Emerging evidence is the honest ceiling for Eye-Gazing, and no completed trials show that it reliably improves social connection, empathy, anxiety, or any other outcome people commonly seek from it. What research does support is narrower and indirect: a direct gaze engages social-signal and attention networks in the brain (Kawashima et al., 1999), (Friesen & Kingstone, 1998), and prolonged gazing can shift perception, sometimes toward dissociation (Caputo et al., 2020), (Caputo, 2015). Still missing are large randomized trials, any measured effect on closeness or mood from the practice itself, and long-term follow-up. One randomized trial in 40 healthy men found that increasing attention to the eyes did not straightforwardly change social-emotional responses (Kelly et al., 2017).
Most of what research can say about Eye-Gazing comes from studies of how the brain reads a direct gaze, not from trials of the partnered practice itself. That work shows being looked at reliably engages brain regions that track social signals and pulls attention toward another person's eyes (Kawashima et al., 1999), (Friesen & Kingstone, 1998), which may explain why sustained contact feels so charged.
