Welcome.
This is a meditation to help you fall asleep faster.
Somatic sleep reset.
For an overactive nervous system.
If you're listening to this right now.
Your body is probably tired.
But your mind is still going.
Maybe thoughts are looping.
Maybe your body feels wired even though you're exhausted.
Or you've been lying here for a while already.
Waiting for sleep that hasn't come yet.
If that's true.
Nothing has gone wrong.
Your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do.
It's staying alert.
Watching.
And waiting for what might still need your attention.
Tonight we're not going to fight that or force calm.
We're going to do something different.
We're going to help your body remember.
But right now,
In this moment,
It is safe enough to rest.
It's not perfectly safe.
Or forever safe.
Just safe enough for tonight.
You can listen lying down,
And I hope that you are.
No need to follow every word.
And you don't need to stay awake for this.
If you drift off.
Just allow yourself.
That's the practice at work.
Before we do anything else.
Let's simply arrive.
Notice the surface beneath your body right now.
Feel the mattress.
The pillow beneath your head.
The weight of any of your covers.
You don't need to sink into them.
No forced relaxation.
Just notice that something outside of you is holding your weight.
You're not floating.
Or alone.
And something solid is underneath you right now.
Allow your body to register that comfort.
Even if you still feel tension.
Or your thoughts are still moving.
You are being held.
When the nervous system is activated at night.
It often loses track of time.
It acts as though what happened today yesterday or even years ago.
Is still happening right now.
So we're going to gently help it update.
You don't need to say anything out loud.
Just let these quiet awarenesses pass through you.
Notice the simplicity of your name.
Where you are.
In the room.
You're hung.
Place you sleep.
Notice that outside this room,
The world has slowed.
That most people near you are already asleep.
And that the day has ended.
Whatever wasn't finished today.
Will be there tomorrow.
It does not need you tonight.
So let your body take that in.
The past is not happening right now.
And tomorrow is not here yet.
This moment is just for this.
For your body.
To rest.
The night asks nothing of you.
Stress,
And alertness.
Organized in very specific places in the body.
And most of us carry them.
Without even realizing it.
So let's gently check in.
Without trying to fix anything.
Bring your attention to your jaw.
Notice if it's clenched.
Or brace.
You don't need to stretch it or force it open.
Just see if it can unhinge.
A tiny bit.
Let your tongue rest heavy in the bottom of your mouth.
And your teeth.
Part just slightly.
If your jaw softens a little more.
Welcome it.
And if it doesn't,
That's okay too.
Your body opens when it feels safe.
Not when it's commanded.
Now notice your shoulders.
See if they're pulled up toward your ears.
And soften them just slightly.
Notice if there's tension.
From doing a day of carrying things.
Either visible or invisible.
No need to drop them dramatically.
Just allow a slight shift.
Imagine something underneath your shoulders.
Holding their weight for you.
As if the bed is doing that work.
Now moving to your hands.
Are your fingers curled?
Are you holding anything?
Let them soften and open.
They don't need to grip anything tonight.
Feel your feet.
We often forget the work they do.
Let them fall open naturally.
Toes pointing outward if that feels right.
Let it be natural.
Your body is beginning to give itself permission.
Many people try to control their breathing when they can't sleep.
Counting or forcing deep breaths.
Trying to make the perfect inhale.
But we're not doing that.
We're simply connecting with our breath.
And noticing.
Bring gentle awareness.
To the way your chest and belly.
Rise and fall.
Not to change or deepen it.
Just to notice what's already happening.
Notice where you feel it most.
In the chest or belly.
Maybe in your throat.
Or barely at all.
All of this is fine.
Now if it feels natural.
Allow your exhale to be just a little longer.
And your inhale.
Without forcing or counting.
Just letting the breath.
Out a little more fully.
Maybe you think of fogging a mirror.
And a quiet sigh.
Take that longer exhale.
How's your vagus nerve?
Something important.
That no threat is present.
And no action is required.
And that it's okay to stand down.
Allow your breath to lead you.
And let this settle in at your own pace.
If your breath wants to stay shallow,
Or uneven.
It's okay.
Just give it time.
Your body is still listening.
And regulation comes at its own pace.
Now we're going to invite something that is different from relaxation.
We're going to invite heaviness.
Not the kind that collapses or gives up.
Just the kind of heaviness that comes when a body finally stops bracing.
Start with your feet.
And imagine them becoming heavy.
Sinking gently into the mattress.
Like they've decided they don't need to be ready to move tonight.
Let the heaviness move slowly.
Up through your ankles and into your calves.
Moving up your calves.
To your knees.
Bye.
No need to rush.
Honor that your legs have carried you all day.
Let them be still.
And heavy.
Now moving up to your hips.
To your lower back.
Allowing it to release toward the surface beneath you.
Feel your belly softening.
No need to suck it in.
Just resting.
Moving up.
Through your ribcage.
Into your chest.
Feeling your arms become heavier.
Let your hands open and still.
Your shoulders settling.
You're nuts.
Releasing the effort.
Of holding your head upright.
And feeling your head heavy on the pillow.
Now to your face.
Allow the muscles around your eyes to soften.
On your forehead to release any furrow it's been holding.
Feeling the jaw soften more.
The cheeks relaxing.
Your whole body.
All the way through the crown of your head.
Heavy now.
You're held.
With no need to do anything.
Or be anywhere.
This is your time to rest.
If thoughts are still moving,
It's okay.
Thoughts at night are not the problem.
The problem is when the body stays alert because of them.
So no need to fight the thoughts.
Just changing our relationship to them.
Is helpful.
Imagine your thoughts like cars.
Passing on a street outside your window.
You can hear them and notice them.
But you don't need to get into any of them.
Or follow where they're going.
You don't need to solve what they're suggesting.
Just let them pass.
If you find yourself in one.
Notice that you followed a thought somewhere.
It's okay and totally normal.
Just bring yourself back to the sound of my voice.
Back to the weight of your body.
And the surface beneath you.
Feel your breath moving slowly.
In and out.
With no need to stop thinking.
Just letting things move through.
If any anxiety is present,
Maybe a hum or a dread.
Or tightness in your chest.
That doesn't want to release.
Let's meet it directly.
Notice where any sensation lives in your body.
There's no need to push it away.
Just note the place you're feeling it.
Maybe your chest or your stomach.
Night time anxiety.
Often intensifies when we fight it.
So instead of fighting it,
Let's befriend it.
And acknowledge it.
Silently.
And gently.
As if speaking to a part of you that's been working very hard.
Acknowledge that that part of you is just trying to keep you safe.
Acknowledge its watchfulness.
And let it know that it can rest now.
That nothing needs to be solved tonight.
And notice if any small part of you softens with that.
Anxiety doesn't need to disappear.
For sleep to come.
It just needs to feel heard and be acknowledged.
Now let's sit down.
What the day left behind.
Not by analyzing it or processing it.
But by acknowledging it.
And placing it somewhere safe until tomorrow.
Think of it like removing a heavy coat.
Everything you've carried today.
Through conversations,
Decisions.
Things left on your to-do list.
Anything said?
Or left unsaid.
Or any worry about tomorrow.
Imagine setting all of it down.
Just place it somewhere outside of the room.
Knowing it will be there in the morning if you need it.
But tonight.
There's no need to wear.
Any of it.
You are allowed to just be a body at rest.
In a bed.
In the quiet.
And with nothing left to carry for tonight.
Before we move into the final settling.
Allow this to land.
There's no need to fall asleep.
During this meditation.
Sleep is not a performance.
Or something you achieve by trying harder.
Your body knows how to sleep.
It was doing it long before you ever thought about it.
And what we're doing right now.
The slowing and settling.
Releasing the day.
Is simply creating.
Better conditions for your body to rest.
Sleep will happen on its own.
With no effort from you.
You're allowed to simply be here.
Heavy.
Warm.
Held and connected.
To your breath.
And safe for tonight.
Now let your awareness Move gently through your body one last time.
With no urgency.
Just a quiet passing through.
Acknowledging the heaviness.
From your feet.
Keep having and still.
Your legs.
No longer needing to carry you anywhere.
Your belly.
Rising and falling.
With breath,
You don't have to manage.
Your chest.
That holds your heart.
Faithfully beating without being asked.
Your shoulders released.
Your arms relaxed.
Hands open.
And face soft.
The space behind your eyes.
Let it go dark.
You are here.
Held.
And safe enough to rest.
Sleep will find you.
However it comes.
Quietly.
Gradually.
And without any effort.
The only thing left to do.
Is nothing at all.
Let my voice fade.
And the beautiful night hold you.
You've done enough today.
And you are enough.
In this beautiful stillness.
So rest now.
Sleep.
And fade.
Namaste.
