There is a place within you that has never been lost.
It has never been given away.
It has never been diminished by another's words.
Another's needs,
Nor another's choices.
It exists beneath every role one has ever inhabited.
Beneath every relationship.
Identity,
And story.
This meditation is an invitation to return there.
Allow your body to settle wherever it is resting.
And take one slow,
Deliberate breath in through the nose.
Holding gently at the top,
Just for a moment,
As though pausing at a threshold.
And releasing completely through your mouth.
Again,
Breathing in… Pausing.
And breathing out a long,
Full,
Complete release.
One more breath,
Breathing in,
Receiving this moment as an act of self-care.
And releasing out,
Releasing the accumulated weight of everything that does not belong to you.
Let your face soften completely.
Along with your jaw and your hands.
Simply arrive.
So many of us have learned over the course of a lifetime.
To navigate the world through others.
To sense what is needed.
Wanted and what must be managed or soothed.
Or held.
Orient ourselves.
Primarily by the emotional weather of those around us.
This is not a flaw.
It is,
In many cases,
A form of extraordinary intelligence.
A deep sensitivity that developed for very real reasons.
At very real times.
And yet,
Over time,
This outward orientation can become so habitual.
That one loses the felt sense of one's own center.
One begins to mistake the emotional currents of others for one's own internal experience.
The boundary between self and other becomes unclear.
This is understood as a displacement.
Of awareness.
Outward from its true home.
The path of self-sovereignty.
Is not a path of hardening.
Or of closing.
Or pushing others away.
It is the path of returning.
Returning awareness to its source.
Returning the self to its own ground.
Bringing awareness to your breath.
Simply observe it for a moment,
Its natural rhythm and depth.
And now with each inhale,
Allow your breath to serve as a gathering.
As though your breath itself is collecting scattered awareness.
From all of the places it has traveled.
All of the people it has orbited.
And drawing it gently back to center.
As you breathe in,
You are gathering.
As you breathe out,
You are settling down.
As you inhale,
You are returning.
As you exhale,
You are arriving.
With each breath cycle,
Feel the awareness becoming slightly more interior.
Simply more one's own.
There is no effort required here.
Awareness naturally returns to its source when given permission.
Continue breathing in this way for several cycles of your own.
Now bring awareness to your body.
And then gently extend this awareness just beyond your body.
The physical body exists within a broader field of subtle energy.
This field extends around the body in all directions.
Before and behind,
Left and right,
Above and below.
Most people in their daily lives have never been invited to consciously feel this field.
Simply be with the possibility of it now.
Allow awareness to expand gently outward.
Sensing the space in front of the body.
The space behind.
The space to either side.
Notice.
In this field,
One has edges.
A boundary,
Not a wall,
But a membrane.
Permeable,
Responsive and alive.
Bring awareness now to where one's own field ends.
Notice beyond this edge,
There is another.
There's the world.
There are other people,
Energies,
And needs.
And right here,
At this edge,
There is a choice.
A choice that can be made consciously,
Breath by breath.
What is invited in.
What is held at the edge?
And what is released.
Breathe with this awareness for a moment.
Feeling the edges of your own field as real,
As present,
As yours.
Now draw awareness inward once more.
Moving through the field.
Through the skin of the body into the interior.
Traveling inward as though descending a staircase into a room at the very center of yourself.
This room exists in every being.
It has always been here.
It is the place in consciousness that has never been shaped by another's expectations.
Never performed,
Appeased,
Or contracted in order to be safe.
Some may find this place immediately.
A warmth,
A stillness,
A sense of recognition.
Others may find that the mind begins to offer reasons why this place does not exist.
Or cannot be trusted.
Or must first be earned.
If this happens,
Simply notice the thought.
And continue descending anyway.
Arrive here now.
In this still interior room of the self.
Notice what it feels like to be here.
There may be a quality of relief.
Recognition.
Rest.
One does not need to do anything here.
This is the ground of sovereignty,
Not as a concept,
But as a felt experience.
One exists here fully,
Without reference to anything outside.
Breathe here for several moments on your own.
Remaining in this still interior place.
Allow these questions to arise,
One at a time,
With great gentleness.
There is no urgency in these questions.
They're not an examination.
But an invitation to look clearly with compassion.
Of what has been carried and what is ready to be set down.
The first question.
Where in one's life has the emotional experience of another been treated as more real,
More valid,
Or more important than one's own?
The second question.
What would it feel like not to think but to feel?
To meet one's own needs with the same care and attention one offers to others.
And the last question.
What does sovereignty feel like here in your body?
In this still room at the center of the self.
Allow whatever has arisen to simply rest without judgment.
There is no right answer.
There's only one's own truth.
Which has always been present and is simply being made conscious.
Gently now begin to deepen your breath.
Breathing all the way into the belly.
Filling completely.
And releasing slowly and fully.
As you prepare to return to the world.
To the relationships,
Responsibilities,
Ordinary movements of the day.
Carry with you this felt sense of your own center.
Not as a fortress,
Nor a withdrawal.
But as a home base.
A place one can always return to.
Breath by breath,
Moment by moment.
This is sovereignty.
It does not require the world to be different.
Nor require others to change.
It only requires the willingness to come home to oneself.
Again and again,
As many times as necessary,
Without shame.
Bring your palms together at the heart.
If this feels aligned.
And offer yourself this acknowledgement.
My center is real.
My experience is valid.
Myself is sovereign.
I am always already home.
When you are ready,
Allow awareness to return slowly to the room.
To your body.
To the day.
Take your time.
There is no rush.
Yourself,
This whole sovereign,
Sacred being.
Has always known the way home.
Namaste.
