Calm in the storm,
Meditation.
Sit comfortably in your seat.
Take a deep breath in through your nose and let it out with a long slow sigh.
Let your shoulders drop away from your ears.
Release your jaw.
Imagine the car as a protective,
Safe bubble surrounding you.
Set an intention.
I am focused,
Patient and safe.
I am in control of my driving.
Inhale for a count of four.
Hold for a count of four.
Exhale for a count of eight.
Repeat this four for eight breathing to calm your nervous system.
As you breathe out,
Imagine releasing any fear or anxiety about the road conditions.
Imagine the bad weather outside,
The rain,
Snow,
Fog or snow squall as a whirlwind around you.
See yourself in the very center of that,
The eye of the storm,
Where it is calm,
Quiet and still.
Even if the weather is intense,
You are safe in this quiet space,
Maintaining your focus.
With eyes open,
Observing the road.
Feel the weight of your body supported by the seat.
Notice the sensation of your hands holding the steering wheel firmly,
But not with tension.
Tune into the sounds,
The wiper blades,
The hum of the tires.
If you feel your mind racing,
Bring it back to the feeling of your feet on the pedals.
Silently repeat these to yourself.
I am a capable driver.
I slow down and take my time.
I am aware of my surroundings.
This weather is temporary.
I am safe.
Take one more deep breath,
Feeling rooted in the seat.
When you are ready,
Gently start your journey,
Knowing you can return to this calm,
Steady state at any time or at any stoplight.
Thank you.
