Spend a peaceful day at the Haven Shop with Layla.
It's magical feline familiar.
As she quietly tends to patrons,
Woodland friends,
And the enchanted creatures who call the shop home.
From gentle acts of magic to a restful afternoon among the trees,
Follow Layla through her rounds until she returns home to curl up beside the fire and drift into dreamy sleep.
The Haven Shop is a fantasy bedtime story series that will reconnect you with your inner magic.
As you dwell in the sacred space between waking and sleep.
My name is Andrea.
And I am deeply honored to be part of your sacred bedtime ritual.
Welcome back to the Haven Shop.
Jen and I have another cozy story to share with you.
So settle under your blankets and get comfortable.
Let your body grow heavy.
Take a slow,
Easy breath,
And allow the busyness of the day to begin slipping away.
There is nowhere else you need to be right now.
And nothing more you need to do.
Tonight's story carries a gentle reminder that caring for others doesn't always require grand gestures.
Sometimes,
A quiet presence,
A small act of kindness,
Or a perfectly timed nudge is enough to make someone's day a little lighter.
And when your own day is finished,
You deserve that same sense of comfort and care.
From here on.
The only thing you need to do is relax.
And enjoy tonight's story.
If you were to spend a day at the Haven shop,
You might notice Layla.
She is difficult to miss.
Though she rarely tries to draw attention to herself.
Perhaps you would find her stretched across the warm wooden counter in a patch of afternoon sunlight.
Or you might catch sight of her.
Perched on the sill of the large bay window.
Watching the world beyond the glass,
With the patient curiosity only a cat can possess.
At first glance,
Layla might appear to be doing very little.
But appearances can be deceiving.
Layla takes her position as the Haven Shop's feline familiar quite seriously.
She knows every corner of the shop.
She knows which floorboards creak beneath a hurried footstep,
And which ones are quiet.
She knows which shelves hold the calming teas.
Which drawers contain the most powerful charms?
And which rooms tend to fill with the softest conversations.
She knows the gardens,
Too.
She knows where the morning sun first touches the flowerbeds.
Where the little stream runs between the stones.
And which places beneath the trees are especially peaceful.
Most importantly,
Layla knows the people who come through the shop's door.
She can feel what they carry with them.
A little worry.
A heart that feels heavy.
The restless energy.
Of a mind that has been thinking for far too long.
Sometimes there is excitement.
Curiosity.
Or a quiet longing for something the visitor cannot quite name.
Layla notices it all,
And she has a particular gift for knowing when someone needs a little guidance.
A nudge in one direction.
A quiet moment of companionship.
Or a soft purr.
Sometimes,
She believes.
All that is needed is a cat crossing the right path.
At exactly the right moment.
And so,
While the people of the Haven Shop go about their day,
Layla makes her rounds.
No one has officially given her this responsibility.
There is no schedule or list of duties pinned to the wall.
Layla needs none of that.
She knows when she is needed.
And on this particular day.
As the sunlight begins to warm the shop and the first visitors wander through the door.
Layla lifts her head from her sunny resting place.
Her ears turn forward.
Something has caught her attention.
Her day is about to begin.
The first person Layla notices is a woman who pauses just inside the front door.
She is new here.
And has the tentative expression of someone who isn't quite sure what she's looking for.
Her eyes travel slowly over the shelves and displays,
Taking in the little bottles of herbs,
The crystals nestled in their wooden trays.
The Candles and Charms.
And the shelves of books.
Gathered from all sorts of places.
She takes a few steps forward.
Then stops again.
Layla watches from her place near the counter.
She can sense the woman's uncertainty.
Along with the restless energy that has followed her through the door.
There is a weariness beneath it too.
The kind that comes from carrying too much for too long,
And not quite knowing what might help.
Layla rises,
Stretches each front paw in turn,
And steps down from the counter.
She walks toward the woman at an unhurried pace.
When she reaches her,
She crosses directly in front of her ankles,
Tail held high.
The woman pauses and smiles down at her.
Well,
Hello there,
She says.
Leila looks up at her for a moment.
Then turns and walks away.
Taking a few steps toward a shelf near the back of the room.
She glances over her shoulder,
And the woman follows.
Until she finds herself standing beside a small wooden display,
Filled with things meant to bring a little peace to a busy mind.
There are packets of calming tea.
Small Lavender Satchets.
Smooth stones warmed by the afternoon light,
And a collection of little jars filled with fragrant herbs.
The woman picks up a small pouch of lavender.
She holds it in both hands and closes her eyes for a moment.
Her shoulders relax.
Layla sits beside her.
The woman opens her eyes and looks down at the cat.
I think you knew I needed this,
" she says warmly.
Perhaps she did.
There are many ways to help someone find what they need.
Sometimes it takes a conversation.
Sometimes it takes a book or a cup of tea in a quiet room.
And other times at the Haven Shop.
It takes a magical cat who knows exactly where to lead you.
Layla watches as the woman carries her lavender pouch to the counter.
A small smile now resting on her face.
Satisfied,
Layla turns away.
There are still other corners of the shop to check.
She has only made it a few steps toward the next room when she pauses.
Her ears turn toward the quiet hallway,
And for a moment,
She stands perfectly still,
Listening.
There is someone in the healing room.
And Layla can feel the nervous energy gathering there.
The woman inside has never experienced an energy healing before.
She sits quietly,
Her hands folded neatly in her lap.
Looking around the peaceful room while she waits for Aurora.
She had been curious when she made the appointment,
But now that she's actually here,
She isn't quite sure what to expect.
Her thoughts move quickly.
Wondering whether she will know what to do.
If she'll be able to relax.
And whether anything will actually happen.
Layla slips quietly into the room.
The woman looks down when she feels the soft brush of fur against her legs.
Layla circles once around her chair.
Then brushes against her again.
Before settling at her feet.
And she looks up at the woman with calm,
Golden-green eyes.
A warm smile appears on the woman's face as she reaches down to stroke the cat's head.
Layla leans into her hand.
The room is quiet.
Except for the ticking clock.
And the faint sounds of the haven shop beyond the door.
Layla begins to purr.
The.
.
.
Steady sound.
Seems to settle into the room around them.
The woman's breathing gradually slows.
And the tension that had gathered around her.
Begins to ease.
She runs her fingers gently through Layla's fur.
And for the first time since arriving,
She feels as though she might be able to let herself simply rest.
A few moments later,
Aurora steps inside.
She takes in the scene and smiles.
Well,
It seems you've already received a warm welcome.
And the conversation begins to flow effortlessly.
Leila remains for just a little while longer,
Until the woman's breathing has become slow and easy.
She rises,
Stretches gracefully,
And slips away unnoticed.
Layla continues down the hallway.
Following the quiet currents of energy that move through the Havenshaw.
She pauses when she senses another visitor nearby.
And for a moment,
Her whiskers twitch with curiosity.
A man has stopped near one of the displays.
Looking over a collection of charms and curiosities with a polite but guarded expression.
Layla approaches to investigate.
She takes a few steps toward him,
And he notices her.
His shoulders tighten.
And he takes a small step backward.
Layla stops and watches him for a moment.
She senses that cats are not quite his favorite companions.
His slight hesitation tells her.
That her usual approach would not be particularly helpful.
She is humble enough to know that her magic isn't always the answer.
Sometimes.
The kindest thing she can do.
Is recognized when someone needs a different kind of help than she can offer.
She turns and walks away.
The man watches her disappear around the corner.
Perhaps relieved that she has decided to leave him alone.
Layla makes her way toward the back of the shop.
Where she finds Rex,
The white raven.
Perched near the window.
Layla gives him a purposeful look,
Then turns and walks a few steps before checking to make sure he's following.
Rex understands.
And a moment later the sound of wings catches the man's attention.
Rex swoops into the room and makes an enthusiastic attempt to land on the very display.
The man has been examining.
His landing is less graceful than he had intended.
He skids across the top.
Sending a small collection of amulets scattering onto the floor.
Then finally manages to steady himself,
With his wings held out wide.
The man looks up,
Surprised,
Delight warming his face.
Whatever hesitation he had felt disappears completely.
As he watches Rex straighten himself and proudly survey the little mess he has made.
The white raven hops along the display,
Inspecting the charms with great interest.
And the man soon joins him.
Clearly amused by his unexpected companion.
Layla leaves Rex to his new friend and continues toward the potions room.
At the back of the shop.
The door is slightly ajar today.
And a warm ribbon of fragrance drifts into the hallway,
Carrying the scents of dried herbs and flowers.
She slips inside.
The potions room is one of Layla's favorite places to explore.
Partly because it smells absolutely fascinating.
There are so many aromas,
Layered together.
That she can spend an entire afternoon investigating them,
One at a time.
Rose petals.
Chamomile Cedar and dozens of other herbs.
Fill the little room.
With a fragrance that changes with every step she takes.
There are other things to enjoy too.
Bubbles rise gently from the cauldron,
Popping softly into the air.
Bundles of dried flowers hang from the ceiling,
Perfectly within reach of a curious cat.
Layla gives one a playful swat as she passes.
Watching it sway back and forth.
On the table,
A wooden spoon rests beside a bowl of herbs.
She reaches out a paw and bats it gently.
Sending it spinning across the tabletop.
And she remembers,
She is on important business.
Layla leaps gracefully onto the old wooden table and begins her inspection.
Its surface is crowded with jars,
Bowls,
Bundles of herbs,
And small bottles filled with liquids in every shade imaginable.
She moves between them with the careful confidence of a cat.
Who has made this journey many times before.
Pausing to sniff one jar.
And then another.
A bundle of lavender catches her attention.
And she leans closer to investigate,
Before deciding it isn't what she came for.
She moves on to a little dish of dried rose petals.
Gives one a tentative paw.
And watches as it flutters across the table.
She follows it with her eyes for a moment,
Clearly tempted to send another petal flying.
But there is work to be done.
At last,
She stops beside a shallow wooden bowl.
Inside,
There are several delicate dried blossoms,
Their petals soft and pale against the dark wood.
Layla lowers her head and studies them carefully.
One seems to call to her more than the others.
She takes the flower gently between her teeth,
Knowing exactly where it needs to go.
She hops down from the table and pads toward the door.
Just before she slips outside.
She pauses and glances back at the dangling bundles of herbs.
Perhaps she'll come back later.
For now.
There is somewhere else she needs to be.
Layla makes her way back through the shop and into the common room.
Two patrons are just gathering their steaming cups and heading toward the back door.
One of them opens it,
And Layla slips through alongside them.
The little dried flower,
Still held delicately between her teeth.
The back door opens onto the Haven Shop's garden.
Where the bistro tables are tucked among the flowers and trees.
The afternoon has settled warmly over the grounds.
And the gentle sounds of conversation drift through the air.
As visitors linger over cups of tea.
Layla follows the familiar path,
Slinking between chairs.
Toward two women seated at a large round table in the shade.
A scattering of tarot cards is spread across the table between them.
One has just turned over a card,
And both women are studying the image.
With quiet curiosity.
Layla slows as she approaches.
She doesn't know exactly what the card means.
But she can feel the energy around the lady's shifts.
As they consider its message.
The woman who drew the card.
Runs her finger lightly along its edge,
Looking thoughtful.
While her companion leans closer to examine the image.
The card indicates a sign from nature is heading their way.
And when it arrives,
They should be sure to honor its message.
They both glance toward the garden,
Wondering what sort of sign might appear.
Layla knows her cue.
She walks toward them.
Then gathers herself.
And springs lightly onto the tabletop.
Landing with effortless grace.
The two women look up in surprise as the cat carefully steps between their scattered cards,
The little flower still tucked neatly between her teeth.
M She drops it.
The flower lands beside the tarot card.
The ladies look from the flower,
To the card,
Then back to Layla.
Eyes widening as the realization begins to settle in.
Layla is satisfied with her contribution to the reading.
She gives the flower one last glance,
Then strolls across the table,
Before hopping lightly back to the ground.
Behind her.
The Awestruck Women Examine the Tiny Blossom that has appeared at exactly the right moment.
Layla leaves the bistro behind.
Following the well-worn path that winds past the flower beds.
And toward the quieter edges of the Haven Shop grounds.
The sounds of conversation gradually fade behind her.
Replaced by the rustle of leaves.
And the occasional song of a bird.
Hidden somewhere among the branches.
She pauses beside a patch of tall flowers.
Watching a butterfly drift lazily from one blossom to another.
Then continues into the woods.
Out here.
Layla's rounds take a different turn.
There are no patrons to guide.
And no shelves to inspect.
The woods have their own residents.
And Layla has come to know many of them.
A little movement catches her attention beneath a low shrub.
A young rabbit is sitting very still,
One of its back paws tangled in a thin strand of vine.
Layla approaches slowly and settles onto the moss a short distance away.
The rabbit watches her cautiously.
It snows,
Twitching.
Before moving closer.
Layla closes her eyes.
Sending waves of peaceful intention in the bunny's direction.
After a moment.
.
.
The rabbit begins to relax.
And Layla inches forward just enough to reach the vine with one paw.
With a careful little tug.
She loosens it from the rabbit's fur.
The rabbit hops free,
Then pauses at the edge of the ferns.
Ears lifting briefly in thanks,
Before disappearing into the greenery.
Layla watches the leaves tremble in its wake.
Then gives herself a quick lick on the paw.
As though nothing unusual has happened.
She continues deeper into the woods.
Her tail swaying gently behind her.
There are always little things happening here.
And Leila has learned that sometimes tending to the Hafen shop.
Means paying attention to the things no one else has noticed.
A bit farther along.
She comes upon Alfleck Cottage.
The Charming Little Home.
Sits atop an old,
Moss-covered tree stump.
With a tiny stone pathway winding up to its wooden door.
Warm light glows from the windows.
And flower boxes overflow with cheerful blooms.
The tiny elflets who live there are busy outside today.
Carrying baskets,
And sorting a collection of acorns.
Berries.
And other woodland treasures.
The elflets are trying to move.
One particularly full basket.
But it seems to be giving them some trouble.
Two of them are pulling at the handle,
While another pushes from behind.
Their little feet digging into the soft earth as they work together.
Layla sits down and watches for a moment.
Then,
Deciding a bit of assistance is needed.
She walks over.
And places one paw against the little basket.
The elf let's stop.
Layla gives the basket a gentle push,
And it moves.
The elflets look at one another.
Then.
Suddenly everyone is working together.
Layla pushes from one side.
While the elflets guide the basket along the path.
Eventually getting it safely to where it needs to go.
When the task is finished,
One of the elflets reaches up and gives Layla a grateful pat along her shoulder.
Layla accepts this honor graciously,
Though she does take a moment to sniff the top of the elflet's hat.
With everything in order,
She continues on to the woodland path.
The sounds of the Haven Shop have faded completely now.
And the forest has grown quiet around her.
Sunlight filters through the branches,
In shifting patches,
Warming the path beneath her paws.
Soon.
She reaches one of her favorite places on the Haven Shop grounds.
It is a small clearing.
Beneath several ancient pine trees.
Where the earth is covered in a thick,
Soft bed of fallen needles.
To anyone passing through,
It might look like an especially peaceful place to rest.
But there is something more here.
Something Layla can feel the moment she steps into the clearing.
The energy of the Earth gathers gently in this spot.
Creating a natural healing vortex.
The Haven Shop has always known.
That animals can sense these places instinctively.
They will find a quiet patch of earth.
And settle themselves there to rest.
For no apparent reason at all.
As though some ancient part of them knows exactly where their bodies and spirits can be restored.
Layla knows this place well.
She walks to a particularly fluffy pile of rust-colored bedding.
And lowers herself into a comfortable curl.
Her paws tuck neatly beneath her chest.
And her tail wraps around her body.
As she settles into the warmth of the afternoon.
For a good while,
She does nothing at all.
She closes her eyes and breathes slowly.
Allowing the gentle energy beneath her.
To move through her body.
The tension she has gathered during her rounds.
Seems to melt away.
Leaving her warm and peaceful.
A single golden leaf.
Drifts down from the branches overhead.
Turning slowly as it falls.
Before landing beside her.
Somewhere in the distance,
A woodpecker taps against an old tree.
Breeze moves through the highest branches.
Sending a whisper through the forest.
Layla takes it all in with the quiet contentment of a cat who has nowhere else she needs to be.
For this moment.
She is not tending to the shop or helping visitors.
She is resting.
After soaking up the gifts of the Healing Grove.
Layla stretches slowly.
Extending her front paws.
Until her claws curl gently into the earth.
She arches her back and gives herself a thorough stretch before stepping back onto the woodland path.
She feels refreshed now,
Her body warm and loose,
And there is a pleasant lightness to her movements.
Before long,
She hears the quiet sound of running water.
The little stream that winds through the grounds is just ahead.
Layla follows the sound.
Until she reaches the bank.
Where the water moves lazily over smooth stones,
Catching little pieces of sunlight as it passes.
She lowers her head.
And takes a long drink.
The cool water is refreshing after her walk through the woods,
And she remains there for a while,
Lapping slowly and contentedly.
When she has had enough,
She lifts her head and takes the time to watch a tiny ripple travel across the surface.
Then she notices the other side of the stream.
She has crossed here countless times,
And she knows exactly where the stepping stones are.
With a graceful hop,
She steps on to the first one,
Then the next.
She moves with careful confidence.
Never placing a paw where it doesn't belong.
One final leap carries her safely to the opposite bank.
Without so much as a drop of water.
Touching her fur.
There is one more place she would like to visit.
Before making her way home.
Layla follows the winding path through the trees.
Until the tree of retreat comes into view.
Its ancient branches stretch wide above the forest floor.
Strong enough to cradle the enchanted tree-house tucked among them.
The little windows catch the afternoon light.
And from somewhere high above.
Layla can hear the quiet sounds of its current resident.
Moving about inside.
She stops at the base of the great tree and looks up.
A face appears in one of the windows.
The resident spots Layla below,
Giving her a friendly greeting.
Layla sits neatly at the foot of the tree,
Her tail curling around her paws as she waits.
A moment later.
.
.
Something small comes sailing down from the treehouse.
It lands in the grass a few feet away.
A treat?
Her ears perk forward.
She picks it up.
And carries it to a sunny patch beneath the tree.
Where she settles down to enjoy her little gift.
High above,
The resident watches with a smile.
Layla takes her time.
There is no reason to hurry.
On a perfectly good treat.
Has appeared.
In such a lovely place.
When she has finished.
She gives her whiskers a lick.
And looks up toward the treehouse once more.
The resident waves again.
And Layla answers with an appreciative chortle.
Before turning toward the path.
That will take her back to the Haven shop.
Her rounds are nearly complete.
Layla makes her way back through the woods with expert ease.
The afternoon light has begun to fade.
And long golden patches stretch between the trees.
She pauses now and then to investigate an interesting scent,
Or watch a bird flutter from one branch to another.
There is a comfortable feeling.
In knowing that she is headed home.
As the shop comes into view.
She hears the gentle sounds of the garden.
And the muffled voices of visitors inside.
This time.
She walks around to the main entrance.
Where she notices someone stepping outside through the front door.
It is the Woman from the Healing Room.
Layla stops to watch her.
The change is unmistakable.
Earlier.
The woman had carried herself with a quiet tension,
Her thoughts moving quickly,
And her shoulders held a little too tightly.
Now.
She moves with an easy,
Unhurried grace.
Her face is peaceful.
And there is a lightness in her step.
That makes her seem almost as though she is floating.
As she passes.
The woman notices Layla.
And bends down to give her a gentle scratch behind the ears.
As before,
Layla leans into her hand.
The woman smiles,
Then continues down the street.
Looking completely at ease.
Layla watches her go.
Before slipping through the front door of the shop.
And now,
Perhaps.
.
.
It's time for her watch to end.
Layla steps into the common room.
And pauses just inside the doorway.
The warmth of the fire reaches her,
Carrying with it the comforting scent of burning wood.
And the familiar sounds of the Haven Shop.
Settling into evening.
Jadus is beside the fireplace,
Adding another log to the flames.
And she looks over as Layla enters.
There you are,
Jada says with a knowing smile.
As she runs a hand along Layla's back,
She notices the little pine needles caught in her fur.
I know where you've been.
Layla looks up at her,
Blinking innocently.
Jadis smiles and carefully plucks a few of the stubborn needles from her coat.
Layla accepts the attention for a moment,
Then turns toward the rest of the room.
The oversized chairs are occupied by patrons who've settled in with books from the library,
Their hands wrapped around steaming cups of tea.
And custom potions.
Quiet conversations drift through the room.
Mingling with the merry crackle of the fire.
Layla walks toward the hearth as a great yawn stretches across her face.
She lowers herself onto the rug and stretches out long and comfortably.
Letting her body sprawl against the warm fibers.
Here.
Surrounded by friendly voices.
And the gentle rhythm of the shaft.
She knows she is safe.
Still,
Even as she begins to relax,
Her ears remain attentive.
Turning toward the occasional rustle of a page.
A soft clink of a teacup.
Or the quiet murmur of someone speaking across the room.
The shop is peaceful.
And Layla is content to rest,
Among those she has spent so much of her day watching over.
Little by little,
Her eyes grow heavy.
The warmth of the fire seeps into her fur.
And the familiar sounds of the room begin to fade away.
Her breathing slows.
Into an easy,
Gentle rhythm.
As she settles deeper.
Into comfort.
And with that peaceful feeling of home resting in her heart.
The Haven Shop's Feline Familiar.
Slips gently.
Into the deepest,
Dreamiest sleep.
Good night.
