Touching Earth Meditation.

This is a beautiful and simple meditation to connect with the Earth.

This meditation is inspired from the Andean tradition and also from yoga.

This meditation is aimed at bringing the different aspects and parts of your being into harmony with the energy of Earth.

Earth goes by many names and many cultures.

We may call Earth Mother Earth.

In the Indian culture,

She may be called Bhumi or Prithvi.

In the Andean tradition,

Earth is known as Pachamama.

And in the Andes,

Pachamama is considered to be a conscious entity that is like our mother who supports and nurtures all life on this planet.

In the Andes,

The Earth or Pachamama is venerated and revered daily in simple and also sometimes in elaborate ways by the Andean people.

The meditation that I'm going to share with you today is a variation of a practice described by Oakley Gordon in his book,

The Andean Cosmovision.

This practice is a tool for grounding and coming back to yourself.

Often in modern life,

We get caught up in our heads,

Thinking,

Conceptualizing rather than touching and experiencing.

And when we're up in this headspace,

This takes our energy upward where it either concentrates and becomes uncomfortably heated or overly focused,

Or it might dissipate,

Which can leave us feeling literally ungrounded.

This meditation practice is meant to help you ground and come back to a feeling of integration.

When we are in connection with the Earth,

However you choose to call this energy,

We feel support and can better navigate whatever is going on in our life.

To begin this practice,

Sit on the ground.

While you can do this practice anywhere in a chair or indoors,

The effect will be more potent if you do this meditation outside and sit on the Earth.

Find a comfortable place to sit.

If you need a blanket underneath you,

That's fine.

And as you take your comfortable seat,

Take a few moments and just notice your energy,

Your physical energy,

Your mental and emotional energy,

And your spiritual energy.

And now put your hands on the Earth wherever it is you're sitting on the grass or on the rock or wherever,

Whatever part of Earth you can touch.

And with intent,

Connect the energy of your body to the energy of the Earth.

And this may feel like it's very natural to do,

Or it may feel that you need to even pretend to do this,

But either way,

There will be an effect.

Make a sincere request or even an intention to bring your energy into harmony with the Earth,

Knowing that the Earth is gracious,

And you and every other being on this planet are,

In essence,

Children of the Earth.

The Earth exists to nourish and support.

That is the Earth's nature.

With intention,

You can consciously connect the various parts of your being,

One at a time with the Earth.

Take a moment to connect your physical body,

Especially the lower half of your body,

The part of your body that touches the Earth,

Allowing these parts of your body to release into the support of the Earth.

Take a couple moments and breathe here,

Noticing what you feel,

Noticing any changes or shifts in your energy.

And now we'll take a moment to connect our emotional body,

Feeling into the area around your heart,

And inviting this area around your heart to connect to the Earth.

Simply allowing any emotions that you experience to drop downward,

Be received by the Earth,

Be grounded by the Earth.

And breathe here for a moment,

Noticing any shift,

Any change,

Any effect.

And now letting your mental body,

The energy of your head and mind,

Connect to the Earth,

Consciously just inviting your mind,

Your head,

That energy of your mind,

Your mental energy to connect to the Earth,

Consciously letting your thoughts drop down into the Earth.

And just noticing how that feels,

Noticing any change,

Any shift,

Any effect.

And take a moment here and breathe.

Take a deep breath in,

A deep breath out,

And just be.

Allowing yourself to have the opportunity to consciously connect and experience the energy of the Earth,

Balancing with the energy of your physical body,

Your mental body,

And your emotional body.

Invite yourself to feel connected and part of the bigger energy that includes you and the Earth.

Invite yourself to soften and breathe here.

You can stay here as long as you like.

And when you're finished,

Consciously and sincerely offer gratitude to the Earth,

To the Mother Earth,

To Pachamama,

To whatever you choose to call the Earth energy.

Thank the Earth for supporting you.
