hands around it,
Feeling the warmth of the mug on your skin.
Taking a few breaths here and just noticing how that feels,
Enjoying the warmth and taking in the moment.
For our practice today,
We will be keeping our eyes open,
But I invite you to play around with softening your gaze.
So perhaps that means closing your eyelids slightly,
Maybe letting your periphery vision blur out a little bit,
Just softening.
And with your softened gaze,
I invite you to become aware of the sight of your mug,
Noticing the colors,
The patterns,
The textures,
And the shapes.
Any shadows or reflections,
Just breathing and noticing and trying to keep your focus entirely on the present.
Other thoughts may come in,
In fact they probably will,
And that's totally fine.
Perhaps these are thoughts about the day ahead or memories of things that happened yesterday,
And that's totally normal.
But when you do notice some thoughts coming in,
I invite you to gently return your focus to the present as soon as you notice this happening,
And just let the thoughts float away,
Taking another breath and returning your focus to the present.
Now bringing your awareness to your drink,
Noticing if you can see any reflections in the liquid,
Noticing if there is any steam coming off the top,
Noticing the color and the texture,
Taking a moment to feel gratitude for the pleasure of drinking a morning cup of coffee or tea.
Now perhaps bringing the mug up closer toward your face,
Taking some deep breaths through your nose to really enjoy the smell of your drink.
Taking a few moments here in full awareness of the smell,
The touch sensations,
And the smell of your drink.
And finally,
I invite you to take a taste.
But rather than just gulping down your drink,
I invite you to take a very small sip,
And if the temperature allows,
Let it sit in your mouth longer than you normally would,
Feeling the coffee or tea on your tongue and allowing yourself to fully taste,
Noticing the interplay of flavors,
Noticing the smooth texture and warm temperature,
Holding the drink in your mouth for as long as you'd like,
And swallowing whenever you're ready,
And perhaps doing this a few more times,
Fully enjoying the full experience of your morning coffee or tea,
Allowing yourself to be fully present,
Fully aware of all of your senses.
Feel free to stay here for as long as you like,
Enjoying the silence and the peace and the joy that come from being fully present.
I'll leave you here to enjoy the rest of your coffee or tea,
But I thank you for joining me,
And I hope you have a wonderful day.
