I want to focus on guilt as a signal of something that we value and changes that we need to make.
Parenting often feels like a minefield of should-haves,
What-ifs,
If-only,
But it really doesn't have to hold us back.
It can actually be something that can propel us forward in terms of learning and growing and being better than we were yesterday and the day before.
Guilt is an incredible opportunity to teach us where we need to grow and what really truly is important to us.
The only thing that we really truly do wrong is if we make a mistake and we don't get back up and learn from it.
If we stay down,
Then we've made a mistake.
So let guilt be a guide to teach you where you need to grow,
To teach you how to be a better version of yourself and do it better tomorrow and the next day and the next day.
So let's reframe guilt.
It's not a sentence.
It's not anything negative,
But it's a stepping stone to show us and guide us us where to go next and how to grow next.
And that way we can move closer and closer and closer to the parent that we want to be and the best version of ourselves that we can be.
Let's quickly go through how to reframe guilt.
There's three steps that I want you to remember.
Step number one,
Pause and reflect.
So when guilt creeps in,
Take a deep breath and think about why it's there.
What just happened?
What is this guilt telling me about what I value as a parent?
Step number two,
Shift your perspective.
Instead of focusing on what went wrong,
Focus on what you can learn from that experience.
So for example,
If you're feeling guilty about losing your temper,
Think about the steps that you can take next time to help you hold your cool or to help you pause before you react.
Step number three,
Take action.
Guilt really loses its power when we turn it into action towards positive change.
So apologize if necessary,
Repair what needs to be repaired,
And then think about specific actionable steps that you can take to do things differently next time.
Keep it simple.
The more we overcomplicate things,
The less successful we're going to be,
And we might end up tripping again.
So keep it as simple as possible,
But make sure the steps that you make are actionable,
Practical,
Things that are doable for you.
It's important to remember that no parent is perfect.
The guilt that you feel means there's things that you value,
Things that you want to do,
And ways that you want to grow.
And so guilt is an incredible opportunity to teach us where we need to grow and what really truly is important to us.
So next time you feel guilt,
Go through that three-step process and come up with actionable steps that can help you learn,
Grow,
And do things differently next time.
