Welcome.
This practice is an invitation to meet your inner critic.
With a little more space.
Curiosity and compassion.
And before we get into this practice,
Please know.
There is nothing you need to fix.
There are no right or wrong ways to experience this meditation.
You may receive words,
Symbols,
Images,
Colours,
Feelings,
Sensations,
Or just a sense of having an inner knowing.
And you may notice very little at all.
Let's trust your experience.
Seeing whatever arises as information.
And knowing that nothing needs to be forced into meaning here now.
We are just remaining open.
And throughout this practice,
Know that you remain in choice.
You can open your eyes,
Move your body.
Pause or stop listening at any time.
And if anything feels too intense.
Reconnect with the support beneath you and your breath.
When you are ready.
I invite you to find a comfortable position.
You may be sat.
Or maybe lay down.
But wherever you are.
Find a space of comfort where you can feel supported.
Let your hands settle in comfort and ease.
And if it feels comfortable.
I invite you now to gently close your eyes.
Or you may soften your gaze towards the steady point ahead of you if that feels safer.
Trust in yourself.
Noticing now where your body is being held.
The chair will surface beneath you the floor beneath your feet.
Or the support behind your back.
Begin taking a slow breath now in through the nose.
Releasing it gently through the mouth.
Again breathing in.
And breathing out.
Perhaps allowing the exhale to be slightly longer.
One more time.
Breathing in.
And slowly beginning to let that breath go.
Following a rhythm of in and out that works for you and your body today.
Now allow the breath to return to a natural rhythm.
Know that the breath here is your guide inwards now.
Each breath taking you deeper and deeper into your own inner world.
Allowing this breath.
To gather your attention that little bit more back towards yourself.
And away from what has happened today or what is still waiting to unfold.
Breathe.
Feeling your body safe and relaxed.
Feeling your mind begin to quieten now.
Just as you breathe.
Connecting more deeply to your inner world.
When you feel ready.
I invite you to imagine that you are entering a private recording studio.
You may see this clearly.
You may sense its atmosphere and energy.
Or simply just imagine that it is there.
In front of you.
Is a producer's station.
A comfortable chair and a mixing console filled with dials,
Buttons and sliding controls.
Perhaps small light glows across the equipment.
Beyond,
You can see there is a strong glass partition.
And the recording booth behind it.
Inside is a microphone,
Ready on its stand.
See this private recording studio now in any way that makes sense to you.
And before going any further,
Let's make this space feel right for you.
Feel free to change the lighting,
The temperature,
The decoration of this space.
Perhaps you add a blanket.
Some candlelight.
Or anything else that helps you feel steady,
Calm and safe in this space.
But when you are ready.
See yourself settling in to the producer's chair.
Notice how you can adjust the distance from the glass.
And that directly beneath your hand is a volume control dial.
From here.
You can see the booth without being inside of it.
The glass lets you witness what happens.
But allows you two to remain connected.
To your body and the present moment.
For this practice,
You are not the voice in the booth.
But instead you are the one who can hear it and notice it.
You are the observer.
Breathe.
And if it feels right for you now.
We are going to invite the part of you that carries the energy of the inner critic to enter the recording booth.
There is no need for you to make the inner critic appear now.
Let's just leave the invitation open and notice what comes.
The inner critic may arrive as a person.
A shadow,
A shape,
A colour,
A voice,
An energy or something else.
But if no clear image appears,
That's okay.
We can remain curious about the sense of your inner critic being here.
But in any way that makes sense to you now.
See your inner critic move toward the microphone and take their place behind it.
As you witness this.
I invite you to notice some things about them.
Noticing their posture.
The way that they move.
Noticing that energy.
Does their energy feel confident?
Watchful.
Alert.
Tired,
Urgent,
Frantic or perhaps something else?
Just noticing that now.
Seeing the inner critic begin to speak into the microphone.
And as they speak.
You may recognize their familiar sound.
Shoulds,
Musts,
Comparisons or predictions of what could go wrong.
You don't need to follow every word.
Agree with your inner critic.
Argue or defend yourself.
If the voice of your inner critic is feeling too loud,
Remember you have the dial.
With a volume.
Until you can remain present.
Take a breath and begin observing your inner critic with curiosity.
Rather than criticism.
You What does your inner critic look like?
How do you sense their presence?
How does your inner critic move?
If you're in a critic's energy,
We're a colour.
What colour might that be?
If you're in a critic,
We're ashamed.
What shape might it take?
If your inner critic has a temperature.
Would it feel warm?
Cool,
Icy,
Burning or something else.
And as you observe this in a critic part.
Do you feel that they have a name?
What name seems to fit.
Bring some attention back to your physical body.
As you observe your inner critic.
What is happening inside of you.
Perhaps you're noticing tightness or tension.
Heat or coolness,
Numbness or activation.
Maybe you feel an urge to move away.
Maybe you identify an emotion within you.
Maybe sadness,
Irritation,
Fear.
Or perhaps your body is currently giving no obvious response.
What is here now?
And just acknowledging what is here now.
And you might like to make a little room around whatever is here with your breath.
Breathing into the parts of the body,
Your attention is drawn to as we observe your inner critic.
Remember that you are still in your producer's chair.
Your body is supported and the glass remains between you and the inner critic.
And that you have the volume control beneath your hand.
If it feels comfortable enough.
Allow the inner critic now to notice your presence.
Perhaps you see them look towards you and notice that they stop speaking.
Once you have the attention of your inner critic,
From the safety of your own space.
Ask them.
Would it be okay if I spoke with you for a little while?
Notice whatever response comes.
This might be a word,
An image,
A feeling,
A sensation or there may be no clear response.
Sense into the answer.
If it feels like no,
You do not need to push through now.
You can simply acknowledge your inner critic and remain quietly present.
If you sense that your inner critic is willing to speak with you.
You might like to say in your mind.
Thank you,
Inacritic,
For allowing me.
To connect with you now.
I am not here to get rid of you.
I would like to understand you a little better.
Notice how you are speaking with one part of you,
Not all of you.
For you remain in your seat,
Witnessing,
Choosing,
Directing.
Let's offer the inner critic a few questions.
You do not need an answer to every single one.
These answers don't need to be clear or direct.
Let's welcome whatever comes with curiosity and openness.
Let's ask the inner critic now.
How have you been trying to help me?
What do you believe your job or role is?
Is there a time?
Or an experience from my past that would help me to understand why you began working in this way.
What are you afraid might happen if you stopped doing this job?
Who or what taught you that criticism?
Pressure and being harsh was the best way to keep me safe.
Taking a deep breath here,
There's no need to search for a particular memory or answer.
Just receiving whatever the inner critic is able to offer at this time.
Noticing whether what you have received shifts your understanding even slightly of this part of you.
Beneath the harsh words and criticism of the inner critic.
Perhaps there is a fear or an attempt to prevent you from feeling hurt,
Pain or disappointment.
How has the inner critic been trying to protect you?
When you are ready,
Let's ask her.
What have you been trying to protect me from?
What would help you to feel a little safer?
What might you need from me in the moments when you show up?
Listening here for anything useful,
Any insight that may support you in relating to your inner critic part in a different way.
And now you might like to place a hand on your heart space.
Look at your inner critic and say.
Thank you for connecting with me today.
I can see that you've been working hard for me.
I understand that you are trying to protect me.
And I appreciate your concern,
But I also need us to find a way of communicating and relating that does not harm,
Hurt or overwhelm me.
I know you don't mean to,
But sometimes your words are harsh,
Punishing,
Sometimes even humiliating.
And so I'm ready for those.
To have a more collaborative and compassionate relationship.
You I am Hannah.
I hear you.
I feel you.
I see you.
And I want you to know I can listen to your concerns from now on without allowing them to define who I am.
Looking down towards the producer's station once again and noticing the controls beneath your hands.
Perhaps there is a dial for volume.
Another fatone.
And another for how often the iniquity can interrupt you.
Choose a setting now for each.
That allows you to hear useful information without being flooded by the inner critic.
What is a comfortable volume?
Town.
And the frequency in which the anacritic can connect.
Maybe her world can change.
From a voice that judges.
To one that softly suggests.
Maybe from an authority.
Tuber Nut Fries.
From the person running the studio.
To one part of your larger production.
Adjust the controls now in whatever way feels supportive for you today.
When you are ready.
Tuning into your body and sensing how it is feeling now.
Glancing to your inner critic in the recording booth.
Let them know that this conversation can end for now.
Thank them for what they have shared.
And see them receive your gratitude and attention.
See your inner critic feeling calmer and more at peace than when they first entered the recording booth.
You See the inner critic step away from the microphone.
Leave the booth.
And let the image settle in a way that feels right and comfortable for you.
Now allowing the studio image to fade gently from your awareness.
Return to your breath.
Noticing the gentle rhythm of your inhale and your exhale.
Feeling the surface beneath you once again.
Becoming aware of the room you are in,
Listening for the sounds around you.
Taking in a deeper breath now.
And slowly letting that breath go.
You may begin to move your fingers and toes,
Roll your shoulders or gently stretch.
And before opening your eyes and returning to your day.
Remember.
The inner critic is a part of your inner world,
But she is not the whole of you.
You are also the one who can notice and witness her.
Adjust the volume,
Set a boundary and choose how you respond.
When you feel ready.
Gently open your eyes or lift your gaze.
Taking your time.
You may wish to write down anything you noticed.
Or simply offer yourself a few quiet moments before returning to your day.
And I'd even invite you to thank yourself for meeting yourself here today.
And over the coming days.
Perhaps gently noticing.
If and how the relationship you have with your inner critic has shifted.
Be gentle with yourself.
And feel free to return to this practice at any time you may need to.
Blessings to you,
Lovely soul.
