Sometimes,
When the body releases deeply held tension,
Unexpected emotions,
Images or insights can surface without any obvious conscious explanation.
So,
Are we accessing parts of our own memory that normally remain outside of our awareness,
Or could we be touching something far larger than our personal history?
I don't think that we have the complete answer to that,
But I personally believe that some of what comes to the surface during deep inner work is material that was already within us,
But outside of our conscious awareness.
Emotions,
Memories,
Associations,
Sensations,
Or insights can exist beneath the level of conscious thought.
Sometimes when the body softens and the mind becomes quiet,
Some of that material can begin to emerge into our awareness.
And I don't believe that everything that arises needs or can be understood immediately.
Sometimes something surfaces before we have the words for it and the ability to fully understand it.
But spiritually,
I also believe that there may be layers of consciousness that extend beyond the personality that we identify with every day.
Different traditions have described this in different ways.
The higher self,
Ancestral memory,
Collective consciousness,
Soul memory,
A field of intelligence that connects us to something larger than ourselves.
I can't tell you scientifically that this is what someone is accessing during a deep inner experience,
But I also don't think that we should dismiss on experience simply because we don't yet know how to measure it or explain it from a scientific point of view.
Sometimes an image or emotion may belong to your own unconscious mind.
Sometimes it may be symbolic.
Sometimes it may simply be the mind creating meaning from the sensations that we are experiencing.
And perhaps sometimes we are touching something that sits beyond our ordinary understanding of memory and identity.
For me,
The important thing is not to force an explanation,
But to stay curious,
To have an open mind and to notice what came forward to feel what is it that it has awakened in you and to ask whether it carries meaning for your life at this specific point.
Because maybe inner work is not always about finding something new.
Maybe sometimes it is about becoming conscious of something that has been quietly present.
Beneath the surface of everything all along and maybe occasionally opens the door to a part of ourselves that is far larger than the conscious mind that we normally call me.
