You've probably heard terms like anxious attachment,
Avoidant attachment,
Or secure attachment.
But what are attachment styles actually describing?
At the simplest level,
Attachment is about how we experience closeness,
Connection,
And safety in relationships.
Our attachment system is constantly asking questions like,
Are we okay?
Are you still here?
Can I depend on you?
And when relationships feel uncertain,
Different people develop different ways of responding.
Someone with a more anxious attachment pattern may move towards connection when it feels uncertain.
They may want reassurance,
More contact,
Or confirmation that the relationship is okay.
Someone with a more avoidant attachment pattern may move away from connection when they feel overwhelmed.
They may need distance,
Become very independent,
Or have a harder time staying present with vulnerability.
And someone with a more secure attachment generally has an easier time tolerating both closeness and independence.
But the really important part is this.
Attachment styles are not personality types,
And they're not permanent labels.
Most of us are more complicated and don't fit in one need category.
You might feel secure in one relationship and much more anxious or avoidant in another.
Stress,
Past experiences,
The person you're in relationship with,
And what's happening in your life can all affect which attachment strategies show up.
So I prefer to think of attachment styles as patterns your nervous system has learned for navigating connections.
And patterns can change.
You can learn to recognize when your attachment system has been activated,
Understand what it's asking for,
Communicate more clearly,
And build relationships that feel safer over time.
That process is sometimes called earned security,
Which you can learn more about in my previous video,
Can Your Attachment Style Change?
Building Earned Security.
I'm going to break down anxious,
Avoidant,
And secure attachments individually in a few videos to follow.
And if you want to go much deeper into this,
I also have a full course here on Insight Timer called Attachment Styles,
Understanding Your Relationship Patterns,
Where we explore these patterns in relationships and how we can begin to change them.
Take care,
My friend.
